Snarky Brides

If you could start all over again...

What would you be when you grow up? After 10 mos of unemployement I've decided to go back to school. But- for what? I already have a degree that isn't doing anything for me, and I want to do something that makes a difference (not DR or Nurse related).

So, if you could go back to school, what would it be for and why?

  • If I could go back to school I would go for engineering.  Something technical and hot right now.

But of course I pick a major that is very common.   (Early childhood education)
It's time. Adoption saving and process started in November 2012.

  • my list is long. I am currently an elementary school teacher (I teach grade 8 right now) If I could go back to the start I would consider the following careers, in no particular order:

    Interior Design
    Chef
    Event Planning
    Hotel Industry 'Something'
    Medicine or Nursing
    Journalism (print and photography)
    Social Worker
    Police Officer

I think that is it, except the list seems short to me...my problem was never figuring out what I wanted to do with my life, it was picking one thing. Of course when the time came to do it I was in a relationship and picked teaching because it was stable and quick to do. I don't regret it but there are other careers that might have been cool too...
  • English teacher
    High School Counselor

  • I'd be a vet or a secret agent.

  • I'd be a massage therapist.

And betrothed, I'm disgusted with most of the comments that you have posted. I don't think I've ever read such judgmental comments in my life. I'm so lucky that the girls I speak to on theknot are nothing like you...I would've never come on here for ADVICE if I would've encountered a big a bitch as you. I genuinely feel awful for your children or your future children, and I think it would be irresponsible of YOU not to invest in their future therapy sessions starting now. Because trust me when I tell you honey, they're gonna need it. ~jcaruncho2010

  • I almost went back to school for dental hygiene last year.

I've also considered teaching and IT.  I don't think I'd be ok with the paycut as a teacher, and I don't think the whole teacher culture would be for me.  I went to a teacher career fair last year and cringed a lot.

As for IT, I'd be stuck behind a computer all day like I am now, and I'm thinking that's the kind of thing I need to get away from.  But I do really like computer stuff and would love to know more, even if only for my own personal benefit.

So the short answer is I have no idea.  I plan to go back to school for something after we have kiddos if we do.

...a cake decorator/baker.  I always wanted to do that, long before Cake Boss and Ace of Cakes made it look cool.  One piping bag in a Home Ec class in high school and I was *hooked*.
  • If I could do it all over again I would have applied to the FBI after college like I wanted to and pursued that.

In my next life I hope to not be squeemish about blood so that I can be a midwife.

I'd be a trainer and nutritionist. I'd also be a chef. I think I could market all 3 together.

OR I'd be a forensic accountant for the FBI. I could still do that, but its not conducive to family life with all the travel and danger and stuff.

  • What is your current degree in? if you don't mind me asking.

Don't know what you are interested in, but Project Management is huge right now.  Earned Value Management and Critical Path Scheduling are things most companies are jumping in to.  I can tell you that it's a field a lot of people overlook, but there is a constant demand for people (and good pay too).  MS Project, Deltek Open Plan, and Primavera (I think they are owned by Oracle) are the 3 major tools companies are using, so getting some education in any of those would be beneficial.   Of course I'm a little biased :)  I see companies struggle a lot to fill positions for these jobs.

Bonus, one of the companies listed above is located in the DC area, and are always looking for new people.

What is all of that, exactly?  I hear about it all the time but truth be told I've never really understood what it is.  I always just assumed it was feel-good bullshit.

  • I would have probably majored in economics but I'm already really happy with my major in poli sci.  My college offered Poli Econ so maybe I should have done that.

Career wise I kind of wished I had at least applied to be a National Consultant for my sorority.  It's extremely difficult to get in but that would have been awesome.  At the time I decided not to do it though I thought it would have been the best choice not to.  Maybe it was *shrugs*.

OMG yes.  I always wanted to do that in college.  I already had a job lined up after school though.  Boo hiss.
  • I always wanted to be an author, and I'm still working on it. If I could have absolutely any job in the world and be great at it regardless of my current talents, I'd be either a chef, wildife rehab technician, or columnist for National Geographic.
  • I wanted to be an obstetrician, but I'm too big of a wuss for med school. So instead I became a forensic scientist.

I am not afraid of blood, as you can see, lol.
  • sketne, I haven't seen you before, but I love your siggy. It reminds me so much of my aunt's jokes (she's a microbiology prof).

  • Is it bad to say I would probably do the same thing over again?
But if that is a lame answer I would definitely love interior designing or being a high powered attorney a la Damages.
I think the biggest thing I would try to do over if move Mike and I somewhere warm before we started our careers. The fact that August is flying by is making me mad knowing winter is almost here UGH.
  • Art Major (which I was at one time), Event Planning, Interior Design, etc.  Right now I'm a in school to become a vet tech which I also really like.

[QUOTE]In Response to Re: If you could start all over again... : What house are you in?  I didn't do it because my parents were really unsupportive and I'd pretty much have to live with them for what the consultants make.  They claimed that it was irresponsible considering that I was getting married soon and I'd need a job.  Nice of them to let my brother who graduated 3 years late to putz around looking for a job while living with them.  Not that I'm bitter.

    Sigma Sigma Sigma.  You?

Your parents sound like mine.  They referred to my semester abroad as a "4 month European vacation."  Well call it what you want but I paid for every dime of it, just like my sorority dues and everything else in college.

Then my brother went to college and they deposited money in his account weekly and even more when he pledged, and then they poo pooed over him because bless his heart, he had to GET A JOB his SENIOR YEAR!  The horrors.

    Not bitter though.  ;)
  • Chi Omega.

My brother even got a job offer from our cousin (and his business is booming!) and he declined it and my parents don't blame him.  I know each child is different but wtf?

  • You don't have to answer this, but was the stuff on chiomegasecrets.com true?  Smile
  • Hm, I just looked up that site and it didn't look like anything at all.  I never heard of it before so I have no idea.  I know our nationals have people who are employed to look for secrets leaked or pins for sale and what not so maybe it was "fixed" awhile ago?

  • If I knew how much I'd be working now from having started my own businesses, I'd have probably taken student loans to get through school instead of working full time because I've never really had any point in my life where the day ended at 5 pm and I could party the rest of the night with nothing on my mind.  It was either mix work and class and studying and get 5 hours sleep, or after school when my first business was already going strong it was work 14 hours/day and it's been that way ever since.
