In Response to Re: Sorry birthers... : Yep, already got an email from my admin. Ugh. Trump getting elected wouldn't be soooo bad. People over-estimate the amount of power the US President has. With the system of checks and balances, I still feel that Congress holds most of the power. And I don't care for Trump personally, but politically I think he would be quite capable as long as he didn't alienate all of our foreign allies.
Posted by marriedfilingjointly
This would be my concern. I watched a Good Morning America interview with him and he came across as too aggressive for my liking. Then again he wants to come across that way, so maybe if he was ever in office he would be more pragmatic. I am not sure.

I think I might have seen a clip of it on The Nightly News with Brian Williams? They were reporting on the interview, so I didn't see the full clip. He was making comments about how could Barak get into the colleges he did and all of that. It was just kind of an ugly interview.

I don't think people who don't like Obama are racist, but I'm really suspicious of these "birthers" who think he's not a US citizen and he's a terrorist. That might be flame worthy, but I've just heard too many comments from "birthers" to make me not think that they're just concerned for our country and there isn't a different motive for their skepticism.

I honestly believe he's just doing all of this as a publicity stunt. I don't think he's going to make a serious run for president. He'd need to work on his interview skills if he did that. He was about the bite the head off of the guy interviewing him the other night.

I haven't seen that interview with Williams but none of that stuff is surprising to me from the mouth of Donald Trump.

I'm suspicious of the birthers too. Why is it that we have to demand to see the birth certificate of Obama and haven't wondered about any other president? Well, he's got a funny name, MIDDLE name is Hussein and I mean NO real American or non-terrorist would have that name. Plus he's black! AND MUSLIM.

My own grandfather was spewing that shiit during the campaign season and he was a birther back then. He made a crack at "why won't he provide his birth certificate, WHERE did he even grow up?" I'm like, dude? He grew up in motherfucking Kansas. He wouldn't be allowed to run for Pres if he wasn't a citizen. Why must we perpetuate this bizarre conspiracy. I know he's a Democrat and half the country hates Democrats, but if it's not enough for people to disagree with his political leaning and his policies, then they have to fly out into left field with some unfounded claim that he wasn't even born in the US?

Ugh.

I have no problem with people not liking Obama because of his policies, or his political leanings, or even because they think he's too slick or too arrogant or whatever. At least you dislike him because of a rational reason. Birthers make me want to punch them in the face. And I agree, no President in history has EVER had to release his birth certificate to the general public. Ever. So when people are all "Why didn't he do this before???" it's because he shouldn't have had to.

Also, I think if he was a black guy named Jim Johnson we wouldn't be having this conversation right now. I really think the whole birther thing has to do with his name.

I don't think that anyone who doesn't like Obama is racist.

I do believe that there are plenty of racist idiots, though.

I have no problem listening to people talk about why they disagree with the President's policies and why they don't agree with the health care law, etc. But the minute someone mentions "Muslim" or "birth certificate" or something like that, I just want sock them. Pow, right in the kisser!

This whole thing has been so ridiculous, and Trump is just over the top. His actions this week have convinced me that he's not actually running for president because I can't imagine any candidate who wants to be taken seriously would be so outlandish.

His latest stunt is to claim there's something fishy about Obama's school records. He was the EIC of the Harvard Law Review and graduated magna cum laude!!! What the heck man?! Even George W. Bush and John Kerry admitted they were mediocre students. Why the focus on Obama's educational background? You'd think that if any of that stuff was made up the real EIC of the HLR would come forward or some enterprising reporter would realize that he didn't actually graduate magna cum laude. Trump is an asss.

This birther stuff really pissed me off because Obama had already released the certificate of live birth that you get from Hawaii when you request it and that is accepted as proof of citizenship for a driver's license, a US passport, I9 forms, etc. If it's good enough for the State Dept to issue a passport, why is it not good enough for the birthers?! The state of HI doesn't even accept the "long form" birth certificate as an official document anymore, only the computer generated one you pick up from the Dept of HHS.

The irony of all of this is that John McCain definitely was NOT born on US soil (he was born in the Panama Canal zone) so he's the one who is questionable. Though PPs are right in that "natural born citizen" has never been challenged or interpreted by a court, so those words could mean that someone must be literally born on US soil or born to at least one US citizen parent or born to two US citizen parents (no matter where you're born). I think Obama said during the campaign that he would not raise it as an issue.

Being a reporter definitely brought me closer to center - mostly because I got to meet all the candidates and get to know them really well, better than most people do. I was pretty liberal in college but right now at best, I'd call myself "liberalish." I vote for people in both parties.

The last election was a NIGHTMARE for me. I had a really hard time deciding on who to vote for in several races.

ETA - Cran, I remember hearing that about McCain. He was born on a military base though right - so that would mean he'd still be considered a citizen? Either way. Obama was born on more American soil than McCain was - and I find that irony to be quite hilarious.

I like John McCain. I kinda wish he could have been Pres instead of George Bush.

Quotes from Donald Trump:

1) "I probably identify more as Democrat."
--Interview with CNN's Wolf Blitzer, March 2004

2) "I've been around for a long time. And it just seems that the economy does better under the Democrats than the Republicans."
--Interview with CNN's Wolf Blitzer, March 2004

3) "Nancy — you're the best. Congrats. Donald."
--Handwritten note to Speaker Nancy Pelosi, January 2007

4) "Bush is probably the worst president in the history of the United States."
--Interview with CNN's Wolf Blitzer, March 2007

5) "I'm totally pro-choice."
--Interview with Fox News Sunday, October 1999

6) "I want to see the abortion issue removed from politics. I believe it is a personal decision that should be left to the women and their doctors."
--Remarks to reporters, December 1999

7) "I'm very liberal when it comes to health care. I believe in universal health care."
--Interview with CNN's Larry King, October 1999.

8) "The Canadian plan also helps Canadians live longer and healthier than Americans... We need, as a nation, to reexamine the single-payer plan."
--Writing in his book, The America We Deserve, January 2000

9) "By imposing a one-time 14.25 percent net-worth tax on the richest individuals and trusts, we can put America on sound financial footing for the next century."
--Writing in his book, The America We Deserve, January 2000

10) "I think he [Obama] has a chance to go down as a great president."
--Interview with NY1, November 2008

Now, I understand that people can have some "change of heart" on certain issues. Sometimes feelings about things change with experience. But these quotes don't jive AT ALL with the shiit he's spewing now. Trump is as hypocritical, narcissistic and opportunistic as they get.

If he were actually able to run and win the title of President, I would be disgusted. What a joke.
