Natural Nails? tacky?

Re: Natural Nails? tacky?

  • I like fake nails, but natural nails can look really nice too.  And having everyone do each other's nails the night before would be a fun, calming experience!  I think it really just depends on what feels best for you.

  • Not at all!  If you have nice nails, go for it.  Never a good idea to spend money you don't need to spend.  And some people get fake nails that look super tacky anyhow.  Rock what you got :)
  • I wish I had strong, long nails for my wedding day.  My nails were looking nice last summer when I started taking prenatal vitamins, but then the winter came and they got brittle again.  I've been getting manicures every 2 weeks for the last month or so to try to get my nails in shape.  They seem to break after a week or so, however, I've always had shorter nails so I'll probably just stick with natural, light polish for the wedding.  I will be having a manicure and pedicure done though because it's relaxing and fun!

  • i wish i had been blessed with nice nails.  i'm a biter, so i had no choice but to have fakes put on.  i knew i wanted ring shots, so i wanted my nails to look as nice as possible.  but if you already have gorgeous nails, why waste the money?
  • I chew my nails, its a bad habit that I have always had.  I only chew my nails when I am upset and/or nervous. So it happens a lot some days.  I have had gel nails before when I was a bridesmaid and for my grad, so I am going to have them done. They don't look tacky and I normally have a French twist put on them and they look good.

  • No! I think they look great and that's what I'm doing. I'm going to get a nice manicure beforehand though so they are filed relatively uniformed--but if you're good at that then that should be an expense you shouldn't have to be worried about!

  • I think that natural nails look classy...A spa treatment the night before would be the best! Try experimenting with differently sheer colors before hand to see what you would like to work with. I think I'm going to go with a sheer pink and I really like the idea of your Spa night at the hotel! : )
  • I too am just going with a manicure on my natural nails. I wore the acryllics for a little while years ago, because - especially when done correctly - they did look nice, the polish held, and they didn't break...

The problem for me was that after a few weeks, I was aware that something was on my fingers, and I had to have them taken off, as it just didn't feel right...and then, the damage to my nails underneath was unbelievable!!!

It took me literally months to get my nails healthy and strong with no "drilled ridges" in them. After that, I swore off...so yes - no question I'm going natural on my wedding day, with a pale pink polish and short, shaped nails...good luck!

  • I was a bridesmaid last year and we all went to get our nails done together. The MOH paid for the bride and the rest of us paid for ourselves.  However, we were not obligated to get our nails done, it was just a fun thing to do together.  And fake nails are not only tacky, but a huge waste of money! You'll look gorgeous with natural nails! : )

  • I don't think natural nails are tacky.  I'm not sure if I'm going to have my nails done or just go with plain.  I think it might be neat for my BM and me to give each other manicures the night before, a fun girl bonding thing :)
  • I love fakes just because it's the only way I can have nails, period.  I'm cursed genetically on both sides to not be able to grow nails.  I envy those who can, though, believe me.
  • I considered doing fake nails for my wedding but decided not to. I'm happy I didn't as I think they would have made me uncomfortable and I probably would have broken one since I don't usually wear them.
I think your natural nails will be perfect but I would definitely recommend getting them painted professionally. Everyone will be asking to see your ring..your hands will definitely be a focal point of your photos.
I had a Spa Day (manicures and pedicures) with my bridesmaids and a bunch of other close girl friends/family members who were clearly invited to the wedding and were in town the day before the wedding. I emailed out an invite and included the link for the pricing in the invite. I think this would make it clear to your girls that you wouldn't be footing the bill and it would be uncomfortable anyways if you paid for some people and not others.
    Hope this helps!

  • I'm in the same boat as OCPrincess ... its the only way I can have nails, period.  My natural nails are brittle, break easily, and break far down my nail,. making it both unsightly and very painful.  I tried everything, but finally gave up - I have an acrylic overlay. I keep them on the shorter side, myself, because my job is sometimes kind of tough on my hands.

However, even if some people think my nails look "fake" or "tacky" .... I think that they look better than brittle, uneven, broken nails and bleeding nailbeds.  But Im silly like that.  I'd kill for strong nails that I could keep at a reasonable length (even a quarter of an inch!), but its not in the cards for me.

For you - don't get acrylics or gels or whatever if you think you have to.  Do what is going to make you comfortable and happy on your wedding day.  Maybe treat yourself to a mani that includes an awesome hand massage - SO relaxing!
  • I have always had a nail-bitting habit (since kindergarden!!) and am TRYING to grow them long (going great so far!) - so I am going to get a manacure but I don't want any color - just a clear coat.  I don't like painted nails.

I like how they shape the nails and clean the cuticles and all. The woman told me to pick a color, and looked at me like I had 5 heads when I said I didn't want one!

Natural nails are fine, I think, and having someone clean them up is a nice thing to do to pamper yourself.

  • I think it would be a really cute idea to do eachother's nails while you're all getting ready together. Natural nails are not tacky at all.

A cute and inexpensive idea would be to get a little mini manicure set for each of your bridesmaids so you all have matching nails and they also get a little gift.

E.L.F. has  great little sets for $2 to $5 each. Much cheaper than paying to everyone a mani/pedi and they actually have something that lasts longer than a mani/pedi.

  • i kinda think that the fake ones with the white tips are way more tacky than natural - put a pretty color on those nails and maybe get a basic manicure!
  • Natural nails are definitely NOT tacky!  In my opinion, natural or lightly manicured nails look so much more graceful/delicate/beautiful than acrylic ones!  But whatever you do be YOU and do what you want! :)

  • I think you should stick with how you are most comfortable. Do you wear fake nails often? If not, then stick with natural. I am trying to decide, myself, because I am REALLY bad at keeping my natural nails nice. I either break away at them by doing my everyday stuff or chew at them when I am stressing.

  • As long as your nails are polished (and I don't mean painted but buffed) and CLEAN (Nothing worse than a bride with dirt under her nails) then I think a natural hand is much prettier and of course cheaper than the fake nail.

I personally dont want to run the risk of having dirty nails seen (We are having an outdoor DIY wedding) so I plan on getting tips with an french manicure, but they will be short and it is due to my nails being frail and brittle.
  • I like fake or natural. The key to acrylic nails not looking so tacky is to keep a short realistic length. My nails also break once they grow long. Acrylic lasts for weeks
  • In my opinion, fake nails look just that, FAKE!  I love the look of natural nails and think it is the BEST way to go to look elegant and not fake.
  • I have flimsy, thin nails... but I wouldn't even consider acrylics because they absolutely destroy my real nails. Not worth it to me.
  • Of course not!

If you don't want fake nails or a french manicure, that's your own business. Give them a coat of clear at home and that should be enough to keep your look polished and pretty without all the cost or hassle.
  • I am a total fan of mani/pedi! My friend and I go about once a month to get them done. I used to have fake nails and I think that if you go somewhere where they do a good job and do not use too much acrylic then they can look really good. As other people said they only look tacky when they are super long and hot pink with huge designs.

Just do whatever you want to do. Your hands with be shown with pictures of your ring and in some other pictures. But you will be the only one who really care what they look like. I would also think that you wouldn't have to pay for the other people unless you are requiring them to. I know that when I got to get mine we will probably book the whole place because other friends are also wanting to go even if they are not in the wedding party.

Do what ever you want it is your day! That's what I am going to do!

  • Fake nails are not tacky (period) any who....... natural is fine just get a manicure and if you wanna do french nails have the shop do it with  white polish and pink clear coat it looks just as good as the fake ones! He won't notice the nails later anyways... if you know what I mean!!!

  • I'm SO glad you asked that!  I've been wondering myself.  With everyone's advice, I'm definitely going with my natural nails!

  • I've always thought fake nails were tacky-I'm glad to see I'm not alone! I've never had them. My nails are going to be natural but I'm going to have them done because mine still look dry and yellowish when I do them myself.
  • I have a gift certificate for a free manicure and pedicure so I'm going to do that for my wedding.

However, there have been a few occasions in which I purchased DIY fake nails from Walmart.  The brand is called "Broadway" and they are very natural looking, including a natural length, and they stay on well if you apply them correctly.  They're very cheap too, maybe $6.
  • fake is tacky.  natural is beautiful.
  • I think natural nails would be pretty.  As for fake nails, I have artificial ones only because due to health reasons my nails are very brittle.  They peel and break very easily.  I dont want little stub nails for my pictures.  However, I do think some look very tacky and fake especially when they are ridiculously long with an out-there color and sparles.  To me that isn't natural.  I keep mine very short and usually a neutral shade....nothing over the top.
