We're registered at 2 places, but I've read that 2-3 places is the norm. More than that(ie 4) is ok if you have a lot of people invited, but otherwise people might side-eye it.
i didn't want to register anywhere but people kept askig us, so I did 3 to assure all sorts of price-ranges from a couple dollars up. I also put on the gift page of my webstie that we don't expect a thing from our guests outside of their company. I just feel 'gift grabby' (I saw someone else say that and think it fit perfectly).

This. Getting various prices ranges is key! In my opinion, having only 1 registry of only big ticket items looks more grabby than 2-3 registries with a mix of prices.

We had this same problem. 2 of our registries are rather small items, but as we kept looking we found things. We have a few big ticket items that we REALLY need/want but doubt we will actually get lol!
I have 2 online registries and 1 "real store" registry. Not everyone want to shop online - as I've found with my Mom - she looked at the registry then found a store to buy the item at LOL. We also have a full house of stuff, so we've registered for things we really want, but have tried to register for a variety of price groups too.
We have two registries - Target and Macy's. I think that 2-3 is pretty typical. Like PP said, it is important to have a range of items wherever you register.
