If you could start all over again...

Re: If you could start all over again...

  • I honestly don't know, which led to a bunch of dark feelings and some long discussions with my husband and my dad. I honestly don't know what I want to do with a career even now, and I feel like at 26 I need to figure that out.
I am thinking of going deeper into the computer world though, because I am really enjoying that.

I think I would have pursued an archaeology career more heavily though if I hadn't been with my ex and had him hold me down. I really do miss it, but also realize I could not have my current life at all if I had been more aggressive with that path.

Oh, I do really like investigative stuff too. Being a background checker or internet police would be fun. Just not stuff where I would get shot or kidnapped because I know too much. I'm kind of a chicken.
  • Yeah, it did get taken down.  It was about the initiation rituals.  It was pretty ridic but when you're in college you believe that kind of stuff.  It said that you had to lose your virginity before initiation if you hadn't already and that you laid down in a coffin and were "reborn" into Chi O.  It was big time drama when I was in college.
  • Oh hahaha no, none of that is true.  That kind of stuff spreads like wildfire in colleges though, in part by members themselves (sadly).

    My Bio Updated 4/6/10
  • If I had a choice to go back and re-do what I had done, I would have started learning foreign languages much earlier.  I started Spanish at age 13, and hated it, so I didn't pay attention until I was 17 - I speak fluently now, but never will speak natively.

If I had to change careers now, I'd do culinary school or become a novelist.  If you want an education that will produce a career, anything engineering based or technical usually is in demand.  My brother just graduated from college in mechanical engineering, and he turned down 3 job offers and took one that he's absolutely in love with. That's pretty awesome in this job market!

[QUOTE]In Response to Re: If you could start all over again... : What is all of that, exactly?  I hear about it all the time but truth be told I've never really understood what it is.  I always just assumed it was feel-good bullshit.

It is a lot of feel-good bullshit, but it's also a lot of logic.  And as funny as it sounds to say, you'd be amazed how many people are lacking in the logic department.  We use the critical path scheduling and earned value at my work.  This is just an example of my work, but it's an easy explanation.  I work for military aircraft engines, when a new engine is being developed it takes several years from concept to the first time we get one up in the air.  I design schedules for every piece of the engine and tie them all together so that if something slips past a due date I can instantly see how it impacts (cost and date) the entire engine within a few minutes.  Then I can look into making up the time/budget so that we can still meet our required deadlines.

Almost any company that deals with anything to do regarding the military is contractually required to use an approved scheduling/project management software.  The best part is the jobs pay very well, so most people don't leave their jobs, but when companies need new people they have a hard time finding them.  I'm currently looking for 2 people at the moment and can't find anyone.

That's pretty neat.  I loved cost accounting and productions in school so that sounds right up my alley.
  • dmiller, my friend is a project manager for Dell, and she gets PAID. She just completed her PMP. Im not sure exactly what it stands for, but she calls it her Pimp Cert.

  • Sorry for the post & run guys! The day got super busy!

All of these suggestions are pretty rad. Sometimes I wish I was more technical (math/science) than I am. I suck at math - so much so, I failed the high school level math class in college. Otherwise, I would've followed through with my dream to be an Astronomer.
  • Probably Culinary school. If you had told me 2 years ago that I'd have a budding home baking thing going on, I'd have laughed in your face, but I absolutely love it. I wanna learn to cook.

  • I mostly wish I had found my current career much earlier. If I was going to choose something else and go back to school, I would want a degree that was very career specific - I felt so lost when I graduated and couldn't really get into anything I liked for years. It would be nice to have a set career path when you graduate.

Project manager actually is the next step in my career if I stay with my current company, though it doesn't really suit me as well, so I'll have to figure something out. I really like user experience and UI stuff, but can't specialize in it here.

AND... I actually did apply for the ELC at Alpha Phi when I graduated - didn't get it, but got through a couple of rounds of interviews and I'm glad I at least tried - it would have been such a fantastic experience.
  • I'm so lame. I went to school the first time around for hospitality management. Four year degree, top of my class, got a bad ass job out of school. And then the bad ass job turned out to be a lot of BS and I couldn't take it anymore. Basically the company moved me to New Orleans and then eliminated my position, essentially stranding me in a city I barely knew with none of my family or friends within 1,000 miles. They kept me on at a lower position with lower pay and I couldn't make ends meet and I felt seriously unfufilled. Which sucks, because my dream would be to own a bed and breakfast.

Anyway, I did the go back to school thing. For accounting, because I'm good at it. I still don't know what I'll do though... :(

    Planning Bio

  • I still don't know what I want to do with my life. :( If I had a do-over I might have gone into management instead of graphic design. Event planning really intrigues me right now too. Pharmacy is also something I would have considered if I knew then what I know now. Pretty much I would become ANYTHING that wasn't the first on the chopping block when money gets tight at companies.

I just had a convo last night with FI about potentially opening our business one day. I would LOVE for this to come true because I ultimately want to be my own boss. FI is an architect so he would be doing his thing and I would be running the business. If this starts to become a reality I'll probably want to take some management classes.
