I don't think we're too young for kids. BUT we've only been together 3 years. I've always wanted to be married for a few years before having kids (my parents were married for almost 3 years before I was born). I'm also in grad school an FI and I would like to rebuild our savings, get more settled and perhaps look at buying a house before we have a kid. So we're thinking 2-3 years from now. I'd like 2 kids, max, and about 4 years apart.

I want kids, and DH doesn't yet.... he's not stable enough for kids anyways (job-wise)... although when I turn 32, we'll be adopting.

Kids- none. And that's ok for now, but if our situation was better we'd start trying sooner I think. As it is we won't be able to start a family for probably 4+ years. I don't want to be an old parent so that kind of depresses me a bit. And it's not like in 4 years we'll own an awesome home and be completely settled into our careers or anything either but we'll hopefully be better off than we are now.

We're undecided on the subject of spawn.  Sometimes we want them.  Sometimes we don't.  Definitely not now.  Maybe in a few years, after we've had time to enjoy each other.

    I don't feel like a woman 363 days from 30.  I still feel too young.  =\

  • I named my future kids, and I'm not planning on having any.  So if you guys are weird, then I belong in a padded room.

Actually, a padded room sounds lovely.

J&K, what do you do specifically?

ETA: I ask because I am triyng to figure out what to do with my psych degree. I like kids, and behavior mod. Now I am looking at options involving those two thing.

  • I'm a counselor at a residential treatment facility for kids with emotional, behavioral, or other psychiatric disorders.

  • That sounds pretty awesome. Not the whole abuse thing, but the rest of it. :)
I've been hit, kicked, and had toys thrown at my face in the past. Good times.

  • I'd show you a picture of my arm currently, but I don't want to make anyone lose their dinners that they may have just consumed.

Some days my job is really rewarding.  Some days I come home and cry in the shower.  I like to say "I love what I do, I hate my job."

  • Previously, I did applied behavior analysis work for the state autism waiver. Now, I'm doing in-school support with one client that has autism.
I've found that I really like behavior modification, and things that I can graph. I also loove working with kids, though I've only worked with 6 and under thus far. I don't know if I want to keep working with autism specifically, or do something more like what you do now.

Kids-not yet but I would be knocked up now if FI had any say in the matter.  But I do want to be able to enjoy myself at my wedding and on my honeymoon but soon after since both our clocks are ticking like crazy.  Hope to have 2, we are both only children and I always wanted a sibling when I was growing up.

If you do want to do residential treatment, a lot of places (especially the state agencies) will pay for part of your schooling if you're working there at one of their Bachelor's degree positions.  At least around here.

Cool, can I ask what he wants to do when he's done?  I'm hoping to start on my MSW next year.

No kids, but we are working on it.

J&K, i admire you so much. I have two friends with young children with severe emotional problems (they were both diagnosed as bipolar very young, with PTSD thrown in there). One is in a residential setting, and the other has been in the past. I know how hard it is for their moms, so I can only imagine what it must be like with a bunch at the same time.

Hey, that's cool!  I bet that will be a really tough job.  I'm sure the veterans will be happy to be able to talk to someone that can relate.
