Getting in Shape

First Time Runner with a Question

Hey everyone.  So I finally made it on the treadmill tonight and though I did an impressive 10 minutes of running (I just started working out, the last time I worked out and was in shape was during HS for sports), my feet became tingly and numb during my workout.  My FI thinks its because I haven't worked out in so long and I'm out shape and that I also need to break in my running sneakers, where as I think it's more like the shoes just aren't fitting me the right way.  I have the Brook Adrenaline GTS 11 sneakers.  They fit great in the store, but can they be the issue?

Thanks for the help!

  • The running store I went to fitted me with the brooks.  Out of all the sneakers they recommended these were the comfiest.

  • Could you have had them tied too tight? If not, take them back to the running store and have them analyze your gait in them.

  • That could be the issue.

The general recommendation around here is that you hit up a running shoes specialty store and actually get fit for the shoes.  I did this and ended up with a pair I never would have picked on my own.  They studied my gait and the way the tilt of my feet to determine the bast pair for me.  Which happened to be a cheaper pair of Asics.
  • Hi! It sounds like they were tied too tightly. I'd try them once more on the treadmill and if they don't improve, bring them back to the running store. Most will let you exchange them after doing a few miles on a treadmill. 10 minutes is great! Good for you. If you are in Morris County, there's a beginner runners group for women that meets twice a week in Morristown.

  • This happened to me when I first started running too. It happened more so on the treadmilll or elliptical, even the bike, I think because my foot was moving, but not fully if that makes sense? It happened less when I was actually moving instead of staying in one place. I would just stop my motion for a minute, wiggle my feet, and then move to another machine or activity (if I was at the gym). Eventually it stopped. It hasn't happened since July and I've been working out more.

  • I'd try loosening up the laces a bit.  If they still do it, I'd go back to the store and let them know and see what they say.
