What exactly is it?

So my MOH called me awhile ago and we decided not to have a bridal shower, because neither of us really had any idea what the purpose of it was, what happened at one, and she's going to organize a bachelorette party and we figured that was good enough.

Today I learned that my FI's grandma has been talking about my bridal shower and is asking around wondering if anyone is planning one, and if not, she will probably end up hosting one for me...

So my question is simple. What is a bridal shower? What is its purpose? What do people do at these parties? Who is invited?  I know nothing about it, and although I love my FI's grandma, if I decide I don't like the idea of a shower, can I decline if she wants to throw me a shower?

    Also, to add, it wouldn't be up to you whether or not you get one. It's meant to be a gift, and if you asked for one, it would kind of defeat the purpose and make you look super gifty-grabby and spoilt.

    I'm sorry, I don't have an answer to the question, but I do have an additional question!!  In response to LittleMissCutiePie's answer... so I'm NOT supposed to ask about a bridal shower then, just hope that someone plans to throw one for me?  No one has mentioned anything, and I don't want to be greedy by asking, but I do want to know. Thanks!
