Book recs please!

I need a couple recs that I can pick up tomorrow since we leave early morning Tuesday for our honeymoon.

Likes:
-witty writing
-surprises
-well-developed characters
-fantasy/sci-fi/history/comedy/drama/classics

Dislikes:
-super heavy stuff. This includes topics like the Holocast. I enjoy reads like that normally, just not on this trip.
-poorly written novels. Yes, this includes the 50 Shades series.
-omnipresent 3rd person. Not all the time, but sometimes it can get awkward and hard to read.
-"chick books". If the theme is "BFFs forever", I probably won't like it.

Some of my favorite authors include Wally Lamb, Ann Patchett and Dave Eggers to give you an idea.  Any help is appreciated. I know I am kind of picky :(

I can't recommend "A Discovery of Witches" enough. It is beautifully written, the level of detail is gorgeous, it is just a wonderful read. Plus it is the first of a planned trilogy, the second book comes out next month.

Philippa Gregorys Tudor series (the other boleyn girl, the boleyn inheritance, the virgins lover) or cousins war series (white queen, red queen, lady of the rivers). Both are fantastic (to some degree).

I agree.  I also read her book "The Constant Princess" about Catherine of Aragon and really liked it, and I keep meaning to start the war series.

  • Turn of Mind by Alice LaPlante
Wonderfully written story about a former doctor who is believed to have killed her neighbor/best friend.  It is told from the point of view of the former doctor, who also has dementia, and whose mind is deteriorating throughout the book.  It is a little heavy, but not holocaust heavy.  If not on this trip, it would still be a good addition to a list of books to give a chance!

    Enjoy your honeymoon!

PS.  LOVE Ann Patchett, especially Bel Canto.

I am reading The Godfather by Mario Puzo at the beheast of my beau. I haven't finished it yet but it's a great read so far and one of the longest running best sellers (42 or 52 weeks or something). Actually, it's clearing up the movie for me, some things that I didn't understand when I watched it the first time.
I also just finished the Rogue Agent trilogy by K.E. Mills. It's written by a British author so it's fun to see the variances in vocabulary. I think my favorite part is that it's based in a world that has some technological advances but also magical.

  • I agree that Phillipa Gregory is good but she can be easy to burn out on. The themes get repetitive. My favorite is the Queen's Fool.

  • The last book I read that I really thoroughly enjoyed was The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein. I feel like, even if you aren't a dog lover, you would enjoy this book. It is very witty and insightful, while still being heartfelt and serious in places.

    Have a great honeymoon!

  • If you don't mind a little edge to your humor, I suggest Chuck Palahniuk.

For surprises/sci-fi, I love Neil Gaiman, especially American Gods and Good Omens.

  • I just finished Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter.  It was fantastic.

  • The War of the Roses Philippa Gregory series is absolutely fantastic.

I also LOVE Nelson Demille. Night Fall is one of the fastest-paced, chilling (but not too heavy) books I've ever read. John Corey (the detective and main character) is irreverent, sarcastic, and will go to any lengths to get answers. It is about TWA Flight 800 (the one that crashed over Long Island in 1996) and also deals with 9/11, but the tone is not overwhelmingly sad. I both laughed out loud and cried several times while reading this. Wild Fire is another John Corey book of Demille's that I love.

    Have a great honeymoon!

  • I agree that On the Island was a well-written, easy to read book.

Another book I just love is called The Passage (click) by Justin Cronin. However, it is a big book so I guess if you don't have an e-reader it might be too bulky to take. This book is the first in a trilogy, and I think they may have even have a movie in the works for it. Super good.
  • I'm reading "Let's Pretend this Never Happened," right now.  It's a fun read, but is written almost in essay/blog form.  Each chapter is a different story.

  • The Kate Daniels Series by Ilona Andrews

The Dresden FIles series by Jim Butcher

For those that like Philpa Gregory, I suggest Alison Weir's non-fiction- her fiction is lackluster, but her non-fiction is very good!
  • Fantasy/caper - "Lies of Locke Lamora" by Lynch

  • I 2nd the Discovery of Witches rec.

I'm currently reading Think Twice by Lisa Scottoline and it's a good thriller type - not terribly freaky and fun characters.

Michael Connelly (The Lincoln Lawyer) and James Patterson are both really good for crime dramas.

  • I'll second Neil Gaiman for scifi/fantasy.  American Gods and Neverwhere are excellent.  His writing comes off as a little awkward at first (I think he uses first names instead of pronouns too often).

I'm a huge fan of Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child.  I've even worked on a couple of their manuscripts!  They're books are more "thriller" types, but they're usually well written.  Douglas Preston's work by himself is usually very good too.

I've started reading the Sigma Force series by James Rollins after picking up the 5th one (The Last Oracle) randomly.  I'd also put these in the thriller category.  The Last Oracle is one of the best books I've read in a long, long time.  It weaves together some very interesting history that doesn't seem like it should/could be related into a fascinating tale.

I recently read The Dig by Michael Siemsen and I'm hoping for a sequel.  It was a little wierd, but overall a very compelling read.  It's about discovering evidence of a human-like species that inhabited earth millions of years before homosapiens ever existed.

Good luck finding some new books and have a wonderful honeymoon!

DITTO! The Sigma Force series is excellent, although the last most recent was a little weaker than the rest, and I LOVE the Agent Pendergast Series by Preston/Child. :)

Thanks for the other suggestions there, sounds like we have similar taste!
