socks - no shoes?

So for the last 3 weeks I have been doing Jillian Michaels 30 day shred in my living room(total kickbutt workout). I'm on level 2 right now and with all the planks and holding myself up my feet are killing me so its hard to do the actual work out. There is a sharp shooting pain going up my foot.

I kicked off my shoes and just did it in socks and it felt a lot better. I tried putting those shoe cushions in but it didnt work. How bad is it to just work out in socks? I'm working out on a carpet but when it comes to the cardio part I go over to a solid floor.

The shoes are a couple years old but have only really been worn maybe 100 times? Any advice?

Re: socks - no shoes?

  • Do you tie them too tight? Could be an issue. (or if you have a wider foot than the shoe and your foot is a little snug) -- I've worked out barefoot before and my feet hurt more than normal the following day but that was expected. Your shoes are supposed to help support your body/legs but if it's hurting, not helping, then kick 'em off!

  • My mother and I had a similar issue to this, and it turned out that we had planters fasciitis and specific insert in our shoes (uber expensive). If it really is a recurring and painful experience I would see a doctor, before you buy anymore expensive insoles.

  • I have found that flatter shoes are much more comfortable to work out in than typical running shoes. I like Nike Free and Nike Zooms. Unless you are lifting really heavy weight and are worried about dropping it on your feet, barefoot is fine. Then again, shoes probably wouldn't do much in that situation.

There has been a move towards "minimalist" shoes/no shoes in running, and (in some ways) I really like it. There are many people who don't NEED a ton of support/cushioning for their workouts, and putting them in stiff, padded shoes just screws up their natural running stride, which can lead to injuries. If you find that barefoot is more comfortable for you, it's probably OK, but I would ease into it, so you're not overdoing too fast. I spend a couple of months in the spring building up my barefoot miles slowly, letting my feet adjust to doing more work.

With that said, there are some people that really need shoes, and if you experience foot or leg pain that seems abnormal during or after a workout, be careful! Go to a specialty shoe store that can fit you properly with workout shoes.

ETA: I should have said that if you experience pain, go see a doctor. THEN go to a shoes store.
  • When I do cardio at home I always do it barefoot.  I do my at home strength training in shoes only because I use a resistance band and it ends up putting a lot of pressure on the soles of my feet when I have it hooked around them.

As long as you don't have any huge foot issues then I'd think you'd be fine.  But, if you have recurring foot pain no matter what you do, I'd go see your doctor or a sports medicine doctor.  You may need specific inserts in those sneakers.
  • I've been doing 30DS and other workouts at home in socks for months and haven't had a problem.  It just feels more comfortable to me than in sneakers.

  • I wanted to do it with no shoes because I just felt that my sneakers were too clunky for he mountain climbers and other moves.  But I read this and kept them on.. read the comments from people too.

  • Thanks everyone. Socks are just much more comfortable but maybe I will take a look into a new pair of shoes also! You can never have too many shoes right?

  • I work out without shoes almost every morning! I turbo Jam in my living room and have had no problems!
  • How long has it been since you bought your workout shoes? If its been a while, and you workout daily your shoues just may be worn out. You could always try getting new shoes. I do Zumba in my sockfeet on carpet and don't have any problem. I guess its what your comfortable with, and how severe your pain is afterwards. Could be a sign of a more serious problem.
  • And, of course, there's the option to look into the Vibram 5-Finger shoes... it's like being barefoot but in shoe form. FI loves his and I plan on getting some after the wedding once I have money again, lol
