Spin Shoes

I am considering getting a pair of spin shoes. I spin about 3-5 times a week, so the investment would be worth it.  I never thought they were necessary until I heard a few people say they liked them. Any opinions?

Re: Spin Shoes

  • FI got some for me for Christmas and I love them. I can definitely feel a difference in my legs during spin class. They are definitely worth it if you spin that often. I've been spinning twice a week for four years and wish I bought them sooner!

  • I have to agree, I spin 4 or 5 times a week and think they really do make all the difference,  I would def invest in a pair, I wish I would have bought then sooner!
  • I think the shoes make a huge difference.  I've had my same pair for a number of years so it's definitely worth the money.  They help you pedal more in a full circle (so pushing and pulling) which works more muscles than wearing regular shoes where you're probably pushing on the pedals more and not pulling up.

  • I got shoes for spinning that have spd clips and I use them on my mountain bike inthe summer as well. Make a HUGE difference.

  • Love mine...definitely worth the money, and they last a very long time! :)
  • Can you guys recommend a brand?? Thanks!! :)
  • The cycling shoes that I use for spinning and on my road bike are Pearl Izumi.  You can find them on sale for less than $80.  I highly recommend cycling shoes if you are going to spin regularly - you get the benefit of powering through the upstroke and not just mashing down on the pedals.  I think you also get better positioning of your foot on the pedal than wearing tennis shoes in the cage.

  • Thanks! I am definitely going to get a pair. Did you buy your spin shoes online or at a bike shop...What brand did you buy?

  • I also have Pearl Izumi...not sure of the style (they're at home right now).  I'd recommend going to a bike shop.  I was intimidated to go, but they were very helpful and they put the cleats on it the right spot (something that is recommended to do in person) :)
  • Ditto GBroc.  Go to a bike shop.  They can help you find the right shoe, and help you with the cleats.

I have mountain biking shoes (they look a little like hiking shoes) rather than road shoes, because they're easier to walk in with the cleats on.

I have Pearl Izumi as well, and I've got a coworker who has Shimano, though for actual biking rather than spinning.

  • Hi!
I'm a spin instructor and I could not imagine doing spin without cleats. I wear Shimanos and I got them at my local bike shop. As PPs have said they help you and maintain strength and power so then when your bringing the pedal up your still in control and there is no power lost, and no jolting on the down pedal.

  • I looove my spin shoes! I went to a bike store and had the sales rep help me pick some out. I don't have them at the office but when I get home I'll tell you the brand!
  • thanks again everyone!
  • You might want to check out nashbar.com  They typically have shoes for a good deal.  You will have to get cleats put on and for that you can go to the bike store.

If you really like spin you might want to consider getting regular road bike shoes.  This way if you decide to start riding your bike, you can get clipless pedals for it and your shoes will work for both spin class and the bike.

  • Defintely get them!  They will help you spin SO much better!  I have knees problems, and even thoug spin is a good option for bad knees, mine still hurt.  Then I got spin shoes and they made them better.  Defintely go to your local bike shop, and make sure they put the clips in for you, where they need to be for your foot.  Also, buy some extra screws just in case!
