Tell me about 2 year olds.

I have a 2 year old on my caseload. I don't know anything about 2 year olds. I will mostly be checking to make sure that the child is up to speed developmentally and working on play skills. Does anyone have any recommendations for a good resources I can use? Online is best but if there are good books I can look for them at the library.

Is the child special needs (developmentally/educationally) at all?  I know that our schools use what's called the Carolina Curriculum for benchmarks.

    Here is a short synopsis:
The Carolina Curriculum for Infants & Toddlers with Special Needs (CCITSN), Third Edition (birth to 36 months). CCITSN includes 24 logical teaching sequences covering five developmental domains: cognition, communication, social adaptation, fine motor, and gross motor. Curricular sequences each consist of an introduction that explains why that sequence is important; suggested adaptations for children with visual, motor, and hearing impairments; and a list of behaviors associated with that sequence. For each behavior, users get a criterion that pinpoints the objective, a list of suggested materials for eliciting that behavior, procedures that help, and functional activities for encouraging that behavior within the child’s daily routine. Appendices cover play and children with motor impairments, using object boards for teaching children with motor impairments, and more.

All you need to know is that 2 year olds are basically tiny drunk assholes. Just treat them as such and you'll be fine.

Ok, you actually ARE helpful!  Not sure on the special needs, I think that's kind of what we're trying to determine.  I think there are concerns of an ASD, and concerns with being aggressive during play.

This seems pretty accurate (and from a legit site)
    http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/002002.htm

I would then look up individual methods for teaching/therapy that are recommended based on the child's current proficiency.

edit: too slow and not as helpful as others, as usual.  But I try  ;)

Well I know at least some of our autistic students are on the Carolina Curriculum at our school, and many of the intellectually delayed students as well. It pretty much is just a list of benchmarks with months/years by it. You establish where the child is based on the benchmark criteria and then work on subsequent criteria to help them reach the next benchmark.

    I agree w/ Jackie, BTW.

Does the child have a regular pediatrician that can give you an idea of what to expect?

Just keep in mind that children develop at such different rates when they're that young; Taryn is already speaking in full sentences, while DH didn't start speaking until he was almost 3.

</strong>Oh, definitely.  The person that did the diagnostic assessment thinks that the child is likely pretty ok developmentally, but that foster mom (while she does a great job meeting basic needs) just isn't very nuturing, and a lot of the things she's concerned about won't present while we're there.  Our main concern is the aggression during play.

As far as the pedi, I think the child is just starting to get regular medical care for the first time since shortly after birth so probably not much info there.

Thank you guys for the info so far!

What to expect has a version for toddlers that breaks it down month by month for the parent or provider with developmental milestones, cognitive, motor....the whole range.  My daughter was born at 28 weeks, so her developmental goals were a little different, so I'm afraid I am not much help in that department.

Poor kid :(  If foster mom isn't very nutruring, I wonder if the agression is a way of acting out for attention.

That's definitely one of the things we talked about.  I haven't  been to the home yet, so I can only go by what my supervisor said, but that sounds like a pretty realistic possibility.

If you have the resources to do it, I suggest bringing a toy or two that the kid may like with you.  Some kids are very shy around strangers, so you might not be able to assess his behavior.  Giving the kid a toy that is new to them might get him/her excited to play (A NEW TOY!  MINE, MINE, MINE!!!) and loosen up around you (or forget you all together).

I don't think it really matters.  At 2 years old, they should be starting "pretend play" so anything is a possibility.  Taryn likes:  dolls, dinosaurs, stuffed animals, animals, puzzles, blocks, stickers, crayons, etc.

Maybe you could make a small play kit?  Stickers, crayons and a coloring book, a few animal figurines, maybe a doll.  That should cover anything that she might be interested in.

My niece is 2.  I know she started saying some words and she could def point at something when you said it.  Like "where is mommy?"  or where is the doggy?"  Stuff like that.  She is 2.5 now and can say sentences and express some feelings.

She could also hold a crayon, although awkwardly.  She started saying no and stop it too.  And she found her girly parts too.

Things she didnt really understand were why she cant sit on the baby like she sits on aunties stomach and bounces, lol.

Seriously, her sister is 1 and my sister is always having to remind her to not push her and sit on her.  I dont know why she wants to do that.  That may have to do  more with sibling jealousy than being 2.  Same with biting.  She tried that and my sister put a stop to that right away.
