Snarky Brides

Tell me about your favorite appetizers

My shower is coming up in June, and my sister and mom (who are throwing it) have asked me to come up with a potential menu for it. We're going to be making pretty much all the food ourselves the day before and the morning of, and expecting 15-20 people. We're probably going to cater sandwiches, but we'd like to serve them with an assortment of finger foods.

So far I've come up with:
Guacamole appetizer squares with bacon
Hummus-stuffed cherry tomatoes
Deviled eggs
Endives stuffed with crab dip
Assorted fresh fruit, veggies, cheese & crackers
Charlie's aunt's awesome yogurt dip
Gazpacho

I think we need more of the kind of pop-in-your-mouth, stuffed-with-something-awesome type appetizers, but I'm not sure what because I usually don't make that kind of thing.

Also, do most people share my abiding love of pigs in blankets? I have a feeling my mom and sister will tease me if I suggest them, but I do love them so.

Re: Tell me about your favorite appetizers

  • My mom has this amazing recipe for spinach-artichoke dip. We have it with crackers at pretty much every holiday. I can get it if you'd like.

This is more dessert like but is great for parties like showers. In the dessert freezer section of the grocery store they have these little fillo dough cups. Fill with instant pudding (chocolate or lemon is best). Right before serving, put a dot of whipped cream on top. They taste delicious and people think you worked really hard making these little pastries.

Also, if you check out the Pilsbury crescent roll website, they have tons of appetizer recipe ideas with pictures.
  • I love pigs in a blanket.

I am co-hosting a baby shower for my friend tomorrow and am making pickle roll-ups and meatballs. For the meatballs I use grape jelly and chili sauce and do them in the crock pot. For the pickle roll-ups you can use roast beef or ham, spread cream cheese on it, wrap it around a pickle and cut it into bite size sections. H and I prefer good roast beef from the deli but my friend wants ham, so ham it is.

  • I love pigs in blankets.  :)

I really like little bites - we had fried mac and cheese at our wedding and it was delicious.  Basically you make mac and cheese, roll some into little balls, add breadcrumbs, and fry them.

I'm always a huge fan of bruschetta.

  • Before I got to the end of your list of food, I was thinking you needed some pigs in a blanket.  i too love them so.

Other than that, it sounds like a good menu.  Here is what was served at my showers:

    #1
    *chicken salad finger-sandwiches
    *potato straws
    *chocolate strawberries
    *cheese tray
    *cake
    *punch

    #2
    *eggrolls
    *tuna salad sandwiches
    *cocktail shrimp
    *chips & queso
    *petit fours
    *mini cheesecakes

Bacon wrapped scallops.  I would kill my own mother for a good set of bacon wrapped scallops.  They've got some good ones at Sam's Club in the frozen section - you just pop them on a pan and throw them in the oven for like, 10 minutes and they're good to go.

If I wanted to hear the pitter-patter of little feet, I'd put shoes on the cat. image

  • I have 2:

Swiss Cheese Crab & Artichoke Dip - Swiss cheese, sour cream, cream cheese, crab, artichokes, garlic, dill.  Mix it all together; bake in the oven till bubbly.  Slice a french baguette thinly, bake til slightly crisp.  Dip!

    1 lb cream cheese
    1 cup sour cream
1/2 lb Dungenous Crab (I usually use fancy canned crab, cheaper, just as tasty)
1/2 lb artichoke hearts - don't use marinated
    1 lb shredded swiss
    1 tbsp chopped garlic
    2 tbsp fresh dill
    1 loaf french bread

Creamy Mushroom Kisses - mushroom duxelle wrapped in phyllo and baked til golden.  A little labor intenstive but well worth it.  You can find the recipe in 365 Snacks, Hors D'Oevuvres & Appetizers by Gandara & Fallon

  • Thanks, Kay. :)

Also, we had these really cool hummus appetizers - they were in tiny salt cones.  It was really yummy.

  • Spinach and artichoke dip
Mini grilled cheeses with tomato soup
    Veggie pizza
    Brie and crackers/baguette

ditto on petit fours and mini cheesecakes!

  • I love pigs in blankets! I like making two types of stuffed potatoes that I got from Rachel Ray's magazine. For both, you bake the potato halves and then scoop out the centers. One mix is chopped broccoli, plain yogurt, bacon bits, potato insides, and paprika. The other filling is potato, chopped onion, bacon bits and bleu cheese and sour cream. Thry're delicious and usually a big hit. Target has these Archer Farm brand of puffed pastries stuffed with spinach and articoke dip. They're awesome and require no prep. I also like Purdue's popcorn chicken stuffed with cheese (Italian ones). I serve them fondue style with a bowl of seasoned marinara sauce.
  • Mm, now you guys are making me hungry. :)

Anna, I was hoping I could lure you with a food thread! Do I remember you posting something a while back that involved pepperoni and maybe something like crescent rolls that looked really delicious? I remember thinking it looked really good at the time, but I'm not sure if I still have it saved anywhere.

CS, had never heard of lumpia, but just looked it up and now I want it.

    cream cheese
    powdered sugar
    butter
chocolate chips (i use hersheys milk choc chips)

you mix all ingredients then form into a ball shape and wrap in cellophane and put in the fridge for at least 2 hours. then you serve with chocolate graham cracker sticks!

if you google choc chip cream cheese ball you can find the recipe..some people add walnuts also

My aunt makes these kabob things that are basically just a piece of fruit wrapped in bacon with sweet and sour sauce. They are DELICIOUS!

Here's the basic recipe. They use pineapple, but my aunt also does grapes.

Except we use one larger can of chicken (12.5 oz, I think?)

H doesn't like too much blue cheese flavor, so we use mozzarella. We use a whole bag though, which I think is 2 cups.

I also use my kitchen aid to mix everything but the chicken together, instead of doing it in the baking dish, then stir in the chicken last like the recipe says.
