Iberia Airlines?

I am looking for honeymoon flights and hotels and noticed that Iberia is the cheapest option (by $500).  Does anyone have experience with them?  We are going to Italy.  I read some reviews online, but they are mostly foreigners that don't do English well.  I'll also post on the HM board, but wanted to ask the locals first.

I've never done Iberia.  Are they part of the British-Airways/American group?  Or the United/Air Canada/Lufthansa group?

We did one time to India.. Granted once you are on Air India nothing seems bad so I didn't see any difference between them and any of the other major airlines.

I think they are part of the American Group, but don't connect using anything but American Eagle from Chicago or Miami.

I just want us to get to Rome with clothes to wear.

Having traveled with both groups, I would prefer the American group.  They seem to have a little more room in coach and the food was better!  Every time I've gone to Europe, I have made it with my luggage, no matter the carrier.

I flew Iberia when I was in Europe this spring, and I thought the airline was no different than a Southwest or AirTran.  You have to keep in mind that Europe isn't dominated by large national carriers like the US.  They have several small carriers, like EasyJet, Ryanair, Iberia, Czech Airlines, etc.  On a side note, Iberia just became "One World" partners with American Airlines.

In terms of loosing your luggage, you run the same risk whether it's a large or small carrier.  The real question is the number of layovers you have.  Make sure when you check your bags the attendant knows your FINAL destination.  Often airlines will tag bags with "transfer" signs that alert the crew it needs to be routed to another flight.
