Snarky Brides

So sick of this.

I work at a media company that does both television and radio - I work on the radio side.  I can't even remember how this happened but two years ago I got harrassed and roped into helping the television side with many of their on-air projects and other things - mostly that include voice-over work.

I don't get paid to do any of this work.  I do it because there's no one else in the television department that either can do it, or is willing to do it.  And I guess I'm a pushover.  But I'm nearing my breaking point.

I always get these scripts for upcoming televised breaks that the producer insists have to be voiced ZOMG RIGHT NOW, but I always make sure all my newsroom obligations are finished before starting on the tv stuff.  I get them done when I can.  It wouldn't be so bad... but ALWAYS after I get done with them, a few days later, the producer sends another email full of revised scripts, or scripts with this changed or that done differently.  And so they have to be re-recorded ZOMG RIGHT NOW again.

I want to tell them to eff off so bad.  I have my own work to do and I'm so sick of dealing with their crap.

Work stuff that pisses you off?  Stuff you get roped into doing?  Can you not say no to something?  Go.

  • Dude, let them know that you need to discuss pay for all of these extra responsibilites. It is cutting into your other work, and if they won't be compensating you for it, you will no longer be doing it for free.

  • I get pissed when people come up to the bar and order 8 shots.  8 DIFFERENT shots.  All chilled.

Sorry hunny, I dont have enough shakers for that, you are all getting kamakazies.

  • Yeah, I can't say no.  I get roped into doing things all the time.  I refuse to get into specifics here because I'd be throwing a giant pity party, but let's just say when I get roped into things, it involves me getting my ass kicked.  Literally.

  • I said No today, and I was rather proud of myself.
I work in a library, and I've been moving books for weeks. Well, my boss is an ass, and wouldn't wait to move the reference section. I told him I wouldn't move it until we had a plan. He had them moved, and now they are all in the wrong place. I told him I'm not fixing it.
(Until tomorrow, when I know I'll end up fixing it, because it's bothering me.)

  • I can't say no.  I've quit my part-time retail job about 3 times, and guess what?  I'm still working there.  I just got a full-time teaching job for the fall, so I'm about to quit again...but I know I'll be back, because the manager will call and ask ever-so-sweetly if I could just come in for one more floorset because she reeeeeally needs the help, and I'll be dragging my butt in again on Sunday mornings at 7.  Ugh.
  • Sounds like your boss needs to get involved, your job description needs to be revised, AND you need a pay increase!

If you're expected to do work for the other side, it has to be incorporated into your workload with reasonable expectations.  That's how a good business is run.  (not saying that I'm at a good business,  just saying...)

I got annoyed when they said "To keep your job you have to move from California to Minnesota."

    Good luck!

  • Jen, that is amazing.  I'm going to just put my phone up to my computer and press that when my manager calls...
  • Hahaha, Jen, that's awesome!  I'm emailing it to my boss right now.  She'll love it.

  • I say no all the time at work.

"I need you to come and 3 hours early and work an event for free"-- no

"You need to wear this hooker corset like the rest of the girls"---no

"You need to add our clubs fan page to your facebook page and sign up to get email and texts blasts everyday"--no

"I need you to train this girl who has never bartended in her life during your busiest money making shift, for free"--no

"No" works great for me, lol

  • Jasmine--I know with me, and several of my friends, we have a difficult time saying no because we hate confrontation, but that's not always a men/women thing--though most of the men I'm close with do not have that same issue with confrontation.  And I hate disappointing people, so I try to do what I can to help out, even if I don't want to.

On the topic of not being able to say no, I'm off to VBS at my church.
  • Oh Jen, I love you.

Me personally? Not at all. My gravestone will say "Not a Doormat". I really hate seeing other people get taken advantage of.

I do think women in general may have a hard time saying no because they don't want to be thought of as difficult or bitchy.

Along this same line; I work in law enforcement.  It's a lot more difficult for a woman to be authoritative without coming off as a bitch than for a guy.  There are things that my male coworkers say to people and get away with because they're guys, that would get me a written complaint if I were to say them.

It could just be that I am kind of a bitch IRL.  :)

Seriously though, I have no problem with confrontation or standing up for myself, so it makes it easier to flat out say no.

Plus, I work in nightclubs.  Its not exactly the most professional environment.

It irritates me too.  The good thing that has come it, though, is that unlike my coworkers, I have developed the ability to put people in their place without raising my voice or getting nasty.  I can write a $300 penalty, and have the person thank me before they walk out the door.

I envy your ability to do this. Whenever I'm assertive I always end up sounding like a megabitch

  • I want to please everyone - that gets me in trouble, because you can't.

J has a work ethic like I've only seen in 4 people - my grandfathers, my dad, and my brother. Well, and my sister in law (I never knew anyone would love working with asses - literally. She's an "ass nurse." - no idea what her official title is, but can you imagine?). I think part of it is in truly loving what you do, being good at it, and knowing how to be accountable.
