switching birth control?

I figured this was as good a board as any to post this question.
I got the mirana iud in December. I am getting married in August. I can not take the freakin hip pain/cramps/every thing else this this is doing to me anymore!! I want to get it taken out but I dont want to get pregnant before the wedding. So i was thinking of getting this thing taken out like next week and then switching to the pill. (or something else?? any suggestions?) The thing is we are planning on trying to concive at the end of the year. So i would only be on the pill for like half a year or so. Is that stupid? i dont trust condoms alone *we have a one year old*.
So whats your take. I cant take the freakin mirana anymore! My hips hurt so bad today it feel like i cant walk.

Re: switching birth control?

  • Have you talked to your gyno about this problem? I would consult them before making any decisions, particularly because the mirena is expensive to get extracted.

<div>I havent, im going in next week. Its all covered by my insurance tho</div>
  • Ah, well that's good at least. I have the mirena and love it but I know not all BC works the same for everyone.

If you do end up getting it taken out, you should inquire about the NuvaRing - I also liked that a lot.

  • Sounds like something to talk to your doctor about.
  • If you have any acne problems, I would highly suggest talking to your dermatologist as well.  Mine told me not to switch or go off my birth control before the wedding, at the risk of having major breakouts!
  • Im on the Depo shot, you get the shot every 3 months. I have had no issues. You will have some spotting during the time between the first and 2nd shots and then nothing after. no period at all, no cramps or anything!! I've been on it for a little over 2 years and dont have anything to complain about! Might be an option to discuss with your dr!
  • As a labor and delivery nurse, PLEASE talk to your gyno about this. So many women think asking their friends or other women is sufficient enough advice. Well, it isn't. It's how most women wind up pregnant...

That being said, pills are dependable only if taken around the same time every day. They take about 2 weeks to be fully effective. Meaning: if you start the pill, either don't have sex for two weeks or use another form of birth control along with it.

From personal experience, I too, have mirena. I'm sorry to hear you're having such an issue with it. I have had no issues with mine and it is hands down the best birth control I have ever been on. I agree with entropicbeauty. I was also on nuvaring at one point in time and next to mirena, it was the best.

  • I use the evra patch, and I love it. I wasn't good at remembering to take the pill every day, so switching my patch once a week is a better method for me. You can put it anywhere except your breasts, I like to switch between my outer thighs because it doesn't catch on clothing as much the skin there doesn't seem to move/ stretch as much as your butt and it doesn't hurt to take off. On the tummy I just about cried lol. Hope you find something that works for you!

I was on depot for a few years as well and while everything you said about it is true.....you need to be careful with it....depot is known to deplete bone density....it did it to me, at 23 I had the bones of a 60 year old woman and developed osteopena (its what your bones to prior to having full blown osteoporosis!) thankfully bone density can be replenished with diet exercise and supplements and I have recovered from it. Last i heard they were taking it off the shelves (in Canada at least) because it is so bad for you.  I strongly suggest you schedule a bone density test....honestly its so bad for you

  • Every type of contraception I've heard of has people that did really well on it, and people that have had horrible side effects. One of my CWs and I are on the same pill, and her doc prescribed it because she gained weight on a different pill, and she doesn't gain on this one. Well I have gained three pounds since starting that very same pill.

Point being, this is a decision that should not be made lightly and should be between you and your ob-gyn. Good luck!

I would consult your doctor and talk about your concerns.  I know all people react differently to different types of birth control and if you are trying to conceive at the end of the year you will want to speak to them about the lasting effects some birth controls have on your cycle.  i.e. if you are on a BC that changes your cycle from 1xmonth to lets say 4xyear or never, once off that BC your cycle may take anywhere up to a year to return to normal.  When I was on depo my normal cycle didn't return for 7 months.  If a conceiving is something you are interested in right away tell your doctor.

Another thing to think about are side effects.  Some BCs depending on your body can have side effects including weight gain, which again depends on your reaction to the birth control.  I'm just throwing this in b/c you put your post on the getting in shape board so maybe this is something that would be a concern for you.

Hope this helps! Again talk to your doctors because there are so many factors regarding what type of BC would work best for you :)

it has been getting a bad rep here and there, but I have never had a problem with Yasmine.  It actually is known to help lose weight. When my OBGYN wanted to put me on it when I was twenty, I asked her if it was going to make me gain the weight I had already lost back,  She told me that it had been known to help people lose weight.  I take it for health reasons as well, and its great!  you should try it out and see.  Personally I like the pill because I can keep up with that time of the month.
  • II actually just had this talk with my doctor a few weeks ago. She suggested to do the ring, its simple and requires a smaller adjustment to your body. But always consult your doctor:)

  • I've known several people get pregnant on the NR, more so than other BC options.

PP was correct in that depo can reduce bone mass.

If you're getting married in August and waiting until the end of the year to TTC, I suggest just using condoms.  If you're ready for a baby in 6 months, I don't think the world would end if a "surprise" happened a few months early d/t condom malfunction.

    Question:

If you only got the Mirena in December, why did your dr agree to placing it if it was going to only be used for a year before TTC again?  It's for longer term BC.

<div>Love the patch too...and I agree, it kills taking it off your stomach!</div>
  • I have the paraguard, and my hips hurt quite often...Is this from the IUD?  I would talk to your doctor for sure.  I myself have been wondering if I should go back on the pill.  Since I went to non hormonal BC my skin is terrible and I don't want my skin all broken out of my wedding day, not to mention this pmdd...

I would personally avoid the depo shot.
