August Honeymooners - What Books are you Reading?

Seeking some book recs for my honeymoon (in less than two weeks, ahh!) - anyone read anything good lately? I've already read The Hunger Games, not really interested in the 50 Shades trilogy. Just need some good beach reads. Interesting but nothing too heavy.

Thanks, all!

Re: August Honeymooners - What Books are you Reading?

  • Here's my latest list of 'light' reads.  I'm picky about books, but all of these were hits for me:
    You Had Me at Woof
Big White Panties (very short read)
The Art of Racing in the Rain
and the Nancy Thayer books (very beach-y reads)

The one I'm reading now that I am not crazy about, but apparently everyone else in the world loves, is Let's Pretend this Never Happened.

  • Hello,
All Souls Trilogy, book 2 "Shadow of Night" by Deborah Harkness is what I'm currently reading and since the books are about 800 pages long- and I barely have time now- know that I will be taking with me. I strongly recommend book 1 "A Discovery of Witches". I read it last year while on vacation with FI for my bday and book 2 just came out. Love it.

I"m currently reading the Game of Thrones series, but each book in the series is over 800 pages.  If you are looking for something a little bit lighter, The Art of Racing in the Rain is great.
  • I like Joanne Fluke's 'baking' murder mysteries, and the scrapbook murder mystery series (can't remember who that's by off the top of my head). They're what I call fluffy books, quick reads, fun, not disturbing (even for murder mysteries).

Other than that, I read a lot of non-fiction, and that's not terribly beachy in my mind...
  • Right now I'm reading the "Bridal Series" by Nora Roberts. There are 4 books in the series, and they've been fun to read during the whole wedding process.
My book for the honeymoon will be, 50 Shades. But I'm in the mood to "escape."
  • I just finished, "I've Got Your Number" by Sophie Kinsella and enjoyed it as a light, fun read. I have read all her books and all are fun reads.

I also loved, "A Good Girl's Guide to Getting Lost," by Rachel Friedman.  And, "Life as I Know It," by Melanie Rose.

  • I'm reading "The Emperor of All Maladies" which is about cancer, so definitely not beachy, but it's fantastic so far!  If I were going to give you a more beachy read I've read lately, I'd suggest "The Fault in Their Stars" by John Green.  It's a young adult book (I'm a high school teacher, so I read a lot of that) and it's actually also about cancer, but it's fiction.  It's one of the best books I've read this year, so I'd recommend it.

I think they came out in 2011. The series is called "The Bridal Quartet".  They're definitely a good read. I'm on book #3 right now.
  • Thanks, everyone! I appreciate your suggestions.

mattylovesmilly - I read The Fault in Their Stars and loved it!

Lobsters25 - I actually tried to read Let's Pretend This Never Happened and I really didn't like it. It got a ton of good feedback, and I thought I was the only one who didn't dig it.
  • Gotta recommend Janet Evonovich's Stephanie Plum series ("One for the Money", "Two for the Dough", etc. through 18).  They're so lighthearted and funny and the characters are awesome - there's a little romance without being pornographic, and there's a little action without being stressful.  It's got good plot, great characters, and I laughed out loud about every 3-4 pages.

  • I love everything by PC Cast she has several books based on strong modern women placed in well known legends.  It is interesting to see how the legends may have been shaped if these stories were actually true.  Plus the romance is pretty hot.

Good choice on not reading Fifty Shades of Grey.  While it may spice up the bedroom there is no plot.
    Payday
  • Gone Girl is really good, although it's about a wife who disappears on her 5th wedding anniversary--may not be the best honeymoon read!

I also have Emily Giffen's latest but haven't read it.  May save it for the honeymoon in a few weeks
