cakes

I need some suggestions for cake places.  I've looked into The Cake Guys, but their prices are a little high for our budget. (I'm hoping to save money on a few things so we can have a photobooth!).  Anyone know of good cakes that aren't too pricey?  Our wedding is in McKinney, so anywhere in the Dallas area or North would be best.

Thanks! And Happy New Year everyone! :-)

  • Texas Star Bakery maybe? That's the cheapest non-home baker I can remember seeing.
  • Bake Rejoice is pretty inexpensive, but definitely try her cakes first.  H and I were unimpressed.

  • Ruth Robbins with Tastefully Yours out of Southlake...her cakes (she did my wedding in October) was fantastic!!
  • Did you by chance look at the packages with the Cake Guys, or just the individual pricing? I initially ruled them out cause I just looked at the "per slice" pricing, but reconsidered after looking at the Sweet Inspirations package options.

  • Ditto what Wendi said.    The Cake Guys Sweet Inspirations packages couldn't be beat when you looked at both price and quality.  Even Ruth Robbins is $175 more for the same number of servings and although I did love her cake at the sampling, she's still just slightly not at the same level at The Cake Guys.  I don't know what it is about their cake but it's amazing.

Definitely taste the cakes before selecting a "budget" cake vendor.  We tried several and were unimpressed with nearly all of them.

  • FWIW, Tabitha is out of McKinney and her cake tasted AWESOME...even months later!

  • Thanks everyone!  I will definitely look into those places.  I looked at the cake guys packages, but they still look pretty pricey.  Over $700 for 150 people! Does Tabitha have a website? I can't find one.

FWIW on the cake guys packages, their servings are huge. We have 150 invited and are doing the package for 120. I am spending less than $500 with delivery.

  • With almost any cake package, you're safe to get less than your total expected guest count.  We used Panini Cakes, ordered a package that was close to our guest total for the bride's cake, and about two-thirds of our count for groom's cake, and we had so much left over it was tragic (except in my excitement I hadn't eaten much all night, so I just sat there and picked at the cake table when all the guests went out to send us off).

  • Ditto Ruth Robbins... she does a really nice job for a decent price. You get a Knot discount if you mention it. People loved our grooms cake the most... it was half choclate, half white cake with choclate filling. Yums. The bridal cake was white velvet with strawberry filling. I think it came out to around $540. If you need to save money simplify your design.

Just had a tasting with Tabitha Ballard and thought it was pretty tasty. She now charges $2.00 per slice for buttercream and $3.00 for fondant. She had many flavors and fillings to choose from. I also had a tasting with Radford cakery which charges $3.25 per slice and was not impressed. I still want to go try the Cake Guys and am thinking about their packages but I want my cake to look a certain way so I may go with Tabitha. My cousin had her cake done from a well known bakery in Oak Cliff called Vera's bakery. Mostly neighborhood people go there but I remember her cake being good! It was moist white cake filled with real strawberries and whip. She told me it was only $2.00 per slice and free delivery in Dallas. They are limited in flavors and fillings though if that matters to you.
