[QUOTE]In Response to Re: COL living Map : FI would want to lie in Salem if we could. His parents live in Middlesex County, but kinda far out, so they're about 30 minutes from the city. I don't think housing prices are too bad around them now, but... no.

  • When I lived outside of DC Scott and I had a combined income of $75k (when he was working overnights and we were both pulling 55+ hour weeks). We were paying $1450 a month for rent on our 1 1/2 bedroom and 1 bathroom apartment. We were also considered to be quite poor (I believe the average as of a few years ago was $150k/household due to all the laywers/doctors/govt people).

I took a different job, so we make a lot less now, but our COL is also drastically lower. Gas is 30 cents cheaper, there are less car taxes, and we are saving $300 a month on living expenses (mortgage, utilities). Our insurance also dropped drastically.

In our old city we couldn't even get a 1 bedroom house for our budget, here we could have bought a 4 bedroom, 3 bathroom model home (but fell in love with the 3 bedroom/3 bath home we have now )

[QUOTE]In Response to Re: COL living Map : I'm applying to grad school this year, so we might move to NC or Boston. NC would be so much cheaper. It would be easier to stay in LA though. My parents' first house in suburban Buffalo cost $65,000 in 1983. *cries* It's worth about $200k today. I also have a journalism degree. Why? I wanted to be a creative writer but needed something that would give me a job. I should have looked into starting salaries for journalists before deciding on that.

We haven't looked into job in is career outside of LA. I am pretty sure there is a lot. It would be easier to stay in LA for us as well. Right now we own a condo and if we sell we wouldn't get any profit on it and maybe break out even. We want to buy a house but I don't see that happening anytime soon. FI would love to sell and rent till we could by again but right now for what I would pay in rent I could pay my mortgage. My aunt just moved back here from Utah and she was paying $900 for a 3bd 2bath brand new house and that's including HOAs and now she's paying about $1200 for a 2bd 1bath.
  • jeezus, living in the NE sucks.

Texas rocks, yall should all move here.
