Ya I suppose it could include Christmas and New Years, makes sense. I just think its silly that we even have to be so cautious about what/how we say Merry Christmas/Happy New Year/Happy Holidays. Maybe I'm just forgetting, but when I was a kid I don't recall it ever being given a second thought.

Wrong again.  Do you think before you post?.

"Happy Holidays" includes holidays such as Christmas, New Years, Hannukah, Kwanza, and any other holiday that may be celebrated during this time of year.  It is not solely inclusive of Christian holidays and federal holidays.

  • It doesn't bother me, but I celebrate Christmas. I don't think it's unreasonable for it to bother someone though. I make a point to only say "Merry Christmas" if I know the person celebrates Christmas. Otherwise I wish them "Happy Holidays", "Happy Hanukkah" when applicable (though it's over now), etc. If I don't know, it's always "Happy Holidays". I even buy two different boxes of cards I send out this time of year, one Christmas themed, one "Holiday Holidays" or "Season's Greetings" as I send cards to non-Christians too. It seems odd for me to wish someone a Merry Christmas if they don't celebrate. It feels like wishing someone a Happy Birthday when it's not their birthday.

Yeesh, maybe you are a troll.

I think this thread proves that you don't need to be cautious - most people would take a Merry Christmas in stride even if they don't celebrate Christmas. On the other hand, there's nothing wrong with saying Happy Holidays in recognition of the fact that there are other religious holidays in December as well. Like, I dunno, Hannukah.

That "Christians stole Christmas" bullcrap really annoys me. Every religion has adopted the beliefs of every other religion since the dawn of time. If the Christians "stole" things, they learned how to do it from the masters, considering Christianity grew up in the shadow of the Roman Empire.

Anytime somebody tries that line on me, I ask them to explain to me why there's a Temple of Isis in Pompeii.

I don't understand how anyone could be offended if they were told "Merry Christmas" with a genuine smile.

And I think people who do get bent out of shape over it need to remove the thorny stick from their ass.

ETA - Same goes for "Happy Holidays."  When people tell me "Happy Holidays" I don't assume, as a Christian (which I so am), that they're "taking the Christ out of Christmas" or "forgetting the reason for the season."  I just assume they want me to have a nice holiday season.  Frick.

  • I actually like Happy Holidays better just because to me it includes Christmas (plus other religious holidays) and New Years. So I can just get it all out of the way in two words.
  • I'm not offended by "Merry Christmas", but I do get annoyed hearing it so much this time of year.  My first name is Mary.  People here don't generally pronounce "Merry" and "Mary" differently.  Imagine if everyone went around calling your name for a month.  It's annoying.

I say "Happy Christmas" or happy whatever holdiay it happens to be that day.
  • edited December 2010
I said Happy Holidays to a customer at work, and he turned around, walked back in, and said "You can say Merry Christmas here". I just kind of looked at him. Yes, I know what I CAN say. However, working at the mall, we have many many Muslim tenants, and I'm not going to exclude them, just because one customer may possibly celebrate Christmas.

ETA: Not to say some of them DON'T celebrate. Just as a precaution. I'd rather not cause tension, with people I have to interact with daily.
  • Happy Winter Solstice, y'all!

I can get how people would be offended at Merry Christmas if they don't celebrate.  Just because I do (and therefore wouldn't be offended, or wouldn't be offended if I was wished Happy Kwanzaa, Hannukah, etc) doesn't mean I can't see it from another's point of view.  I understand that it's usually with good intention, but I can still see how someone would get irritated or offended.

With that said, I typically don't wish anyone anything if I don't know their beliefs or they don't wish me a "happy something" first.  Not because I'm worried about offending them, but because I wouldn't want people going around assuming my beliefs, so I don't go around assuming theirs.

[QUOTE]I'm not offended by "Merry Christmas", but I do get annoyed hearing it so much this time of year.  My first name is Mary.  People here don't generally pronounce "Merry" and "Mary" differently.  Imagine if everyone went around calling your name for a month.  It's annoying.  I say "Happy Christmas" or happy whatever holdiay it happens to be that day.
