Okay I just typed out and erased a response like three times trying to say this. You put it so much more eloquently. I don't think that because some old bad guy is dead that the threat is gone. It wasn't coming solely from him as a person.  I'm nervous about what may happen in the future.

A lot of comments I keep seeing is "good, now we can start withdrawing our troops" (from both Canadians and Americans). Is that really a good idea? I mean, yay Osama is dead, but what he created isn't.

I gotta admit, I deleted my wtf dude comment about my friend. When he said that, I didnt agree because they werent "celebrating" like this, but I certainly share the sentiment now. climbing trees, jumping around and acting like jackalopes is pretty distasteful.

I agree. When I see other countries doing similar things I always think it's a little barbaric - I hate seeing it from my own country.

I just think there's a line between celebrating and spring break. This is seeming more like spring break. Singing patriotic music and gathering together is great and moving but I just feel like it's become a little too much.

 It reminds me of times in history where bodies have been hung up in town squares to be destroyed by citizens. What would happen if Osama's body was hung up somewhere - would we become equally barbaric? I just don't really like it - it makes me a little sick.

Isnt that kind of stuff exactly what we do every July 4th though?  Parties, beach balls, patriotic songs, etc?  July 4th celebrates killing people too.  I guess Im just confused.  People are excited and rightfully so.  Same thing happened when the Berlin Wall came down.  Well, except they had The Hoff.  I can agree that if the Hoff shows up and starts singing, that may be a bit too much.

Haha! No I know - it's patriotism. It's just not sitting well with me for some reason. I just don't know that it's a time to celebrate. Like Monsta said - if the war is over, that's when you party in the street. I appreciate the patriotism of our country, this party atmosphere for today's events just doesn't feel right to me. I get what you're saying though.

Adding onto Pixie's comments re: the off-putting nature of celebrating any killing, I think that in this instance, the OTT patriotism is only going to add fuel to the fire.

 

The Hoff could actually be somewhat redeeming in this instance.

I actually see the celebration as a Thank You to the President and the troops that have fought for our country. I'm sure if they are watching it, they will feel proud that they are serving their country ETA: And appreciated.
Also- terrorists don't need to see this display of celebration to want to attack us. They want to anyway. They think that everything we do is disgusting.
