Stay Safe Ladies, and Hydrate!

With much of the country having extremely high temperatures I just want to remind all of you ladies who are working out outside this weekend to stay safe! Remember to hydrate, and use sports drinks! Dont forget the sunscreen! Workout in the early hours if possible. Cut your miles short if you have to. Just becareful this is dangerous stuff out there!

Solid advice. I was driving today and saw a woman running hard, with no water, at noon. It's 30 celcius here. I was like, omg... I would not want to be 3km away from home and about to pass out! I felt thirsty and lightheaded looking at her.

Water = nectar of the gods.

<div>It's all what you're used to. I almost never carry water with me when I run, even when it's that warm. I'm not saying that other people should let themselves get dehydrated, but maybe she (like me) is conditioned to run without a water bottle in warm weather.</div>
  • I saw a guy running in 105 degrees without water :/ He wasnt in the best shape either. This is not the Badwater Ultraman.

It's very possible - but I feel like most people living in Alberta shouldn't be too used to 30 degree heat, seeing as there was still snow on the ground in May. For the most part, I would just like to see someone with a water bottle when it's this hot just in case. Sometimes, you just don't know when you're going to not be able to do it. My friend who's in great shape passed out while running in the heat last summer... not a good thing!

However, I do understand that some people may very well be able to tolerate exercising in the heat without hydration. Ultimately, to each their own!

<div>Only a little off-topic, and a little AW-y: my mother has run Badwater. She was understandably worried about the heat, especially as we live in Seattle, and it almost never gets above 90 degrees F here. She trained for the heat in two ways: by wearing extra layers of clothes when she went out for her regular runs, and by running in an actual dry sauna.</div><div>
</div><div>I bet people who saw her do that those things thought she was insane! I crewed her at the race, and the heat was totally miserable (in the middle of the day, the temperature was easily 135 F). Her heat-training worked though; she ended up with a really awesome time and was one of the first female finishers that year. I wouldn't say it was a fun experience, btu I will always be glad I got to be part of it.</div>
  • That's really amazing, arwo.  I know it was probably awhile ago, but congrats to her anyway!  That's a major accomplishment.
