As it's been said so eloquently in the past "Haters gonna hate."
Terrorists aren't going to see the celebration and say "wow-now, I really want to get those Americans." They are thinking it anyway. The celebration does not impact them in the least. I'm sure.

[QUOTE]In Response to Re: Obama's Press Conference. : That's why I believe it should be difficult for people to say that the US would be coming across as barbaric. People may be celebrating in the streets, but they aren't carrying the dead bodies of the terrorists as they carried our bodies through the streets.

Agreed, which is why I'm able to remain a proud American. We would never do that. Sadly though with selective media coverage and propaganda we will still be seen in a certain way.

I guess my earlier point wasn't that our country is barbaric but it comes down to human nature. Fortunately we have a government that would not sink to the level of releasing a body to the public, but if they did I'm certain that people would rip it to shreds and that to me is disheartening. I'm not saying that Bin Laden deserves any sort of respect at all but I am glad that his body will be treated in a way that allows us not to sink to their level.

<div>Very luckily. I was an adult who saw them and was horrified by them. I get that they were our enemy - believe me, I get that - but to publicly display their corpses, almost as trophies, was in bad taste to say the very least.</div>

I'm kinda there with you, except for me it's that I'm very deep in my own feelings, and I'm not yet ready to analyze/judge other people's feelings. I think if I were in DC or NY right now, I'd probably go outside just to be with other people, because this is a time to do that - instead I'm alone in Wisconsin with the cats. I don't really feel like celebrating. I'm feeling pretty solemn. But I'm not going to worry too much about how the rest of the world feels about us right now.

While I agree with you that it shouldn't be a victory for either political "side", I do feel a sense of warmth for Obama tonight, especially after the week he's had where he had to release his birth certificate. So many people have questioned whether he has a legitimate right to be President (and I'm not talking about you here) and whether he loves this country, and I hope that at least a few of them have softer feelings tonight.

Though we have a country where many people would tear him to shreds his body was in the streets, not that that is a good thing, but it would be an emotional response to losses we all suffered.
The real problem is that many of the people that practice "jihad" would send their children into public areas strapped with bombs to kill people. We will never sink to their level.

I guess I would just argue that people need to gain the insight that terrorists already hate America, our values, our lifestyle and will always want to kill us.  Taking out Bin Laden in my eyes will not fuel the fire.  To me it will teach them that if you are going to mess with us for no reason, we are going to take you out.  Period.

I also find it hard to believe that if a group pulled off a mass murder of Australian citizens, and 10 years later you found the mastermind and took him out, that people would not be celebrating.

I don't particularly care either :D I'd stay and talk but I need to get to bed. I guess I can sum up what I think by stating, it's not going to make much of a difference to the terrorists and would-be terrorists how or if Americans are celebrating Osama's death. They would want to attack us no matter what, because that's how terrorists operate. They hate America and everything we stand for.

The military, CIA, and the president knew that capturing or killing Bin Laden would, in and of itself, cause there to be possibly increased terrorist activity and I'm sure they've taken the appropriate steps to prevent any attacks.

Agreed.  I dont for a second think it will end terrorism.  But we certainly dealt their operation a big blow with this.  It will take awhile for them to reorganize and be able to attempt something major.

I guess we can just agree to disagree.  I still dont see an issue with Americans gathering in their capital to celebrate however they see fit.  And I dont think it needs to be defended to anyone.

I also would like to note that those people are not celebrating the death of innocent civilians... but of a true monster, whose life surrounded bringing hurt and pain to many many lives.
