I had a friend growing up named Jennifer. Her family was: Janice, Jimmy, Jennifer, Jacob, Josh, and Ryan.   Ryan was obviously an older child from a previous marriage of the mom.

My sister is married to a guy who's parents named all their kids with K's.  Kyla, Katherine, Kody, KURTIS (my sister's husband), Klint.  Yeah.  Kurtis with a K.

Ah, poor Ryan!  I can't imagine how left-out he must feel.  That's basis for some deep-seated resentment.

I think he was glad his name didn't start with J LOL. He never seemed to mind anyways.

I can see "K"urtis but Klint?  I knew an ABC family like in "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers".

My name, Betty, is not legally my name. It was never an issue until we sent out STDs and some people were like who is Elizabeth Lillian? Then I have to explain it's actually a common nickname for Elizabeth in England. Although I can think of a much worse nickname for Elizabeth, the Queen's is Lillibet. The issue of my real name vs. my nickname only arises when I use my credit card in a group and the waiter calls out first names or legal documents need to be signed. I have often thought of going by Elizabeth now but I can't imagine having my friends of 20 + years deciding to go by another name and actually calling them that. I think some people call their children by their middle name because they were named after other family members who were still living. That way there would be no confusion. I like different names especially when they are from a different culture and brought into our country. At least there is meaning behind the choice and having pride in your heritage means something to me. Most of the time those names aren't so rare for those people and their families. Of course off the wall ridiculous names are just that sometimes...ridiculous. I don't care for random, original spellings of typical names. Why would you do that to a child? That child will have to constantly correct the spelling of their name. But I don't see the need for people to modernize their cultural or ethnic name choices because they live in the U.S. or anywhere else for that matter.

Okay, here's mine. My son got a 39 on his spelling test last week. He was sick Monday and Tuesday last week when I had him so I never saw the spelling words. And then he 'studied' them with his dad during the week. The way it worked out with our schedule, I didn't see his spelling test until Wednesday. If he wanted to try again to get a maximum score of a 70, he had to do it by Tuesday. So now he is stuck with a 39. I am so annoyed that a) he got the 39 in the first place because in 1sT grade, it's mostly the parents fault and b) the fact that he could have brought the grade up but his dad didn't say anything to me or the teacher about it. So this week I worked on his spelling words with him. I am hoping he scores really well so I can point out to my ex that we need to focus more on school work and less on the video games they play every day together. I mean, he scored a 69 on a class assignment and they sent it home so I had my son correct his mistakes and send it back for a 70. I know it's only 1 point, but my son was so excited to show me he got an extra point for making those corrections. 1st grade is a lot harder than I remember it. I will feel like a failure if he doesn't get all As on his report card.

Most of the time those names aren't so rare for those people and their families. This is the case for DH's family.  His parents moved here from Vietnam about 35 years ago so all of their children have Vietnamese names.  His legal name is Nhyanh, but since most people don't know how to say that, his parents let him choose his own "American" name when he started elementary school, and he chose David.  Only his family calls him his legal name, and everyone else calls him David.  It does get confusing though, because we had to create 2 different sets of STDs, invitations, and return labels.  It's funny because most of his really close friends didn't even know for a long time that David wasn't his real name!

I totally don't go for the matchy names or generational names.  My grandfather, dad, brother, and nephew are Charlie, Chuck, Charlie, and Charles...all with the first name Charles and the middle name Franklin.   That is very confusing and annoying.  Thank goodness I'm not a boy so I don't have to carry it on.My aunt's kids are Terri, Troy, Tom, and Tony.Aghh...my FI goes by his middle name Mark because his first name is a weird family name. LOL.

Also notable is my dad and my brother go to the same doctor and they always get their medical records confused.

haha I'm almost sorry I brought up the names thing.  it has commandeered FFF and made it much less fun than it usually is.  ;)

My dad is a Charles (my mom started calling him "Charlie" and now every one else does) but he hated Chuck.  Up Chuck.  He hates it.

My dad wanted a Jeffrey Jr., but my brother was born on his birthday. They decided against the same name because it could really cause confusion paired with the same birthday.

I just want to point out that even those with "normal" spellings of names STILL have to correct the spelling. I find myself correcting myself a LOT because people want to add an extra a in my name. Racheal instead of Rachel. My aunt can't even remember how to spell my name correctly. Or my grandmother. I find myself spelling my name more often because of this crap! It's only frustrating because it's the simple spelling and not some random spelling like Rhachelle or something off the wall like that.

I'll try to change the subject:I'm seriously considering running over the next TAMS kid that steps out in front of my car, notices that I'm slamming on my breaks AND STOPS.  Also considering running over cyclists that seem to think that stop signs don't apply to them.  I really wish the Denton and UNT cops that are so picky about that 20 MPH speed limit would start fining cyclists who nearly cause wrecks by refusing to pay attention to anything or anyone else on the road.

I can't remember if I already posted this because I was thinking about it after an article I read. If I did then sorry. It annoys me in articles, press, comments, and letters when plus sized women are referred to as REAL women with a such a big emphasis on real. I get that people are trying to make a statement about unrealistic body images, but it still annoys me. Am I not a real woman if I'm not plus sized?I just see this so much nowadays and the term irks me.

I honestly can't stand people on bikes on campus.  It's like, everyone else has to follow the rules except them.  One of my friends got clipped by a guy on a bike once while walking to class - he broke her elbow, and he didn't even stop until someone ran in front of him and forced him to.Some guy at work who previously was really rude about holding a door open for me was in the elevator today.  I was walking down the hall, and I saw it was open so I yelled "hold the elevator please" and started jogging towards it.  The doors started to shut, and I had to shove them open to get inside - his response?  He laughs!  That's all, just laughs.  UGH!

I wish you could 'unsubscribe' from being invited to sales parties like Pampered Chef, Creative Memories, Tupperware, etc. I hate feeling obligated to go, then buy products and then possibly get duped into throwing my own party to dupe others.

A woman just told me that my marriage is never going to last because my husband travels a lot for work. WTF??!!
  • edited December 2011
WOW Emi - seriously?!?!?!   DH doesn't travel a lot, but we work completely different hours.. I think it helps keep excitement since we don't see each other all the time.

At the concert Wed night, The Ting Tings opened for P!NK. I had no f'in clue who the ting tings were... they played like 5 or maybe 6 songs.. and I sat there wondering what cave I have lived in not knowing about them because the crowd was going crazy. It wasn't until their last song that I figured out who they were.

Um, I was horrified! Backstory: This girl I work with that has only been married a few months and I were talking. Her husband just took a new job that will require quite a bit of traveling and she was asking my advice about how to deal with it. Jeff has always traveled for work, way before we were engaged. I was telling her the pros/cons and this other bitter old woman chimed in and told me that my marriage won't last, "A husband should be home every night to be there emotionally and physically for his wife..." My job dropped... I told her that our marriage is stronger for it and if wasn't traveling, we'd be living on the streets.
