What flavor frosting with almond cake?

My sis & I are making an almond cake for my wedding (yes, we've considered the logistics).  I settled on almond because I love the flavor and I think it appeals to the masses & is a bit different than plain 'ol vanilla.  I have a recipe (I've practiced once so far and it's fantastic in flavor and form).  I am having a very difficult time narrowing down my frosting & filling options.  If you were served almond cake, what flavor frosting/filling would you want?

PS: I will obviously practice with my choice, but need at least 2-3 to practice with to taste-test!

Re: What flavor frosting with almond cake?

  • I make almond cake a lot, and I suggest mixing a strawberry preserve or jelly into your vanilla buttercream frosting.  It complements the smooth flavor of the almond, without having to put actual fruit inside the cake.  My favorite is to mix Tastefully Simple's Rhubarb Strawberry fruit spread into my frosting, and cover the cake with it.

You could also do different flavors mixed in with the frosting for each tier. Maybe vanilla for one, strawberry for another, and blackberry. Or something along those lines.
  • I was at a bridal fair and a cake seller had a sample of almond cake with (i think it was) amaretto icing... it tasted really good! Don't know if that would be complicated though.

    Good luck!
  • the bakery i'm going with has their 'signature' flavor as an almond/raspberry cake (almond cake, raspberry filling).  I'm pretty sure they do a vanilla icing... but perhaps a light lemon might taste good as well?

the whole cake is very light - which is perfect for after a large wedding meal! =)
  • Almond one of my favorites!
I have it with champagne frosting or lavender.
