New York City... Ideas needed por favor

Our first anniversary is this Sunday (woot!) and we were kicking around the idea of doing NYC for a long weekend.

I've been given the task of researching awesome things to do. Any recommendations? Hotel recs would be especially helpful. I haven't been to NY in about 15 years so I'm pretty excited.

I've never stayed in ahotel in NYC b/c I live only about 30 mins away but I have some ideas.

The Metroplitan Museum or Art and/or the Museum of Natural History are AWESOME!!

Since it's your anniversary, the Museum of Sex!! I've been wanting to go, but haven't yet.  http://www.museumofsex.com/

I'd also recommend hitting up a nice Italian restaurant in little Italy.
ETA: FI took me to a place called "Da Nico" there and we loved it.

    Happy Aniversary!

No can do :(   Tim doesn't want to take the car into the city so we actually have to stay in the city because I think we're going to try to walk to as many things as possible, and I don't want to walk from Hoboken  :P

    Congrats on your anniversary also.

I have never been to NYC either (planning a long weekend soon) but my co-worker just got back. They stayed in a boutique hotel close to Strawberry Fields, they are big music people, so that have pictures with the memorial to John Lennon as well as gorund zero.

  • Oh, one more thing. If you LOVE cheesecake, PLEASE get yourselves over to Juniors and pick up one for yourself to take home if anything. There's one in Times Square. It is the best cheesecake I've ever had.

Museum of Natural History is a must! I had no clue there was a sex museum, but I don't think it would take much persuading to get Tim to go.

Italian food is also a must.  I think he want to see a show. It's a good thing I'm dead at work because I have a lot of things to check out.

  • What kind of food do you like?  There's an Italian restaurant near Times Square called Insieme.  I looove that restaurant.  It's a more modern type of Italian cuisine and is delicious.

There are about 3 W's in NYC I think, including one in Times Square.
  • If you want to see the most touristy stuff, the Hop on Hop off bus is a really good option. I have taken guests on it, and you hit all the big 'sights'. Although it is pricey.

For non-touristy, just walk around! Little italy or SOHO are great for that.

    That hotel looks awesome!

Oh yeah, and I got a STD yesterday for our friend's wedding in Vermont in October! I have a feeling I'm going to be doing a lot of traveling this year.

  • I like to stay at the Salisbury Hotel on 57th.  It's right across the street from Carnegie Hall and Planet Hollywood, and around the corner from the Park and Mickey Mantle's Place,
  • If you like peanut butter, you should go to Peanut Butter & Co.

Or you could hit up Magnolia and mack on some cupcakes (Samberg and Parnell aside, I heard they're pretty spectacular)

  • Do you like Mexican? Guacamole? Because you have to go to Rosa Mexicano when you are there.... they make the guacamole at your table, it is awesome!

And even though it is pretty touristy we always have to go to the Carnegie Deli--love this place.

  • Thanks ladies :)

  • Oh an one more thing, I think, because I can't seem to get all my ideas at one time.

    There's a bar called McSorleys.

    http://www.mcsorleysnewyork.com/home.html

If you look at their site, the place has a ton of history beind it and it's the oldest operating saloon in NYC. It's pretty small and they didn't even allow women to enter it until they were court ordered to in 1970. It's just one of those places that has a very interesting backstory and if youre going to be in the area, it would be cool to stop by, have a drink and take some pictures.

We have one here in DC.  Way overpriced and not at all impressive.  Seriously.  Chipotle has better guac for double the portions at half the price.

I love their guac and margaritas but agree that the rest of the food is overpriced.
  • I wouldn't go to Rosa Mexicano.  It really isn't great.

Do you guys like Spanish food at all?  This place www.tiapol.com is the BEST tapas I've ever had.  DH and I used to go there all the time before we moved.  And, for NYC, the prices are really reasonable.
  • staying in hoboken would be cheaper and the PATH train takes you as far as 34th in midtown.

i will be going back to NYC for the 1st time in years next spring. I am going to go to Serendipitys for a frozen hot chocolate. that is my only must so far. i am taking my SO who has never been so most of the trip will be catered to what he wants to see. ie statue of liberty, empire state bulding

as for walking everywhere,,,,NYC has a lot to cover which will make you very tired and sore after a few days. there by decreasing the energy each following day. i havent lived there since 06 so maybe some of you more nyc local girls can help her out...isnt there a subway pass that is reasonably priced that allows you to get on and off as much as you want for a specific number of days?

  • i just looked it up and there is a 7 day fun pass for the subways that is $27. its good for unlimited subway and bus rides until midnight the 7th day after you bought it.  walking is great excercise and i recommend doing lots of it. however if you stay in midtown to be in a neutral location, you will still be increasingly sore and tired if you try to walk downtown and uptown. plus you will be wasting valuable time that can be used to explore!
  • I lived in Philadelphia for a very long time, so I'm used to city walking and that shouldn't be a problem. We'll probably end up taking a cab anywhere that's too far to walk.

Julez - their menu looks awesome. I'll show it to Tim when I get home.

I think the main things we want to do are the Museum of Natural History, see a play/musical and then I think we're going to just wing it from there.

Tim is a huge foodie and I know he's going to want to sample just about everything.

  • Another good hotel is Flatotel in midtown, I've stayed there for conferences for work, it's nice, very modern. I would also suggest Carmine's if you like Italian food right by the theatre district whch does not take reservacations, but it's worth the wait. And if you're up for from Brazilian food go to little Brazil on 46th  to Viva Brazil and have some awesome meats, rice, beans and drink some delicious caipirinhas: http://www.viabrasilrestaurant.com/index.html

    Happy Anniversary!

These are a couple of places that I stayed before moving to NYC:

http://www.countryinnthecity.com/- this is right by Central Park (awesome neighboorhood location) and you'll feel like you live here. So cute.

http://www.solitasohohotel.com/ -stay here once too. i think it's pretty affordable for the neighborhood. bonus: it's right by the knot and you can come and take a little tour.

museums: i love the met. it's beautiful. guggenheim is good and has a nice restaurant (the wright) inside. i've also been to the museum of sex. it's worth a stroll for the non-prude.

food/drink: lupa is great for italian, but you'll need to make a ressie now. for pizza (a must, right?), i like john's and keste (naples-style) in the west village. i like to take people to see a comedy show at comedy cellar before or after in that hood. my favorite restaurant in the city is prob balthazar in soho.also, if you're going to be at grand central then you can have a drink at campbell apt (no jeans) and then grab oysters at Grand Central Oyster bar. Mermaid Inn is also the bomb for shellfish if that's your thing. a fun thing to do is to make a reservation for drinks at PDT (after 4 each day for same day ressie)that's a speakeasy-type of place. they have great cocktails and you can get hot dogs from next door.  if you want mexican, i'd go for la esquina (for the downstairs atmos) or cascabel on the UES (sooo good).

shows/tourist stuff; if you're into shows, i just saw memphis and loved it. we did the tkts booth and only waited about 20 minutes. my favorite bar in that area is Jimmy's Corner. it's a dive, but a nice change from the chains in times square. i love going to central park-it's my favorite place in the city for sure. also, you can now ice skate at rock center and other places in the city.

    hope that helps!

  • Everyone had awesome recommendations, so the only thing I might consider is the NY City Pass (if you're into museums, landmarks, etc).  we bought one for San Fran at about $60 pp, but it gave us admission to about seven or eight different sites, plus unlimited transportation.  I think the NYC one gives passes for the Empire State Building, etc.  It might give you more tickets than you have time to use, but it's worth considering.
