  • That's a great idea Fever! What a great way to get kids to eat their veggies!

  • Indiana is so cheap. It's really nice. In my part of the state, you can get a beautiful house, on a decent size lot for under $150k. I imagine people would faint at the tiny amount we paid for a 3bd/2br nice house. But... not as many jobs and the jobs that are here don't pay a whole heck of a lot. I can't complain though. H and I both have jobs that pay decently, so it's good.
  • NP, it is healthier. From what I understand it, the schools have removed all the fryers (so no fried foods) and I BELIEVE there are no more coke machines. That being said, the program has a long way to go.

The USDA considers a meat and three starches "healthy" in schools.

It's really cool! I did a story about it last summer and was really amazed. Those kids knew more about vegetables and ate more vegetables than most adults and they learned a lot about responsibility.

I'm applying to grad school this year, so we might move to NC or Boston. NC would be so much cheaper. It would be easier to stay in LA though.

My parents' first house in suburban Buffalo cost $65,000 in 1983. *cries* It's worth about $200k today.

I also have a journalism degree. Why? I wanted to be a creative writer but needed something that would give me a job. I should have looked into starting salaries for journalists before deciding on that.

That's pretty awesome, though, at least as a start.  We still have a huge fried foods section in our cafeteria although, to be fair, there are healthier options available, too.  For the HS students it's not that bad, but I wonder how children make good choices with so many bad options.  We don't have soda machines anymore, either, which is also good.  No one needs to be hyped up on sugar and caffeine before they come to English class, LOL

  • NP- YES! If you were a little child, would you choose the pizza or would you choose the baked chicken? I think nutrition starts in the classroom (and of course at home but you can't force parents). If children are excited about nutrition, they will be more inclined to make healthy choices.

Wow. Just... wow. That's crazy! I don't think our mortgage payment plus all utilities and internet are that much a month. I love the midwest for this. Although, I'd trade it all just to get out of Indiana.
  • Ricks, YGPM.

I know I chose rectangle pizza when I was in school. Then for supper we had Hamburger Helper. Little Debbies were sprinkled in between.

FI and I as adults have been actively trying to reverse bad habits of the past. We've switched to organic and started eating healthier partly because we don't want our future children to have bad eating habits and resulting health problems.

  • I think as long as schools have to pay for the food out of their budget, they are going to go for the cheaper alternatives.  Schools would rather have new books and educational things than expensive fresh fruits and veggies.  I dont agree with it, but thats the way it is.

I would rather bag a healthy lunch for my future kids and have them in classes with the best educational tools.

My mom is a cook in an elementry school.  She always has a healthy option for the kids.  Salads, fat free milk, etc.

My ex boyfriend's first job was in broadcast journalism and he made $17k a year. I know a few people who work in the industry, but it's tough. I work in online marketing now and I'm getting my MA in history, which was my minor in college. Hopefully doing a PhD in that. I like it. I like research. I like writing. The only thing is in history I don't have to interview people, for the most part!

That's about what prices are here too. We pay a little more than that for our 2 bedroom. $1400 would be a good price for a 2 bedroom in a good neighborhood in LA.

I'd love to live in Boston, but it would be just as hard to buy a house there as here! Plus, Fi's family lives there. ;-)

  • Fever greart article! MOWERS!! HAHAHA

There are ways to get healther alternatives without paying a butt load of money. Take the skin off the chicken, offer more vegetables and less starch. It may cost a little more but hat isn't the way it is and it needs to change. Children are getting type II diabetes, obesity related cancers, and hypertension/heart related problems at an alarming rate.

Your mom might have packed your lunch as a child but more parents are working out of the home and are busier these days, plus some parents just don't understand nutrition because they were never taught what was healthy.

Also, 30 years ago video games and a sedentary life style were not in the picture so a child could eat square pizza and ding dongs and then go burn the calories off outside. That isn't the case today.

The fact is we can either pay a little more in taxes to feed children a healthy lunch in the school systems or we can pay for their hospital bills later.

I agree ricks. Im on your side with this.  When I said that was the way it is I didnt mean that it should stay that way.

The ways that schools would be able to find that money right now is by doing what they are already doing, cutting gym classes and sports which kind of defeats the purpose.  They then will cut the arts programs.

There are schools around here that have banned bake sales.  The sports teams have the sales to raise money for kids who cant afford the $300 participation fee to play.  Other schools have them to raise money for field trips and other programs.

My parents didnt have money when we were little.  Both of my parents worked.  We never got to go to McDonalds or Burger King and cookies and ice cream were a once and a while treat.

I agree with you.  Things need to change, but I cant agree that the solution is to tax us more.  Maybe the government can take money from silly things that it gets wasted on and give more for lunches.  Or work out deals with local farms that are struggling.  That way its a win win for everyone.  The farmers make money and the kids get some fresh foods.

Also, its sad that the health classes get cut too.  It would seem to me that educating kids early on making healthy choices would be helpful.

  • See I wouldn't mind paying more in taxes for healthier lunches and I don't have kids and I am semi-republican :)

That being said, yes, if they can find an alternative way that would be even better. But where do we get the money?

Yes, it's does suck that health programs get cut. Kids need exercise. Plus those programs build self confidence and leadership.
