I agree with AATB, you cant get rid of an icon. Have both.

  • There should be both. Cookies in moderation.

  • I thought veggie monster could be cookie monster's GF. They could blance each other out.
    image
  • No way! If its a way to get kids to eat more veggies I don't think it will work that well.

Yeah that's a really good idea!

  • Sesame Street is brought to you today by the letters B and S.

    image
  • Those look like grapes, cherries and bananas.  So this Veggie Monster is apparently a dumbass.

  • I should write SS a letter. :)
    image
  • New friend Veggie Monster rocks. Substitute Veggie Monster for Cookie monster is fucking stupid. Someone probably sued Toll House and Sesame Street together, and this is what we get. DAMNIT! :)
  • I bet so Bec!

    image
  • Veggie Monster looks like grass that came to life.

Other than that, I have no opinion. I've never seen SS so I have no real connection to the cookie monster. I barely even know who he is outside of people referencing him. But I agree it would be a great balance to have both.

  • I guess Vaggie Monster was a little too risque.

San Francisco just passed a resolution to not allow sales of kids meals to include toys unless they have a healthy side instead of fries.

I realize that a lot of Americans make bad food choices, and I realize that as a nation, the financial burden of increased volume of medical treatments for obesity-related conditions means health insurance costs go up for everyone, but this nanny-state business is getting kind of ridiculous.  I'm all for elementary and high school students growing vegetable gardens and using the produce for the school meals, but tying fast food kids meal toys to healthy foods seems like a stretch.

Likewise, replacing the cookie monster with a veggie monster seems a bit silly to me.  I agree with PPs that a new veggie monster friend would be great though.  (S)he and cookie monster can argue about whether cookies or veggies are better, and why.  :)

  • They are trying to be a part of helping the nation fix the childhood obesity epidemic. This in't going to help.

  • Why do they have to fuuck up everything that's good and ruin it for everyone?

When I was little (3ish) I had a Cookie Monster jacket. It was blue and fuzzy and had googly eyes on the top of the hood. It was awesome.

  • We all better stock up on cookie monster stuff b/f thay put him on a diet!

[QUOTE]Ahh more blather about healthy eating for the tykes while the parents reach for the chips OR alternativley allow the kid - and themselves to have so little in the way of anything beyond healthy gruel (if anything) that s/he grows up obsessed with food and vaguely unhealthy be they thin or fat. We need to get past our cultural eating disorder(s). I like Bert and Ernie, they have better things to think about than what's for dinner tonight.

This is what I said in class. They are demonizing treats and fast food. It's going to cause unhealthy views about food. I also hated that "experiment" that 30 Days guy did with the mcdonalds and a normal restaurant burger and fries in glass jars.

AIR does not = gastric juices.

  • This is so stupid. I think veggie monster would be fne as long as it's not replacing cookie monster.

  • I grew up in a household where my mom always baked homemade cookies and pies a lot.  She took us to McDonald's once in a while.  And yet, no one in my family is obese or even remotely close to overweight.

And we all loved Cookie Monster, dammit.  Jen - lol, I think a Cookie Monster coat would be sweeeeeeeeet.

I hear ya- its called moderation.
  • If they're changing him to veggie monster to set a good example, then they should really consider having the characters all speak with proper English.  Something like "me no likey" is cute and all, but what is that teaching a kid?

[QUOTE]Are they serious? No more cookie monster? I think its a travesty, honestly. <strong>Its not like Cookie Monster made me eat more cookies when I was a kid- so I don't think Veggie Monster will make kids eat more veggies.</strong>

<div>This. I watched SS religiously as a child and we didn't even have cookies in the house. How is Veggie Monster gonna help the kids who's parents don't have any vegetables in the house? It's not like the 5 year old is gonna stand up and say, "I'm gonna go boil some peas!", we need to be teaching the parents more than the children, imo.</div><div>
</div><div>ETA: think of kids you know 7 and under, do they even let any thing green near their mouth? Unfortunately, none I know do, which makes me sad because me and my brother put our noses up but still ate it.</div>

And stop hanging out with Shaggy in the Mystery Machine getting all... hungry and then go searching for Scooby snacks.

  • Veggie Monster looks as if he's going to cause some kids some spasms if he moves too much..

  • Ironically Scooby-Doo has been getting more risqué in the new episodes. My friend was watching a recent episode with her son and Scooby catches Shaggy and Velma making out... then Scooby accuses Shaggy of cheating on him.

And I agree that the Veggie Monster isn't going to help. I mean, the Cookie Monster didn't make us gorge on cookies, why do they think the Veggie Monster would make us gorge on vegetables. And, furthermore, they're vegetables, not "veggies." Sorry to sound nitpicky, but I don't like encouraging kids to use shortened words like that.
    image
  • I don't mind. I think we're all getting upset over this because it's a nostolgic part of our childhoods, but for the up coming generation, all they're remember is veggie monster, rather than cookie monster. And that's okay for things to evolve, IMO. Have you seen the original episodes of SS? I don't think they'd be considered appropriate for children today. But then, 35+ years ago, toddlers didn't watch TV...

  • I hope that Veggie Monster is just like a cousin or something that comes to visit to SS, and then after he leaves, Cookie Monster and Grover totally rag on him.
