Oh wow, this is terrible.  I feel so bad for your brother and you both   I'll keep you both in my thoughts and prayers. 

FI cousin had the exact same thing happen to him when he was 17.  6'5" and only 180lbs.  I'm texting him now to find out more details about the surgery and recovery time.

I got some scoop from FI cousin.  I guess in his situation because he was so tall and thin, his lungs grew longer (?) than average.  It caused some small holes at the top of one of his lungs.  He was in the hospital for about a week with a tube trying to re-inflate the lung and it wasn't successful.  So they basically told him the same thing about removing the tube and waiting for the lung to deflate completely, but he wasn't allowed to go home.  He said he thinks it was something like 16 days before they were able to do the surgery.  Maybe that is promising that your brother will be ok and make it through the wedding

He also said that the doctors told him it would be super painful when his lung finally collapsed, but that it wasn't as bad as he expected.  It was more uncomfortable then painful.  FIs cousin later had to have part of the same lung removed because he smoked and caused additional damage to that lung.  Good incentive for your brother to never pick up the habit of smoking!

I'll be pray for a miracle for your brother and maybe his lung will magically re-inflate on it's own.  I'm hoping the best all the way around, I can't imagine how tough of a situation this is to deal with on top of the wedding chaos.

hey, de-lurking quick....fi has this problem, i sent you a lengthy pm.  keeping everyone in your family, especially ethan, in my thoughts.  things will be okay.  promise - fi's been dealing with them for almost 10 years now and he's still kicking (and health-fully, except for those dang things!)

DmIller, thanks a lot for that! We've heard the long and thin reasoning A LOT lately. it's really strange. Hopefully it'll wait until after the wedding and he'll have a speedy recovery.
