Getting in Shape

I'm not sweating

For the past month I've been doing:
45 Minutes on the treadmill starting at #2 incline at 2.9 speed working up to #11 incline at 3.6 speed (any faster or running is killing my knees, which makes me want to stop)
I then do free weights, and leg and arm machines for another 30-45 minutes.  I'm drinking about 6 bottles of water a day (no soda and cut out my hot tea with splenda)  Cut out white breads and pasta as well as cheese.

I've lost 6 pounds which I'm happy about.  But I'm not sweating nor am I sore, which is making me feel like I'm not doing anything :(

Am I crazy?

Re: I'm not sweating

  • Unless you're experiencing any kind of negative effect from not sweating excessively (overheating), I wouldn't worry too much.  I'd say 6 pounds lost certainly sounds like you're doing something right.  Congrats!
  • I wouldn't worry about not sweating. You are working out in a climate controlled environment, and sweating isn't really necessary for a good workout.

I might be a little more worried about never being sore. If I were you I would either a) do the weights before cardio or b) do weights and cardio on different days so that you are fresh when you lift. That way you can really push yourself and build your stregnth.
  • Thank you ladies!

I think I will try the different days and see what happens.

  • First off, Congrats on your weight loss!

    But, you should be sweating.

You need to find a type of cardio that you can really push yourself,  With bad knees, the treadmill might not be the best tool.  Try a stationary bike,  and really push it.

I like to use the "Talk" Test.  If you can carry on a conversation while working out,  you are not working hard enough.

Also with the machines,  Try a circuit,  which is 3-5 or more exercises back to back with no rest in between and alternat upper body, then lower body.  Aim for 30 seconds at each machine.

Example,  Do rows for the back, then once you finish 30 seconds there, go straight to a leg machine,  then right to chest press or overhead press,  then back to a different leg machine.  Again,  here you NEED to bring up the intensity.

The main mistake I find working with clients is that they are not pushing themselves hard enough.  if it seems too easy,  it probably is!

Good Luck with the workout, and your wedding!

  • i had that problem ... i was running on the treadmill at a steady 5.0 speed ... and it takes me at least 10-15 mins to start breaking a sweat .... fi then suggested maybe i dont wear a tank and shorts .... maybe pants and a long sleeved shirt ... since then ive lost double what i was losing ... i also go into the steam room at my gym for the first 5 mins to work up my body temperature as well as stretch ...

    Good Luck!
