gahhh allergies

Anyone else's allergies really bad this summer?  Any home remedies?  I feel like I have a sinus infection and an ear infection, but the doc said there's nothing.

Re: gahhh allergies

  • Horrible this year.

i just keep drinking OJ to de-gunkify my throat and use eyedrops to keep my eyes from looking like I'm stoned.

The allergy medicines all make me feel weird so i don't use them unless it's important.

When my allergies really act up I like to lie with a cold and wet cloth on my eyes (if they are irritated). My allergies have been a bit of a problem but not for the past month or two, apparently this year has just been really awful for allergies everywhere.

I suspect its because of the bee populations, they arent doing with the pollen in the volume they normally do because their populations are depleted so there is more floating around in the air than normal.

I have no other solutions though. You might want to start incorporating local honey into your diet, that will help for next year - you build natural antibodies to the local pollens.
  • I am actually blessed with no allergies, but my ex boyfriend has horrible allergies year round.

One fall when I was helping my dad combine barley, my ex (well, then-boyfriend) came out to the field to ride with me for a while and in the process got some barley dust in his beard.  It's itchy even if you don't have allergies but yeah, he got the nastiest rash down his neck I've ever seen... gross!

My mom swears by gargling salt water.  But not really sure if that helps much?

  • My allergies were acting up pretty badly back in June. My asthma, too. They've calmed down now with the exception of last weekend. We stayed at FI's aunt and uncle's house. FI pulled out a couple pillows and blanket from their closet for us to sleep on and something about them made my allergies go crazy. I thought I was going to die.

Anyway, this isn't a home remedy, but Claritin-D usually works best for me.

Ive only ever heard of gargling salt water if you have a sore throat and if you have a wound (dental) in your mouth. It heals it faster. So technically it could work for allergies, I just dont know how.
  • Oh, I hear good things about netti pots, too.

Yeah - that's what I've heard too.  But like I said, I don't really know how effective it would be against allergies :(  Wish I had more for ya.

  • I'll admit, on this one I jump for the drugs, because mine are so bad, they make me sick. My favorite go-to drug has been Alevert. It dissolves on the tongue (get the citrus flavor) and has none, zero, ziltch side effects. No drowsiness, no jitters, no cotton mouth, nothing. But, it takes 24 hours to work, so you just take it every day through allergy season, and just don't experience allergies.

  • Oh, I love my drugs.  I'm currently on Zyrtec, Flonase, and Sudafed.  Yup. I'm a druggie (hey, it's the combo recommended by the pharmacist!)

I never never had allergies until I moved to The Cities, though; I blame the crappy air.

Nebb- that's really interesting about the honey.  Guess it can't hurt anything, huh?  I love me some honey, anyway.

It's weird. My eyes haven't been as bad as normal, but the last few weeks my throat and ears have been so painful.
  • My allergies and asthma have been acting up terribly this year.  I wish I could find an anti-histamine that neither induces drowsiness, nor is non-drowsy.  Benedryl works wonders on my allergies but the next day I feel like I'm in a fog all day.  Non-drowsy meds all either knock me out or hype me up to the point where I'm shaking.

In short, I'm still trying to find a good solution.

And betrothed, I'm disgusted with most of the comments that you have posted. I don't think I've ever read such judgmental comments in my life. I'm so lucky that the girls I speak to on theknot are nothing like you...I would've never come on here for ADVICE if I would've encountered a big a bitch as you. I genuinely feel awful for your children or your future children, and I think it would be irresponsible of YOU not to invest in their future therapy sessions starting now. Because trust me when I tell you honey, they're gonna need it. ~jcaruncho2010

If you find a 24 hour one that works well, but knocks you out, just take it at night.  It should still work though most of the next day but you don't have to worry about being too sleepy.  Also, I find that my allergy meds work better when I take them at night anyway.  Plus it gets rid of that awful itchy throat, stuffy nose "omg I need my allergy meds before I die" feeling first thing in the morning.  Or waking up to it an hour before the alarm.

Good thinking.  I have yet to find a 24 hour one that worked for me, but I'll keep this in mind.

<div>Exactly. My OTC Zyrtec knocks me out, but I take it about an hour before bed.  I'm fine by the morning (after my cup of coffee/tea/Diet Coke of course.)</div><div>

If your allergies are really bad, you can also try taking Zantac (ranitidine)- it blocks a different histamine receptor with the idea of a "complete histamine blockade".  This would be in addition to your Zyrtec.  Also a Neti-Pot might be a good idea for you- I haven't used it but people swear by them.  Also saline nasal sprays are good since you can use them every day, several times a day if you want, and don't have to worry about rebound congestion.

ETA: I also recommended Sudafed then saw you were already taking it.  How much do you take a day?
