Dog abandoned because of floodwaters

Yay, more depressing stuff about what's happening where I grew up.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FY2XJWfP9VY&feature=share

This dog's owners were forced to leave their home after the lake flooding choked them out, and they left their dog behind.  This neighbor of theirs took him in.

He is so, so sad :( I've only watched it once and I can't stop crying.

  •   I could never leave my puppy :(  She's like my baby.
  • That is so so so sad. I could NEVER leave my animals.

  • I think I know the family the dog belonged to - they basically lost everything to the flood, and can't find any housing in the area (it's all being taken up by workers building up the dikes) so they are moving out of state to Colorado where they have some more family there.  Maybe they just couldn't afford to bring the dog, or something.  I asked my mom about it and she told me they'd originally planned on putting him down, but in the end they couldn't do it.

That's so sad. But, why did they leave him behind? That's kind of shiity. Why not at least bring him to a shelter so he's not left to die under the porch unless someone rescues him?

ETA--you posted before I finished so I didn't see your update. I still don't get why they couldn't bring him anywhere, leaving him to die is just cruel. But I can't imagine living in those circumstances either, so I'm sure it wasn't their first option.

<div>So they just abandoned him?! wtf?  I get that what's going on there is absolutely horrendous.  But... they couldn't have called a neighbor and at least said they had to leave him? It'd be one thing (maybe) if they knew they were going back in a few days and left him food an water. But they just leave him there, knowing they were never coming back?!</div>
  • I woulld have tried to find him a place to live....shelter, neighbor, something.. that's super sad though.

Wow. Just wow. I am beyond pissed at the family that left the dog behind. Enraged you could say. How hard would it have been for them to take the poor dog with them and then take him to a shelter, or a vet, or a family, or something. But for chrissake, don't leave him out there to die. It makes me sick. How terrible for that dog.
  • I wish I knew more.  If it's the people I'm thinking of - they are certainly not the type of family to leave a dog to just die.  They could have left with plans to go back, but after leaving the water came up enough to where it was impossible for them to get back in.  Then they could have called this neighbor who went to rescue the dog.  I mean, people don't just randomly go around to people's farms when all the roads to them are flooded - so this rescue lady had to have been tipped off.  That's what I think (and hope) happened.  The woman who rescued the dog can only get to her home now by boat.

And leaving him under a porch to die is better? I am absolutely horrified by this.

  • This reminds me of all the families who left pets alone when Katrina hit.  They KNEW they were going back in a few days, so they just left the animals with more than enough food and water to last the week... then they were never able to get home.  It absolutely breaks my heart.

I hope you're right, AATB- hopefully they called the neighbor and asked her to check on the dog or something.

<div>I am really hoping this is what happened. You're right, people wouldn't just randomly go to someone else's farm, even when it isn't flooded.</div>

I just don't get it. Maybe it's because I have a tender heart for animals, but I would never ever ever leave our dog or cat behind. Just the thought of it makes me tear up. Those stupid furballs are just as much a part of our family as H or I are. I just don't get people who could walk away from their pets.
  • Ya, I doubt that was their intention, but I also would have thought about the possible scenarios, and tried to plan ahead for all possible outcomes.

  • I'm glad the doggie has a new "forever home".  Poor baby.

  • I couldn't leave my dog, either Mara.  No friggen way.  I don't care if I couldn't bring clean underwear or shoes along, I wouldn't be leaving my dog.

  • We've left Whisky overnight if we're out of town for the day (well, not now since he needs all the meds), but in that situation, no way. If we had to leave for a hurricane, even if just for a night, I wouldn't even consider leaving him because you never know what could happen. Last hurricane we had, our roads were blocked off for 4 days and no one could get in or out.
  • Wow, that breaks my heart. I have such a soft spot for animals. I'm glad the dog has a new home. Ughh, I feel so bad for animals that are treated poorly, it makes me sick. :(

This whole entire thing is tragic....for the people, the community and for the animals such as this one.  This makes me very sad and pissed at the same time.

I don't care what was happening in my life or to my house, either Sarabelle comes or I will stay behind.  She is my child and I love her more than words can say and I could never ever leave here....anywhere.

  • OMGWATERWORKS. :(

    That's just heartbreaking. HEARTBREAKING.

  • I can't watch the video :(

I've never been able to understand how people leave their pets behind. I'd be swimming my way out with Ozzie strapped to my back if I had to.

  • AATB - I don't really know much about the flood situation - other than there is one - is there nothing they can do to get rid of some of this water?

To make a very long and fucked up story somewhat short - our state and federal government should be able to do something to let water out, however - what they've done instead over the past 18 years is spend nearly a billion dollars on raising roads and dikes to protect the city, but the water just gets pushed out the other side and floods all the rural people.

People downstream of the water (which includes the entire eastern portion of North Dakota and the Canadian province of Manitoba) don't want the water because it's high in sulfates.

If the water comes up a little less than four more feet, it will flow out naturally and pretty much screw everyone downstream.

What amazes me is how our delegation struts around talking about all the federal money they've secured for the region and how they've helped.

Um, really?  Because look thefuck around.  All your help hasn't done jackfuckingshit.
