Re: Things that make you feel old

  • I loved how when you read Choose Your Own Adventure, if you hit something you didn't like, you just started over or you would peak ahead to see where you'd end up. Way to prepare us for real life, jerks Wink

I loved the Super BSC books that came out where all the girls randomly went on a cruise or to summer camp together. And how many of you tried to create your own BSC with your friends?

I remember getting too old for the Fear Street books when part of me was like, "All of these things happen on ONE street? How long is this street?"

[QUOTE]In Response to Re: Things that make you feel old : I remember watching "Stand By Me" and "La Bamba" on Betamax. In fact, my first crush was on Gordie (Wil Wheaton) in "Stand By Me". Now that he's all grown up and a certified nerd, I still find him very attractive lol. Our love is everlasting, it has survived nearly 25 years of infatuation.

Did we just become best friends??!

I have loved Wil Wheaton for so long. Stand By Me is my favorite movie ever.
  • Oh man, Sweet Valley.  Those books were horrendous if you look back on them.  I thought both of the twins were pretty awful.  Jess is a sociopathic skank and Liz is so holier-than-thou.  I liked Lila.  She was a biiitch but at least she had a soul, unlike Jess.

This. It's like you're in my head!

I felt really old when a girl I babysat graduated from college. And this was like 5 years ago now!

[QUOTE]In Response to Re: Things that make you feel old : YES!  My mom read my sister and I every single one of the original books (before the ghostwriter ones came out, although I think we read some of those, too).  My sister and I used to pretend we were Violet and Jessie living out in the woods.  Loved those books.

Looking back on it, I read a shiiit-ton of books when I was growing up. I remember reading all of the Anne of Green Gables books, then moved on to the American Girls books, but those aren't as much fun without owning at least one of the American Girls dolls. My favorite was Molly, the one with glasses and bangs with pigtail braids. I liked her school bag and lunchbox, and the fact that her story was set during WWII (IIRC).

  • The fact that so many of you were still in school when 9/11 happened.

I had to explain to my almost 13 (yeah that too) year old nephew that when I was growing up, you actually had to get up to change the channel, on a little box, that sat on top of the t.v.

We would have been reading buddies as kids.  I read all of these!

I think my favorite stories were Felicity's.  I loved her clothes and the Revolutionary War era.  They were really well-written; I definitely developed my love of history from reading those books.

I think we just did! I can recite every line from that movie. I watch it when I'm sick and want to feel better. I watch it on Sundays when I'm bored (it's the perfect Sunday afternoon movie). They did spot-on casting for the roles, too. I love Corey Feldman as Teddy.

I also loved their campfire discussions. "If I could eat one food for the rest of my life? That's easy - Pez. Cherry flavored Pez". And "Alright, Mickey's a mouse, Donald's a duck, and Pluto's a dog. What's Goofy?"/"He can't be a dog; he wears a hat and drives a car".

  • Talking about my dad's Intellivision that my brother and I played all the time. Burger Time and Tron being two of the best games ever.

The first computer I remember was a DOS with the huge floppy disks and games like Qbert and Digger (I rocked that games world).

That's why it's one of my dad's favorite movies.  He says it reminds him of when he was a kid and he used to just vanish all day, from right after breakfast until dinnertime, and nobody freaked out or came looking for him.  I didn't have that when I was a kid because we lived about two streets away from a major road, and my dad was terrified we'd wander into traffic or get abducted or something.

  • My ten year reunion is this year, but we aren't going.  Kinda bummed about it actually.

I've been out of college SIX DAMN YEARS.

My baby sister also just took her senior pictures and when she posted them on FB I was like... wtf.  YOU ARE A BABY.  Now you're all grown up and absolutely gorgeous.  Feck.

It doesn't make me feel old - just kind of, behind the times - when I go back and harvest for my dad.  I haven't been yet this year but last year I did, and he was showing me all the stuff in the cab of the combine.  Wtf, I thought I had it easy when I was like 12 and 13 running those things (and it was easy back then)?  Nowadays - they literally run themselves.  All you have to do is turn a corner, and then push a button.  The machine does the rest.

Being with Ben makes me feel old sometimes.  We met when we were 12.  My SIL was talking about her oldest daughter getting more interested in boys but how she's only 12 so she's not TOO concerned yet.  I was like... uh... SIL?  Your brother and I started "going out" at that age.  Ya never know.

When I was a little kid, we lived right outside of NYC, in a not so great neighborhood with a YMCA down the block. My mom was convinced it was full of pedophiles and kidnappers, so I never got to play outside. Then, when we moved to my hometown, it was all, Be free!

did you guys get afraid of a white van that supposedly drove around abducting kids? Someone heard that a white van was driving around and once we would see one driving through the neighborhood, everyone would run screaming.

  • When "new" movies come out that are really just remakes of older movies and people not much younger than me have no idea it's a remake.
  • I am jealous Les, I wanted one of them so bad!  And yes, recording stuff of the radio onto cassette tapes was the bomb!
  • When I was a little kid I had my own vinyl records - I had Sesame Street ones, a few with stories on them.  And they were scary ass stories, too.  I think Pandora's Box, there was one about a girl who couldn't speak for 7 years or something because of a curse and was almost burned at the stake.  And I would put all the records on myself and listen to them.  When songs came on I'd just run around the room in circles, lol.  I couldn't have been older than 3 or 4 when I started doing this.

I still get that Sesame Street song in my head - "There Ain't No Road Too Long."  Man, Big Bird was the shiiit.  And considering we had only like four channels, I really loved using my dad's record player.  They still have that thing, too.

Or their own televisions in their rooms :P

How old are you, if you don't mind me asking. I always thought you were a year or two younger thna me.
  • I still have some cassette tapes buried somewhere in my piles of ish.  I remember I used to record songs on the radio and have them on tape.  I was a winner.

I had Kirsten for an American Girl Doll.  Her head was messed up.  Like, her hair was in shambles when I got her.  It was one gigantoid knot.  We could have sent her back and got a new head but I think the whole thought of doing that freaked me out when I was younger so I sat there and tried so desperately to brush that darned hair.  I loved Molly and Felicity too.  I LOVED the little babies that the AGD company came out with.  I got the little "hispanic" baby.  I loved that doll to pieces.
  • I always did that, Duds!  LOL!

And yeah jcb - when I was really little, none of my dad's and grandpa's machinery had cabs.  They were all just blowing in the dust and wind all the time.  And my grandpa would roll all his cigarettes out in the open on those things.  One handed.  Because he was a bad ass.

  • I had a carebear record player. My first record that wasn't a kid record was Run DMC. I will still rock shell toe adidas and dance around my house to "It's Tricky." At the ripe old age of 7, I already knew the importance of rap music and break dancing.
