NWR: Valentines Idea

Ok so its about a month until Valentines. And since this is going to be our last unmarried Valentines I want to make it special. However, all our money is going to the Wedding and his birthday is the following week.

So what are you ladies planning for V-Day?

What was your most memorable V-Day?

I feel like I can never top our first Valentines when he took me to NYC and we went to see my favorite musical, had amazing French Cuisine, then went to the Empire State building!

I think our most memorable Valentine's might have been the one right before we got married.  We went to a wedding at the church where we were married and went out for burgers.  We might have ended up at a movie too but I just liked that we were at a wedding.

    Oooh, I like this!

I think our most memorable one was our first one when we were dating (so 2007).  We went to Lola in Uptown (which has since closed :().  It was this intimate fancy restaurant where you got a 5-course dinner.  I got all dressed up and it was just really, really fun.

This year we'll probably use the GC we got for Christmas for Bailey's Prime Rib.  We're having a big weekend the weekend before with hotel, dinner, Cirque de Soleil, etc.

We've gone to the nice restaurants and plan big date nights and hotel/inn stays...but to be honest the most memorable times we've spent together (Valentines & New Years especially) are when we stay home and cook something we've never cooked before, together.

I set the table all nice with candles and fresh flowers we just enjoy a great meal, good wine, and usually a good movie at home.

We might be lame, though.  LOL, idk.

Valentines has never worked out so well for us...

The first year he took me to Bellini's in Uptown.  IT was delicious, but a weeknight, and we were crammed in a corner/walkway.  So it was a little awkward.

The next year we went to Ft Worth.  We did this Urban scavenger hunt that morning, then stayed at the renaissance hotel downtown and had dinner out there.  Would have been awesome, but I was sick and miserable.

Last year, I had surgery the week before and was still recovering.  We had to cancel all plans.

I'm thinking I'm going to throw a party this year.  "Babes and Bowties" or something like that.  Everyone can dress up, and you must bring your favorite bottle of wine for tasting.  Guess I should start planning that.

Sadly we haven't had a big V-day because we always have DH's daughter and it's his birthday.  Last year I cooked family dinner and I think we were in bed by 10ish.  This year with it being on a Monday and a school night and having his daughter the weekend of also we probably won't do anything again.  I try to come up with stuff but I wish just one year he would surprise me and plan something!

so this may have been an anniversary date instead, but its still my favorite - FI planned an indoor picnic for us (it was freezing out), got a fire going, laid a blanekt on the floor, and brought in the food we had on our first date.  super cheap since it was a local pizzeria, but still one of my favorite memories

mseale- ooh thats sounds fun! We should just all come to your house! :)

I'm just lost on ideas this year. Here's what I've done in the past:

    1. I've done an at home romantic picnic in front of the fireplace.
    2. We went to couples cooking at Central market last year.
    3. Capital Grill for dinner then Paciugos for dessert
    4. DSO concert and Primo's

The only thing I could think of is borrowing a projector from my work and setting up a movie theater in our bedroom (since I refuse to have a TV in the bedroom). Complete with popcorn, candy and ice cream. I'm not sure what movies to play or anything and I'm sure setup may be a pain. What do ya'll think?

I'm with Michelle on this one...our valentines days seem to never work out very well.

1st year we had it together we spent the night in the ER because FI was struck in a hockey game and his chest bones were all strained...how romantic of an evening that was.

2nd year, he had a hockey game again the day of...so we planned out "date" on a different night, I ended up getting really sick....and we had to cancel plans and never remade them.

3rd year, we were supposed to go to a really nice dinner to make up for the previous two years. Instead, we stayed at the emergency vet because our new puppy...decided to ingest matches, a light bulb and a few other non-food items...

*sigh* i just want to have him to myself this year, and maybe watch a movie. Nothing too eventful.

I know that last Valentine's Day was bad about getting a reservation because the NBA All Star game was that weekend too.  I don't think we'll do anything this year on the night of because all the nicer restaurants have special meals.  It sucks because I don't want their special meal--I want to eat off their regular menu.

And the last few years he's had a game ONE valentines day, i'm not sure i can handle it being on that day this year...i might go bazerk lol

DH isn't much into Valentines Day and thinks it is dumb so we don't do much.  I have decided, however, that we should go out for Italian every year, or even make it at home because that is what we did for our first Valentines Day.  He seemed okay with that.

Our first Valentine's was in 2006, and I can't remember what we did!
2007 - Courts fell asleep early that night se we didn't end up doing anything.
2008 - Dinner at Hannah's in Denton, then maybe coffee at Jupiter House?
2009 - This was our most memorable. We spent the whole day together - breakfast at Cups 'n' Crepes. That afternoon/evening we went to Stonebriar and did dinner, a movie, and froyo.
2010 - I was still in Nashville, so we didn't do anything.

This year we'll probably go out to dinner, maybe get a hotel room. I'm not sure, we haven't really talked about it yet.

This is our 2nd Valentine's together as we had just met right after Valentine's Day 2009.

Last year, we actually got engaged on Valentine's Day weekend. We went to our favorite restaurant Al Biernat's and had a wonderful dinner. I was totally sick that weekend but I sucked up and went and got my hair done and tried to be a good sport. :)

This year, it looks like Siavash will be on a 2 week business/training trip for his new job, so my plan is to fly up there the weekened of Valentine's Day. I want him to plan it but it's already getting the best of me and I am already researching restaurants / things to do there... :)

For the past couple of years we did the Valentines day dinner/movie at the Studio Movie Grill.  It could've been better...but since it was the first two years they had done it, there were still some things that needed to be smoothed out.  But I really enjoyed it!  I don't even know if they are going to do it again this year though.

My FI is resistant to anything Valentine's Day related.  He thinks it's dumb and refuses to particpate...(other than getting his mom chocolates and/or roses, since his dad passed several years ago).

Our first V-Day together (2008) - we hadn't been dating long, and I talked him into going to a independent film premiere (a friend had extra tickets) so we went, and it was a horrible and bizarre slasher/horror flick... funny stuff.

In 2009, V-Day was on a Saturday, so he got me flowers for Friday the 13th :)
In 2010, I was at Army Basic Training... I sent him a card, and he actually
acknowledged V-Day in a letter to me.

This year - doubt we'll do anything.

I love valentine's day. I usually like to reverse the roles and be the one to plan a surprise. Usually it is something simple, but 2 yrs ago I planned a whole day. I first booked a couples massage. Then we had dinner at maggianos early to avoid the crowds. Then I booked a room at the adolphus. He was really surprised.

But, we always do our valentine's day on a different day than the 14th. The restaurants are always to packed and you get bad services because of all the people. That the servers fault at all.

This year we are not doing anything because the following week we are going to Jackson Hole for a week to ski/snowboard. So we are just going to the Blackhawks/stars game that friday. Yay. Its our favorite team and we have lower level seats.

But, the fellow girls with hockey players I understand. My DH was on 2 teams last year.

Bellagrace -  We will be in Breckenridge skiing the following day this year too!  Have fun!
  • edited December 2011
Oooh, I want to go skiing!

So whats with men and thinking that V-Day is stupid!? Is it the hype of have to buy a $50 bouquet of roses or that everyone is doing it?

We don't normally celebrate it on V-day if we plan to go out. It is always crazy. I just like doing something Extra-Romantic for the occasion.

Bella - We'll be at that game too!  DH is from Chicago and a huge BH fan.  We go every year.  He wears his BH's sweater, and I wear his Stars sweater.  This year, I'm planning on taking a sign. Not sure exactly what it will say yet, but something to the effect of "Sleeping on the sofa" with an arrow pointing to him.

BBF - He is in a Starscenter leage, but plays I & D leagues.

This is actually our first Valentines PHYSICALLY together. FI gets home Friday, the 11th and we have two whole weeks together. He requested leave to spend that holiday with me.

We are spending Sunday night at the Magnolia (our venue) and having a night of dinner and drinks downtown. Monday for our actual v-day date, we are getting pizza and watching movies in bed with the dogs.

Last year, DH proposed the Thursday before V-Day, with roses and candles and all that romantic stuff... but normally we don't do anything that special.  He does get me flowers though, and I loooove fresh flowers.  One year, he was doing a remodel at a flower shop, and he came home with a TON of flowers, just wrapped in paper to protect them... and then I got to arrange them all throughout the house, which I love doing.  I loved that he remembered that I like doing that :)

DH is from Wisconsin, but dad/grandfather are from Chicago. He is a huge fan. He last was really close at flying to watch a playoff game. I grew up in west tx, so I am a big football fan. But, I have learned to love hockey. This year, he actually bought me a hockey jersey. During Christmas, we went to the blackhawks/detroit game, which was great.
