An additional flame, and this one is a little touchy (I'm in a grouchy mood today so I am thankful for FFF as a place to vent). I flame parents who put their child on the Angel Tree and put outrageous things like gaming systems and computers. I know that that may be something that your kid wants, but I'm not made of money either. I'd rather help out a kid who wants educational toys or clothes or something that isn't electronic. I know I sound cheap/shallow/whatever, but IMO I feel like these kids are a little selfish.... /end rant

OK - I'm going to sound like I have dual personalities here...

Devil's advocate - My 3.5 year old has an itouch... don't judge. It's actually really great... she can play her games on it, watch TV shows and listen to music (which she doesn't do often). But I bought it used off a guy at work. I paid $40 for it, it's scratched up and it's an older model, but it's great.

HOWEVER, I bought that myself. I didn't ask anyone to buy it for her, nor I do I think that she needs it to survive or function. I believe that the Angel Tree should have age appropriate gifts, along with practical ones. An MP3 player for a 15 year old... sure, I can understand that. And you don't have to spend a ton of money of them either.

To extend on your rant... my grandmother does a program through her church called "Christmas Providers". The program has her adopt a whole family for Christmas. Their requirements are that you buy a gift for each child, and you provide an item for the household (dishes, towels, etc.) and Christmas turkey/ham. Every year, my grandmother calls the parents of the family that she adopts and asks what they would like... and she always buys extras (she has a heart of gold). Last year, she provided coats for the whole family, winter clothes for both children, 5 toys each from "Santa", dishes, cups, plates, blankets and towels... and their entire Christmas dinner.

Well the family she has this year... she called the mother to get their "list". My grandmother gets a form stating how many children that she has and their basic items they've requested....

The forms says there are two children in the family, but the lady listed 3 kids lists... she said "oh, the other one is my daughters friend... she just wanted to see if she could get some stuff too."... WTF. REALLY? You're asking for a hand out and now you're trying to be sneaky too?

Next, they were going through the kids wish list... which includes: Britney Spears Curious Purfume, black Nike tennis shoes, Abercrombie jeans, iTouch, bicycles for each child and gift cards. My grandmother asked if she could just get regular black shoes, or some cheaper purfume... and the lady had the nerve to say "No, you can't... they won't like it and it will go in the garbage if you do."

I.was.fuming.

I told my grandmother to get the basic requirements that the church sets forth and report them. People like that ruin it for the whole system.

I have to agree with this. If a kid wants a Wii, they want a Wii. There are some people who are in a financial situation where buying a stranger a Wii isn't that big of a deal. Just because someone is asking for charity doesn't mean that they can't ask for something fun or less neccesary than gloves, shoes, etc. Imagine the look on that kid's face when Mom is able to get them the Wii they never thought would come. Totally worth spending $199 on a stranger.

There's a difference between 15 mos. old and 3 1/2 years. And I get that some kids need music to help them sleep--I was that way. But you know what? Instead of asking for an MP3 player, why not ask for a boombox or something? If I asked a 15 mos. old baby what he wanted for Christmas, he or she could point at a lamp like Brick Tamblin from "Anchorman".

Maybe they are hoping that the mp3 player will be more useful in the long run? Again, I don't think anyone should feel obligated at all to purchase something like that for someone on the angel tree, but I guess I don't see the problem in asking. I don't know though, what would be an appropriate wish list gift for a 15 month old? I don't know that much about kids b/c I haven't spent a lot of time around them. (Sorry, I don't remember that part of anchorman, so I missed the reference!)

Am I wrong or is the Angel Tree for those that really cannot afford to buy their children any Christmas gifts? I agree that the gifts should cover neccessities - clothes, jackets, etc. I also agree that it's nice to throw in one or two "wants". I don't think the entire list should be "wants" (iPod, Wii, etc.). I also don't think neccessities should be designer clothes, etc.

Brianna - the whole situation your grandma is experiencing is ridiculous. That program is set up for people who otherwise would not have any gifts at all. You don't add non-relatives to "see what they would get". And you sure as hell don't say you will throw it away if it's not what you want. Really? Could that make any less sense?

I always do the Angel tree and I usually try to pick older kids. They usually get left out because of age. But, when we did go pick an angel this year there was one for a 2 year old who wanted a xbox. There are always going to be people who take advantage of things, but I always hope thats is only a few.

Leslie,
Actually, my dad's dialysis center has been on an Angel Tree in the past. He got socks and some other little stuff one year. We were baffled because we certainly are not in need.

I agree on the need/want thing. In the past, we have gotten each person their need and their want and then get some other stuff if we haven't spent too much. I guess my problem is more with the age appropriateness of it. Since we get so many Angels and we have so much to buy, I would not buy a Wii for one of my Angels but then I also wouldn't pick them.

Soapbox moment here....
Ladies,
If you are thinking about doing an Angel and have the means, please consider one of the teenagers. They are certainly overlooked during this time because they don't have a Leap Pad or like Spiderman toys. The Salvation Army's last day is Dec. 8th.
Stepping down now....

Julie - I didn't know that places like dyalisis centers could sign up, that's cool though, a lot of people there could probably use some help.

ITA on the teenagers. They are such a forgotten population when it comes to charities. Everyone wants to help a baby or a child, but teenagers languish on the list.

[QUOTE]I would like to ask that everyone give N&M a chance. She realized she was in the wrong with the way she come off on the political FFF post and she's trying to watch how she comes off now. I was really impressed she didn't come back really defensive and try to make us look like the bad guys when she got called out. & yea, she was on our side with that crazy girl.

Nutshell:

There was a girl who was 18 (but would TOTALLY be 19.5 when married...lol) who came on here asking advice about dealing with family and finances for their wedding. She said the Lord had spoken to her and her fiance and that they were to get married on June 25, 2011, later in the post it was July 25th. She was naive and almost so clueless it was hard to believe she was real.

There was just A LOT wrong with the post that people didn't agree with. She got increasingly testy in her responses and Brianna had to lay the smack down on her, so she is gone.

I flame Tiffany. How dare she not log in on her day off to participate in FFF. ;)

My photographer posted 10 new wedding pics to FB and I want to share them with you guys but don't think 10 pics warrant a full AW post. :)

HOPEFULLY there will be a disc in my mailbox when I get home today and I will be able to AW the whole lot this weekend. If not I flame myself for telling my photographer "oh no, don't worry about it" when she said she would bring them to my office on Monday and I also flame the USPS for being so damn slow.

LOL - thanks. :)

Testy wouldn't even be the word... down-right nasty is more like it lol. The way that she acted just solidified everyone's assumption that she was on the immature side of "adulthood".

She even said "whatever" to all of us. She sure did get us there.

gah, i'm flaming tk for not letting my post show up the first time!

brianna, i can't believe what your poor grandmother is going through - way to be rewarded for doing a kind deed! it makes me so angry that people would have that reaction. i get that you only want the best for your kids, but maybe its putting into perspective what 'best' is? maybe this year its having a table full of food, clothes on your back, and a roof over your head rather than brittney spears perfume?

and to restore a little faith in humaity - as part of my job, i'm responsbile for awarding sweepstakes prizes. one of our winners recieved a $400 gift card, but because he felt he and his wife didn't need the money, he passed it along the a single mother with 3 children. i got a little choked up at work when i heard that!
