So I almost murdered my dog on Friday.

I was driving our usual 3hr drive down to San Diego and im almost to Kyles house and my puppy pees in my car! Of course I couldn't pull over immediately since I was on the freeway. I pull over (I had no idea where I was) and when I tried to do some damage control I realized that it had soaked through everything and deep into my seats! And this is in the middle of the night so nothing was open for me to go get some kind of cleaner.

So Saturday morning I ran around getting cleaner and did my best to clean it but it still smelt like pee. I spent 100 bucks taking my poor little jetta to get detailed and have the seats cleaned and everything. My car still smells like piss and im not sure if its ever going to smell good again. I understand he is a puppy but did he not understand that we were 20 minutes from the house? Ugh

vent ended.

    This.

It's your fault.  And was preventable.  He's not a human, you can't say "hold it 20 more minutes" and him know what the heck you're talking about.  It's your responsibility as a pet owner to provide pee breaks.

  • My cat poops every time when we drive the 1.5 hours to my mom's. Knowing this, if I ever had a dog I would be stopping at the rest station halfway through the trip. Let this be a lesson, dogs need pee breaks too!
  • When mine were puppies, they couldn't go more than 2 hours without peeing except at night.  I've heard that with some breeds, their bladders aren't fully developed until they are two which is why they can't hold it.

I was driving some girls back from a softball game we played - it was my turn to drive, and I was driving my girlfriend's car.  Everyone was trashed, I mean, hey, it's softball.  The chick sitting behind me leaned forward and puked in my lap.  I pulled over and she finished puking first on the floor in the back seat, and then out the door.

The smell stayed in my girlfriend's car for quite a while.  Oh, and I threw away those softball shorts.

I'm so tired of people comparing pet ownership to parenthood. It's not the same thing.

But I do agree that it might have been avoidable (OP never said whether or not he had a pee break at all) and it's just one of the hazzards of a road trip with your dog. D

  • 1.  Go have your car detailed.
    2.  Take this as a lesson.  Your dog cannot spend hours in the car without taking a break to relieve himself.

I get being frustrated, but this is not your dog's fault.  He's an animal.

And betrothed, I'm disgusted with most of the comments that you have posted. I don't think I've ever read such judgmental comments in my life. I'm so lucky that the girls I speak to on theknot are nothing like you...I would've never come on here for ADVICE if I would've encountered a big a bitch as you. I genuinely feel awful for your children or your future children, and I think it would be irresponsible of YOU not to invest in their future therapy sessions starting now. • You know what?  Accidents happen.
Take it as a lesson learned. Before putting the dog in the car, give him ample time to do his business.  Stop every hour to let him relieve himself.  Give yourself enough extra time for little rest stops.
Don't get mad at the dog. I am sure he wasn't too happy to have to pee in the car either.
  • Pee breaks are a great idea but he wont go in places he is not familiar with. He is really weird. The first few times we drove up there I would stop at a rest stop and try to get him to go and 30 minutes later he still wouldn't pee. It took him 2 months of living at my house to go in the front yard, he would only go in the back yard its the weirdest thing. And he wont go to the bathroom when he is on a leash either.

No, it is not the same thing. If you think animals are crazy making sometimes, just wait until a KID gets ahold of your life. I may not be a parent, but I watched my sister in law go from a sane and rational human being to a blubbering mess of sleepless bad nerves for the first year of my nephew's life. He screamed his entire first year. Funny thing is, his grown up self is so mellow you would never imagine he was THAT baby. Sme thing as having an animal? Absolutely not! Kids are much more difficult .
  • I don't think its weird that your dog doesn't want to pee in places he's not familiar with.  I mean, a lot of people are that way.

My co-worker's dog won't pee if it's been raining.  She's a beagle.  She hates the rain for some reason and when she gets on the wet grass, she refuses to pee.  Then she's miserable til she has an accident in the house.

  • I had my car first and he has the whole back seat to himself. I have 2 water resistant pads back there (one is the doggie hammock thing so he wont fall on the floor) and I have a blanket and a towel and toys back there and he loves it. He usually just sleeps the whole way. I think the car relaxes him because I usually have to wake him  up to get out of the car once we get there lol.

And I didn't kill him or yell at him or anything like that. I understand accidents happen I am just sad that my car smells like pee.

  • What did you use to clean the seat?  Was it just a spray and a cloth?  That wouldn't get down as deep as you need to go.  You need to shampoo the seats, which a detailer will do if you bring it in.

  • My mom watched Whisky when we were on our HM. On the drive home, my brother took Whisky out of the carrier and held him on his lap. Whisky then peed all over him, and the seat. HIlarious to everyone, my mom included, but she said it took 2 weeks for the pee smell to go away.

They cleaned the seats, kept the windows open (the sun baked the truck and made the smell worse), and put in baking soda. It must have worked because the smell is gone.

We drove from New Orleans to Kansas City in a moving van with myself, my mom, FI and our cat. We took the cat out at least a dozen times to try and let him pee. We left him by himself in the truck with the litter box hoping he'd go when there was privacy. Nothing.

When we were about 20 minutes from our house, Jake peed all over my foot. I was annoyed but mostly felt bad that he'd tried to hold it for so long.

    ...great story, self.

ETA: Jake is the cat, not the FI. Just FYI.

  • Try vinegar to clean it with. I once had vomit in my car and the vinegar did the trick. Make sure to get the plain vinegar and not apple cider :)
  • The vet gave my cat back to me after he got neutered with a big old cat turd already in the carrier. I didn't notice it until we got in my truck and I'm all, WHAT IS THAT SMELL? He was all yowling because he got his nads cut off, and I was gagging because it was the worst stank ever, and I  had to drive with my head out the window. It was a traumatic experience for us both.

I figured if I didn't, someone is going to think enough like me to wonder why my future husband peed on my foot.

  • Ditto Betrothed.  Definitely get it detailed or your dog is going to smell the pee and think it's ok to pee there again.

then put a tarp over the seats and use rubber backed bathmats so they don't slip....

50/50 vinegar and water neutralize dog urine but your car might smell like vinegar for a bit...

doing transports you NEED to give the dogs potty breaks...be lucky he didn't puke.  they get excited sometimes and adrenaline makes them need to pee...

thankfully i have leather seats - but i have had pee, puke, poop, explosive diarrhea

  • Completely saturate the seat with Nature's Miracle. Enought that the entire seat, pad included is damp. Give it about two weeks to eat the smell away. Put baking soda in the car to absorb the smell as well.
    image
  • Buy 2-3 boxes of  activated charcoal at the fish store (the kind used to in tank filters.  Spread a layer on top of the pee stain and cover with newspaper.  Leave this on for at least 2-3 days, and then vaccum up all the charcoal.  The charcoal will absorb the odor.

Life with dogs and kids is messy, but it doens't have to smell.

  • Oh baking soda! I didn't even think of that. And I did take it to get detailed. They shampooed the seats and the floor and all of my mats. It smelt better for about a hour and then the smell started to creep back.

  • I did soak my seat with natures miracle. That stuff is the best odor/stain remover I have ever used but this time it failed me lol
