vegan cake?

Im a vegan so im curious should i do a vegan cake so i can have some too? I generally dont notice the difference, but im afriad if people know its vegan they wont eat it, i dont want to do two cakes,
i guess another option would be something like cupcakes and half vegan half regular?...

thoughts? opinions? :D

Re: vegan cake?

  • I would just check around with bakeries! I would think they would be able to make one tier of your wedding cake vegan so you can enjoy your cake and you wont have to worry about your guests not enjoying it because they will also have their traditional cake!

Well unless the two teirs were not touching, i was prefering the look of a together cake and nothing split up apart,

You know your crowd, so maybe your concerns that they won't eat it are legit, but I would do it all vegan.  I would think that finding a vegan bakery that specializes in vegan cakes would be better, tastewise, than asking a regular bakery to make 1 tier vegan.

The vegan wedding I attended had all vegan cupcakes, although that was just the preference of the couple.  They weren't the best cupcakes I've ever had, but wedding cake is often sub-part, vegan or not, so I didn't really have high expectations.
  • A friend of mine did a vegan cake because her husband was vegan. It was absolutely fine. You really can't tell. (FWIW, they had 1 vegan entree and 1 chicken entree at the wedding, the salad course was vegan, and the passed hors d'oeuvres were either vegan or vegetarian.)

I would just find a vegan bakery who makes delicious cakes and not worry about it. I don't think you have to exactly advertise it as being vegan either if you are worried about people not trying it.  If you're concerned, take a carnivorous friend along to the tasting and I'm sure they will let you know if it "tastes vegan."

If you have a Whole Foods in your area, they make vegan cakes that are AMAZING, and I'm not vegan. They also make beautiful wedding cakes, so I would assume they could make a vegan wedding cake. I'd check them out.

  • I made my own cake that was vegan and then had non-vegan cupcakes that my caterer made. It worked out fine and people liked my cake and I was asked for the recipe, lol. I did look around for a vegan bakery but honestly...my cake was better, hah. You'd have to check your venue's rules about outside food but if you're a good baker, I'd say you know what you like best. If you have a favorite bakery, awesome, but otherwise, it's really not hard to do it yourself.

We had vegan mini-cupcakes and nobody could tell they were vegan. Just do it all vegan!
  • We're having a traditional cake and a vegan groom's cake.
  • All vegan gets my vote.

I don't know your reasons for being vegan, but to me I would feel like I was a horrible person for paying for a non-vegan cake and then serving it at my own wedding.

Especially if you live in a big city, there should be quite a few options for vegan cakes so take an omnivore with you to taste them and go for the bakery the omni likes best.
  • Bring some non-vegans to the cake tasting (eg. your parents or MOH) to get their opinions.  I'm sure it will still be good.

  • There are vegan cake recipes that are just as good as traditional cake recipes. Just like flourless chocolate Cake happens to be gluten free, I've had vegan cakes that are very tasty and just happened to be vegan.
