Getting in Shape

Need to fit into my dream gown

My dream gown does not look good on a pear-shaped body like me! What to do? I need to trim my hips and stomach area.

Re: Need to fit into my dream gown

  • Do you typically lose weight just around your hips and stomach?  I know everyone is very different, but I tend to drop my weight proportionally.  I can become slimmer, but I will maitain the same shape.

I would set a timeline till you need to buy a dress and try to do all your weightloss before then.  I am sure that you will look beautiful on your wedding day!

  • I would say that if your "dream" dress doesn't fit your body type, then it really isn't your dream dress. Go shopping to find one that looks amazing on you given your body type!! Don't try to force your body into a dress it won't look good in. You don't want to look at your wedding photos and think "man I looked aweful in that dress"

This times a million. I'm not saying to forgo getting healthier or don't try on your dream dress style, but have you ever watched Say Yes to the Dress? You know the girls who are in love with a not so flattering on them style and then follow the consulant's advice and try on a super flattering on them style? I'd say try on more than one dress style. :-)

Ditto this.  That's the thing about wedding dresses.  The ones you like to look at in magazines are rarely the ones that look good on you.

Have an open mind and try on all sorts of styles.  You will find a dress that makes your body look beautiful, it just might not be the one that you expect!

Your dress should fit you, not you fitting into your dress. You can't change your body shape, but you can try to slim down, which might make your dream dress look a bit better.

A mixture of good cardio and strenght training will help you burn excess fat and build muscle (not bulk up) which could help that dress look more flattering on a slimmer body. But as others have suggested, make sure that the cut of the dress is flattering to you as well.
  • Try to maybe find a dress similar to your "dream dress"  but that fits your body better.

  • I agree with the PP's.  If your dream dress doesn't look right on you, then it's not your dream dress.  Your dream dress should make you look and feel amazing, not feel like you should be smaller.

There are thousands of dresses out there for you to try on.  Don't get caught on one because you liked the way it looked in a magazine!

Also, to address your original question, strength training and cardio and a clean diet are the only way to do it.  You can't target where you lose weight, so you just have to get in to a healthy lifestyle and enjoy the results as they come.  Remember that the key is cleaning up what you're eating an addition to the exercise, and do NOT neglect strength training.  The average woman doesn't get "bulky", the necessary muscle structure and hormones simply aren't in us.  All strength training will do is tone you up, slim you down and give you lots of lovely muscles that burn a ton more calories even at rest than fat does.

Summarily, while I encourage your decision to persue a healthier lifestyle, don't do it for one specific dress.  Do it for yourself.  You'll look and feel fabulous and you WILL find the right dress for your body.
