I had a woman tell me yesterday, that I was rude to her because she was Mexican.

WE were interrupted by a woman, who wanted to know where T-Mobile was. I answered her quickly, and the woman I was helping said "If I was White, you wouldn't have done that. But I'm Mexican, so you think it's ok to be rude to me."

I just started at her for a second, handed her her cards, said "I"m Mexican too. Have a nice day."

I was quite irritated for the rest of the day.

I agree in some cases.  In some cases, I disagree.  It's become painfully clear to me that as a society many people have become very unable to see things from others' points of view.  It's even apparent in this thread with how many people are saying "I just don't think there is any reason to get offended by someone wishing you Merry Christmas."

  • OMG this reminds me of the time this dude at my college in my Mythology class wished me a Happy Kwanzaa right before winter break, with this proud look on his face like he was super proud of his diversity.  I was all "Uhhh.  Thanks?"  My bestie was in the same class with me and she gave me a "Whaaaaat the f*ck???" look that was classic.

I have to disagree with this, and the reason is because you have to take into context what the sentiment behind the phrase is.  I'm not going to ask everybody I see "excuse me, what holiday do you celebrate so I know how to properly wish you a happy "insert here"?"  Because that's being kind of intrusive and overbearing.  If someone, for example, wished me a "Happy Hanuakka (and I know I butchered the spelling)", I wouldn't be offended.  I would think it was amusing, because I'm blatantly not Jewish.  But I wouldn't be offended, because they were trying to basically say "have a good holiday season" and I just can't bring myself to get angry about that.

Yes, but my point is that just because YOU'RE not offended by it doesn't make it unreasonable for others to be offended, regardless of context.  Yes, it does make it unreasonable for someone to be a huge asshole and lecture you and be rude because you accidentally wished them a happy wrong holiday, but I don't think it's at all unreasonable to be offended even if the intent is good.

And KD, that's what I was trying to convey by agreeing in some cases but not others.  There are definitely drama llamas that overreact and look for things to get angry about.

I agree with this.  This guy I'm friends with on FB gest offended when people say "Happy Holidays" to him.  This is his daily FB status throughout the holiday season  "People at the bank and the mall, you can tell me Merry Christmas not Happy Holidays because Christmas is what this season is supposed to be about!"

That statement does nothing but cause drama IMO.

I agree with you and J&K.  In my mind the whole looking to take offense thing goes both ways.  Some people are looking to be offended by others saying "Merry Christmas" and some people are looking to be offended by others not saying it, or even in some cases, by not believing in the same things they do.

  • I think we should start a holiday, like "Everyone Be Nice to Each Other Day" and celebrate in December. That way, we could say Happy Holidays, and no one would have "cause" to be offended.

I think I'd really like someone to wish me Happy Hanukah or Happy Kwanza. I think I just like to spread the cheer as long as possible. Because that's what these holidays are supposed to be: happy. Not stressful or expensive, just happy.

On that note, I had to have a 20 minute conversation with a customer at work last year who was upset that our signs above the holiday cards said Holiday Cards instead of Christmas cards. It took me that long to explain that not everyone celebrates Christmas, so we wanted to include everyone. He just didn't get it.

Did you have generic cards, and Hannukah and Kwanzaa cards too?  Because I could understand the confusion if all your "holiday cards" said "Merry Christmas."

  • I hate that whole hullabulloo, J&K.  Like, I'm not offended by the logo - then again, it's not MY culture that's being used as a mascot.  I can understand why they're offended and even though I really do like the logo and mascot, I believe it should be changed because it will be a controversy until it IS changed.

With that said, it has always bothered me that the Standing Rock tribe has never been allowed to vote on the issue.  When the Spirit Lake tribe voted it was overwhelmingly in support of the use of the logo, and the leadership at Standing Rock refuses to allow a vote.  I think that's lame.

...and this has nothing to do with Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays but whatever :)

  • I can understand why people would get offended because of the assumption that they celebrate Christmas, but I'm with the majority here.  It doesn't bother me, and as a Christian who celebrates Christmas, it also wouldn't bother me to be wished "Happy Hannukuh/Kwanzaa/Holidays."  I agree that it's the intent behind the wishes.  Why get all up in arms because someone is wishing you well for a day?

When I worked in retail at Christmas time, I always waited until Christmas Eve to start saying "Merry Christmas".  I worked in a store that sold all women's items, so any man in there on December 24th was almost definitely buying a gift, so I assumed they celebrated Christmas.  I never had any complaints, but any time before then I just wished them a good day/evening so I wouldn't offend anyone.

No, but really, if you celebrate an obscure holiday it's a little ridiculous to expect the whole world to acknowledge it, especially around their favorite holiday. Nebb said it best, intent is what matters and "Merry Christmas" is just so jolly I don't see how it's offensive.

Now Christmas celebrations (i.e. makings stockings, decorating a tree) at a public school I side eye, because that to me is kind of denying other religions and mixing church and state. And I'm well aware I'm in the minority here.

I agree.  How do you feel about getting time off for Good Friday and Easter?  In my district growing up, they just timed Spring Break to be then, but around here, they get a separate spring break, and they get Friday and Monday off for Easter Break.

  • We never got either of those days off (well, Easter, being it's on a Sunday)!

But in our district (and I think the whole country) a school must permit a child excused absence on their religious holiday, so any kid who complains about a free day off is just being a snot. :P
