Strength Training

I've been getting pretty good at hitting the gym 4-5 times a week but I do mostly cardio. I don't know what to add for strenth training as I never really do it. I've been good at alternating arms and legs and adding in abs most of the time (I use the exercise ball). I'm not a huge fan of free weights but I'm don't know if its because I don't do them often. Any suggestions on a good routine? How often should I be doing them and for how long?

Re: Strength Training

  • I used to take workouts from Oxygen magazine for my strength training. I liked that one because it was geared more towards gym workouts and not home - so they have lots of resources for machines AND free weights. I'd stick with one plan for a month and then change, so my body didn't adapt,

  • Check out Muscle & Fitness Hers, they have great workout routines that I love and lots of great advice! :) I weight train more than I do cardio though, so I really enjoy the free weights. I wonder if part of your dislike stems from just not knowing what to do so you're uncomfortable with it? That's how I started off. Just go in there and play afound with the machines a little. Get familiar with how they work and just do light weights at first. Slowly your confidence will grow and you'll be able to increase your weight. Another tip: watch the people around you! I've learned some good exercises just by doing that :) good luck!!
