My poor dog.....UPDATE

Is in surgery right now.  :(

She is getting a growth removed from her mouth that may or may not be cancer.  If its cancer, they will have to remove part of her jaw and put a plate in.  We thought a few rounds of antibiotics would take care of it 2 weeks ago, but it didnt so here we are.

Im worried about her.  She is an old lady and going under anesthesia is dangerous.

Anxiously awaiting the call that she is done and everything is ok.

UPDATE:
Got the call.  She did great and is waking up now.  They will send the lump out to be biopsied(sp?).  They cut out most of it and burned off the rest.  I cant wait to go pick her up as soon as she fully wakes up!

Re: My poor dog.....UPDATE

  • Aw, poor girl. What kind of dog? Hopefully your vet did tests to make sure she could handle anesthesia. When I bring my cat in for dental work they test him since he's old too (14).

I've found that the older dogs get, the more likely they are to develop growths. But a lot of the time they're nothing more than that, so I'm sure your dog will be fine.
  • I'm sorry.  I know what you're going through.  My dog had breast cancer, and she was old.  She survived her surgeries for the cancer - she was just very weak for a couple days afterwards.  She lived really well for a good 2-3 years after her diagnosis.  I hope everything goes well for your dog.
  • Sending good thoughts. We just had to do a similar thing with our dog who is also older. And she was fine.
Let us know how it goes.

  • Oh poor Gia! I'll say a prayer to St. Francis for you.
Dogs are pretty resilient. Don't worry too much; I'm sure the vet will take excellent care of her.

  • Thanks girls.

Sheshat:  I know you are not a fan, but she is a pit-bull.

Im sure it will be fine, I am just being a worry wort.  Ill let you all know how it turns out.  This waiting game sucks.

That's right, I remember you saying that now. I swear I have the worst memory. And it's not that I'm not a fan, I'm just more cautious around them. I think pitbulls are gorgeous dogs, I'm just less likely to cuddle up to one than I am, say, my dad's boxer (who is quite possibly the dumbest dog alive but is so sweet it doesn't matter).

How long is the surgery supposed to last? Are they calling you right after, or when she wakes up?
  • September--how are you doing, if you don't mind me asking? I was thinking about you and hoping you were okay about your kitty.
  • Yeah she is a sweetheart and a big cuddler.  I swear she thinks she is a lap dog, lol.

They said they are going to call between 1-3.  They will let me know if I can take her home today or not.

She got spayed as an adult (7) and did fine.  She will be 9 next week.  They have a life span of about 12-14 if they are in good health.  I am just glad they are taking care of it.  She has been uncomfortable for some time now with it.  Her pain tolerance is very high, but she has been yelping when you touch her face, so I know she has been in alot of pain.

  • Big dogs always think they are lap dogs. My dad's boxer always tries to lay on you, and he is a huge dog that probably weighs close to what I do.

And yeah, it's good to be taking care of it now rather than later. I remember a dog at the vet that had a tumor on the very back of her tongue and the owner refused to do the surgery because of the cost since it wasn't cancerous. But the poor thing nearly gagged every time she ate. I don't get people who ignore when their pets are in need of medical attention. I freak if my cat gets a little scratch.
  • Poor dog! I hope everything ends up ok.
  • Seshat, thanks for asking. I'm doing as well as I can be, less than 24 hours after her passing. I've been sporadically bawling my eyes out, but I know in my heart that it will get better and that we did the right thing.

That makes me so sick.  I feel once you get a pet, you assume all costs involved.  This is gonna cost between 550-780 today, but I didnt even think twice.

Here it is a crime if you do not get your pet medical attention if they need it.  The ASPCA will take your animal, fine you, and you face jail time.  If you cannot afford it, all you have to do is sign your pet over to them and they will pay for it and find them a good home afterwards without prosecution.  There is really no excuse.

  • Understandable, September. I still sporadically cry over my cat that passed away 4 years ago, especially when I go home and see her gravemarker. But you're right, you did the right thing and now she's in peace, pain free. But I'm still sorry for your loss.
  • Thanks, girls. I just said to someone on E that it seems like nobody on earth can possibly imagine what I'm going through, but yet, someone always does.
  • Awww, so sorry about your kitty, September.  And Blue, my best healing vibes to your loved furry one.
  • Aw September :( I'm sorry to hear about your kitty. My ratties passed away over a year ago and I still cry every time I think/talk about them.

Lots of good thoughts heading your way Blue. Katie goes in for a dental cleaning next week and I am terrified because she's 11 and a breed that normally goes until 13. The vet ran tests and said she's healthy enough, but I wouldn't be able to handle it if something happened to her on my dad's birthday, and right after we get back from vacation.

Let us know how it turned out. My ratties went through a lot of surgeries for tumors, and it's definitely worth it, even if they are not cancerous or malignant.
  • Aw, I'm sorry, Blue.  I hope she has a quick recovery and her tests are benign.  Hang in there - she's a lucky dog to have such a caring owner.
  • Aw, sending good thoughts your way.  Having a pet at the vet is nerve wracking!  My cats are totally my kids.
  • Sending doggie hugs to your little one.
  • Blue- sending good thoughts to you and your doggie. I'm glad she has a caring owner.

September- I'm sorry you had to face the decision that you had to make, but knowing you saved your kitty more pain will help you heal, in time. I faced the same decision with my Layla and it sucked for a while, but the thing that got me through was knowing I had made the right decision, at the right time.

And betrothed, I'm disgusted with most of the comments that you have posted. I don't think I've ever read such judgmental comments in my life. I'm so lucky that the girls I speak to on theknot are nothing like you...I would've never come on here for ADVICE if I would've encountered a big a bitch as you. I genuinely feel awful for your children or your future children, and I think it would be irresponsible of YOU not to invest in their future therapy sessions starting now. Because trust me when I tell you honey, they're gonna need it. ~jcaruncho2010
