It’s all about the amount of time that it takes to do it. Doing an updo on a bride requires more perfection than a bridesmaid because you know that it will be looked at all day & be under more pressure from you running around & dancing. It has to hold up perfectly. So that takes more time & effort than an updo that a salon might do for someone’s party or for pictures. Time = money.
In addition, most of the time, the bridal hair is more complicated or not intricate than the others. Not always, of course.

This, in addition a bridal updo often requires headpiece and veil placement which is an art in itself.
In addition to getting the hair perfect and placing the headpieces perfectly, there is usually some sort of consultation prior to the big day, and usually that fee is rolled into the total updo price. Its like a fitting, but for your head. They want to make sure what you want is what they can do and they need to know how long it will take. You don't want to run late because you didn't know how long your updo would take!

<div>Exactly this. I thought my hair would take about an hour... tops. It will take 2.5 hours. No lie. Plus, we figured out what to do/not do on the day of and I am comfortable with the girl that's going to do it. You kind of get what you pay for, though you can find good deals. Just takes time usually.</div>
Mine cost $20. I went to a beauty school. My trial cost the same but it took twice as long because the girl had no diea what she was doing... The guy who did my hair on the day of my wedding was much more "up-do oriented" and was fantastic to work with. I wore braids and loved what he did with my hair. The school also took on about nine other people from my family and wedding party and everyone loved the experience. My sister got herself and her three daughters hair done for a fraction of what it would have cost at a "real" salon. Just another perspective. I'm not very picky about my hair and totally see everyone else's points about why bridal hair costs more and I do agree to some extent. Just don't feel like it has to cost hundreds of dollars or something but that if it does, there might very well be a good reason for that too. Especially if they're travelling to you or adjusting their business hours to accomodate you.
My hair took 2.5 hours on the wedding day, partly because she had to start over. We had allotted plenty of time, and I was GLAD she started over because whatever she was doing back there, she said went much smoother the second time.
All of the bridesmaids took an hour tops. She didn't have nearly as much perfection-tendencies with them (even though they looked great). I thought it was kind of ripoff-ish before the wedding, but having gone through it, I totally get it.
I have had two trials so far....one could not curl, the other did something freaky in the front but curled well. I had two airbrush makeup trials and one went nuts with glitter eye makeup and the other made me look like a corpse.
I am doing my own makeup and thinking of straightening my own hair.....it is totally unbelievable at how much people charge. I have spend $500 just on trials so far!
