Scrabble gets dumbed down

This really ruffles my feathers.

I love playing Scrabble.  BF and I play all the time, and we get pretty competitive.

Now they are adding slang words to their dictionary.
If he plays 'innit' on a triple score and wins the game, I'm pretty sure I'll revert to a three year old playing Candyland and flip the board over.

  • I think that completely defeats the point of Scrabble. Let's face it, people who talk like that aren't the ones playing.

  • Well, he's not going to win with a word like "innit", even if he plays it on a triple word score. Even with the tripling, he'd get at most 18 points (assuming one of the letters also lands on the adjacent double letter score).

If he wastes a triple word score like that, you should flip the board no matter what the word is.

Plus, that would be a phrase, not a word. I'd argue to the ends of the earth on that one.<div>

Sarah, I hope you have a Pogo account, because I'm challenging you to a Scrabble game some day soon.

ETA: Our games are usually really close at the end, so 18 points could win or lose the game. (Even though it's highly unlikely that he would have that exact situation.)

Haha maybe I should get an account. Although having one more distraction is really the last thing I need. :)

On the triple word score: It's just the principle of the thing. I can't imagine playing a five-point word there. I tend to hoard high-point letters and refuse to use them unless I can at least double their value.

Sarah, I'm vicious.  If I think he can play on a triple, I'll waste it on 'cat' or 'too' just to block him.

  • That's so sad! I am not going to tell FI about that little addition, our games are usually close too ;)
One time I got so mad because I had the word GALAXY right on my easel (what are those little things called anyway?) and couldn't use it anywhere throughout the whole game :(

  • One way to deal with this is just to boycott the new Scrabble dictionary. Our house rules are generally that we pick a dictionary, and that's the dictionary to look up words for challenges. It's not like most of us are playing in the world series of Scrabble, so we can keep our games pure if we want. The only ones who have to worry are the professionals.

Also, Facebook? MySpace? Totally proper nouns, which have never been allowed.

H and I are serious at Scrabble like no other. We also have weirdo letter and triple score 'rules' to help us score better, including, nothing lower than 25 points if you are using an "s"!

<div>Yup, this is me too. Sometimes we get so vicious with the defense the game sucks towards the end because there is no where to go! We cut off whole corners with V's, C's, and Q's all the time.</div>

  • This bothers me, but it won't really affect me. We long ago lost our Scrabble dictionary. I insist on using this dictionary from the 70s that I found at my parents house. No slang words. I refuse to use a new dictionary because it has words like jiggy in it. I also do not allow proper nouns. FI gets annoyed with me because he always trys to play words and I won't allow it because they violate the rules.

Sarah, I have before made FI take words off the board for wasting a triple word space. He once played a 4 letter word, where one was a blank (no points) and the other 3 were 1 point letters. I basically had a hissy fit.
