Fish as Option?

Hi,
I was thinking of having either halibut or salmon as one of the entree choices and steak as the other.  Steak is a lot more pricey, and someone suggested to me that not a lot of people like fish or will choose fish.  I didn't want to do chicken because it to me is bland and I personally like fish.  What do you guys think?  And do you have a preference for halibut or salmonn?

Personally, I didn't start eating fish until I started travelling to the west and east coasts a few years ago.  Now that I'm on the east coast and can get fresh fish, I eat it a lot more.

I say this because you are in Minnesota and I grew up in the south and midwest where fish was always frozen, battered and deep fried.  Friends may be telling you that people don't like fish because they aren't used to eating good fish.  If this is the case, they aren't likely to order it at your wedding.

Between salmon and halibut, I would pick the halibut.  Salmon has a strong flavor that I happen to love but if you aren't used to eating it, it may not be something that you like.  Halibut is a flaky white fish that is much milder.

not everyone likes beef or fish so IMO you should really offer some type of chicken as a 3rd dish.  even though you might not choose to eat it it's a safe alternative for your guests.

fish is a good option if its fresh and if you're going to do steak, IMO, you should do it right using only good cuts not just whatever to save a few bucks

anyhow, if i had to choose between halibut and salmon i'd choose halibut.  salmon is a required taste to some where halibut is more almong the lines of "the chicken of the sea" like tuna is

I'm from Minnesota and I LOVE fish. I've probably eaten more fresh bass in my life than chicken, since I'm not a big fan of chicken and my whole family fishes. I would probably say salmon since more Midwestern people are used to salmon, but agree that halibut has a very neutral taste.

I like halibut and think it dries out less quickly than salmon.  You know your guests, are there people who'll eat fish?

I'm of the opinion that you should only serve food that you'd also be willing to eat, so if you don't like chicken, you shouldn't serve chicken.

I love both, really. I don't think you should feel pressured to offer chicken if it's not something you're inspired by.

I know a lot of people who like fish but not salmon, and quite a few people who don't care for fish at all.  If you were set on fish, I would go for halibut because it's more 'neutral', but we decided not to go with fish even though we both love it simply because so many of our family members dislike it.  If you know that most of your guests would eat fish, though, I would go for it.

I love salmon, that's what I would pick if it was a choice at a wedding

I think one red meat choice and one alternative is fine.  Salmon is a very popular fish in the US.  You are not a restaurant, so don't feel obligated to offer any more than 2 choices.  Think of it as that you are inviting friends and family to a party and they will be happy to have even 2 choices.

Out of the two, I'd choose Salmon.  The only fish I like is tuna and salmon.

My parents wanted fish as an option for our reception, we ended up doing three, chicken, steak, and salmon as a result.

Most people (except vegetarians) will be able to choose either fish or steak. Those are fine choices.

I would opt for the halibut also, even though I am a PNW native and I LOVE fresh caught salmon!

You may also want to offer a vegetarian dish, such as a pasta dish for your guests.  There are some that dont eat any meat at all, and make sure there are some salads available also.  There is no rule that says you must serve chicken.

Are you having a plated dinner or a buffet?

I'm not a huge fish eater. I HATE salmon, but I like white fish....like tllapia and mahi mahi. Halibut is alright...although it's a bit more dense. So I would prefer either of those over salmon.

I think every wedding I've been to in the Pacific Northwest has had salmon as an option. We love it here! (halibut, too). We're having salmon and chicken at our wedding. I wanted salmon and beef, but fiance decided that we should have a "safe" choice for all of our out-of-towners.

If you do halibut then you need to make sure that it is prepared well with good seasonings. If enough flavor isn't added you end up with a fillet of tasteless fish which would leave guest very unhappy. Salmon has  more natural flavor so it needs less added seasonings. Fish is a common entree choice at catered functions in CT.

We're doing salmon, primerib, and a stuffed portabello as the vegetarian option.
