weight loss help!

My wedding is a year from this August and I want to loose about 30 pounds. I go to the gym 2 or 3 times a week, I work a 8:30-5 full time job and work a retail job during weekends so I try and go as much as possible. usually at the gym I do cardo for 30-40 minutes then I do some machines to work on tonning my arms and shoulders.

I think I eat decent I do have the bad habbit of not eating breakfast but when I eat it is cereal or oatmeal. Lunch is a sandwich and fruits and veggies and some snack such as gold fish, pudding, or cheeze its. My dinner is pretty good I have a home cooked meal every night mayb 2 times a month I eat out. I drink water throughout the day but start my day with coffee with skim milk and a little sugar. Occasionally I do have some juiice. I feel like I am at a peak with my weight and I am having trouble loosing more. Does any body see any ways I can change some things with what I am doing by seeing the info I provided about my eating and gym habbits.

Re: weight loss help!

  • Well, adding an extra day or two of exercise will certainly help.  Two to three is okay for maintenance, but not great for weight loss.  Also, breakfast is really a must.
Your snacks need to have more protein and less empty carbs/calories.  What does homemade dinner consist of?

Also- lose= opposite of win, loose - not tight.  Just a helpful tip :)

  • One thing that I've found really helpful is the MyFitnessPal app.  I thought I was eating reasonably healthy and that adding exercise would be all I really needed to do.  Then I got the app and realized how easy it is to overeat!!  It's really neat because it allows you to scan barcodes of what you eat and create recipes for any homemade meals.  You tell it how much weight you want to lose per week, then it calculates how many calories you should each day to meet that goal based on your current height and weight.  Any exercise you do raises the calorie limit, so it's a nice incentive to exercise too!

<div>Then you are not eating decently. Breakfast is SO important.  I feel it really gets your body revved up for the day by kicking it out of sleep/repair mode and into burn mode.  Even if you just grab a chunk of cheese, please eat something in the morning.</div><div>
</div><div>Then, like the other ladies said, start tracking you calorie intake.  Start right now.  Hop onto a free site like SparkPeople or MyFitnessPal and log everything you eat for a week.  No cheating.  Everything.  Every cup of juice, every handful of goldfish crackers.. everything.  Then come on back in 5 days and we can help you analyze the results.</div>

I TOTALLY agree with this. I'm a big snacker, and putting it all in MFP made me realize those snacks weren't as harmless as I thought. Even a little juice box is 60 calories. They're so small I can easily drink like 4 of them in a sitting if I wanted to. That's an extra 240 calories I'm not even thinking about! So tracking is really important to get an idea of what you're REALLY eating every day.

  • Can you go to the gym in the morning before work? That's what I do. My afternoons are usually shot so it's the only way I can get good gym time in. Even if you do this only once a week, this will at least put you up to going to the gym 3-4 times a week.

Like PPs mentioned. Start calorie tracking. If you think you're eating healthy, you're probably not. I thought I was eating "fairly healthy" then I started tracking my calories and could not believe how much I was over eating. Try to eat as clean as possible, avoid processed sugars and refined carbs. Good luck!

I've got a bit of a different take. It worked, and it worked pretty fast. Forget calories in, calories out. The President of Weight Watchers claimed that calorie counting "has become unhelpful". The book “Good Calories, Bad Calories” really goes into depth on this.

Try cutting these three things: vegetable oils (use olive or coconut oil instead), grains and refined sugar. It is not easy, and also I've not seen it not work yet. With this method, I've seen a guy on statins for his cholesterol be able to completely go off them within a year. Levels in his bloodwork are terrific now across the board. Oh, and he also lost weight. The aforementioned Bad 3 cause inflammation, which causes weight gain (http://www.healthiertalk.com/surprising-connection-between-weight-gain-and-inflammation-4456) Take antiinflammatories like Omega 3; eat fish.

Get your protein. You're really going to need that. As far as meat goes, try to do grass fed.
Eggs, free range. We also need to think beyond how we can only have certain foods at certain meal times. There's no rule that says eggs can only be eaten at breakfast, and chicken can never be eaten at breakfast, for example. Our ancestors certainly didn't eat that way.

We don't need as many carbs as recommended by the government. Unless you're training for endurance competition- I'm talking triathletes, marathoners, etc.- you don't need as many as you think you do. When you really feel like you need carbs, do sweet potatoes. There's your carbs without the inflammation that grains can cause (there really is something to the large number of gluten intolerant people). Switch up your workouts every few weeks so your body doesn't catch on and get too used to what you're doing.

If you find yourself tiring at first on workouts, don't worry. That's just your body adjusting to the withdrawal, particularly with the sugar. This will pass. A lot of us are addicted to the stuff. We just don't treat it like other addictions because refined sugar and grains are so, well, engrained in our culture.

I know this goes against the grain and everything we've been told. I eat plenty of saturated fat. That's not the enemy . If you're open to suggestions, just try cutting the aforementioned three things, and eat as much as you want of the good stuff (though if you're loading up on protein, you'll find you're not as hungry) as you want. Can't hurt to try it for a month and see what happens. Me, I basically just watched the weight fall off, and hadn't even increased my activity level beyond 3x a week (high intensity) workouts.

And make sure you get enough sleep at night. There are significant links between not getting enough sleep and weight gain.

More info can be found if you google primal or paleo diets (one includes dairy, the other does not- only by experimentation can you determine whether cutting dairy makes a difference for your weight loss goals). I did reintroduce yogurt, as I found the probiotics in it helpful and the weight stayed off.

If you go this route and try it a month, let us know the results on the weight loss. All the best to you. You can do it!
  • So I bought this ebook when I was trying to lose weight for my wedding and it gave me a lot of great tips.  I always found if I didnt have a VERY specific plan to follow, I'd go off track.  Just a tip :)
