Premarital Counseling

Is anyone else doing this? We just started this week and I was wondering if any of you are doing the same.

We were required by our church to do Pre Cana, "God's Plan for a Joy Filled Marriage," and the FOCCUS inventory.

They were pretty time-consuming, but I'm glad we did them because it really got us to talk about things that wouldn't normally come up in everyday conversation.  I noticed a really positive change in FI's communication once we completed FOCCUS.

I totally agree with k8888. We had to do the same things and I'm so glad we were "forced" to do them. The FOCCUS questionnaire brought up stuff we had never discussed before and our discussions following Pre Cana were incredibly interesting. It was great to see that even when it came to stuff we had never discussed, we were on the same page for the most part, and for things where we had slight differences, we talked them through very well. I would highly recommend doing some sort of counseling before marriage.

We did Pre Cana like PP's mention last year. It wasn't so bad. FI and I actually enjoyed it we both thought it was going to be boring since a lot of the topics we talk about all the time.

Pre Cana is Catholic pre-marital counseling. It's a required program, rather than an elective program, if you want to be married in a Catholic church. Some of the programs are regimented and you have to go for many consecutive weeks. Ours was not like that - we just met with this guy (who wasn't a priest) on one Saturday in March and went over a questionniare (the "FOCCUS" questionnaire) which we had completed prior to our session. The only religious aspect of it was when we discussed families and raising our kids Catholic. Otherwise, it was mostly just a regular counseling session where we discussed communication issues and grievances and talked about things we had never discussed (how long would we wait before having children, what would I do with my career when we did, would I work part-time, etc.).

I know my guy does non-Catholic counseling too, so I think that's why mine wasn't quite as religious.

Thanks! Our pastor recommended premarital counseling but didn't require it. We decided to do it anyways and he gave us some material I just started yesterday. I had no idea it would make me so emotional!

We did it, but then we felt like the pastor was judging FI's past and our relationship, so we stopped.  I thinkI would've liked it better if we had maybe done it with someone else
