Plateaus

When your body gets stuck at a weight that is few pounds more than what you'd like to see on the scale, what do you do to bust through that plateau?

Switch up something you are doing. Eat more for a day, change what youre eating entirely, do a new type of workout/increase your intensity. If you switch it up, it will jump start your system again.
  • I would also ask yourself if the number on the scale matters (since you say you are within a few pounds of where you want to be).  Consider other metrics such as how your clothes fit, your measurements, and your body fat percentage.  If after considering those things you still want to be smaller, follow Neeb's advice, but if you have been exercising all along, you might be plenty small (because of the density of muscle) even though the number is a bit higher than you think is ideal.
  • Sometimes taking a few rest days helps also. I know I can get stuck if I've been working hard for several weeks and only take a day off here & there.
The big thing is change, you have to get your body out of the rut.

  • IIm in the same boat. I recently hit a major platuea and Ive been very frustrated. the only thing that I found help is to try group classes at the gym. I find that when Im working out by myself, I do the same cardio and weight training I do at every workout. Group classes will make a workout more fun and might be more cardio than you're used to, and it will most likely work different muscle groups than you've been focusing on.
