Unity Candle Lighter

I am utilizing Unity candles during my ceremony, but I am having diffuclty finding an inexpensive lighter that doesn't look like a BBQ lighter. I saw some slender lighters, but the prices are a little more than I want to spend, over $20.00. Does anyone have any ideas on making a BBQ lighter look nice or know where I can find an inexpensive lighter that works?

All responses are appreciated!

Re: Unity Candle Lighter

  • Where is your ceremony at? If it's at a church, they more than likely have a candle lighter. We just used the one from our Church.

if it's not at a Church, have you tried just Googling for candle lighters or checking Amazon? Another place I might check is a craft store like Michael's.

  • Maybe you could just use tapirs?   Have them pre-lit, then set them off to the side, then use those to light the side candles.

  • Now that you mention it, I don't even know what lighters we used or where they came from.  We had our moms come up and light the taper candles, so they each needed one.  I'm sure it was probably my mom and dad's lighters because they both smoke, but we definitely didn't plan for anything fancy.  No one saw them, heck, I was right there and I didn't even notice.  I'd just say get a few Bics and you're good to go.

  • Every outdoor wedding I've attended with a unity candle, the mothers walked down the aisle with dressed up BBQ lighters and lit the tapers with that.  Even though they use white and dress them up with some foofoo, it's still very clear what they are.

Search Amazon for "candle lighter" - there are some nicer ones, though they're rather expensive  - http://www.amazon.com/Ambiance-Black-Silver-tone-Candle-Lighter/dp/B004FNNG8G/ref=sr_1_60?ie=UTF8&qid=1341591070&sr=8-60&keywords=candle+lighter

Personally, I'd see if the moms were comfortable carrying a lit candle down the aisle and I'd just pre-light that, then have them carry it down the aisle and light the family candle as soon as they get to the altar.
  • I saw this at one of the latest weddings I attended & thought it was great.  There were two lit votives on a small table at the altar, with two unlit tapers, & the unity candle in the middle. The parents lit the tapers from the votives, them blew out the tapers & laid them back on the table.  No worrying about the flame going out while you're walking down the aisle or having to find a nice lighter.  The votives can be lit just as the first guests arrive & they won't burn out before the ceremony.
  • Honestly I can't remember what we used. I think the officiant lit the votive candles with a regular lighter and our moms lit the taper candles from the votive.

  • To answer a question that was asked, it's going to be an indoor wedding at a banquet hall.

I like the idea of the votive candle, however with a 5 candle unity set, I don't want to take away from it. I ve seen those Zappo(?) lighers that I think are cute, but they are also expensive.

LOL, now that I have thought about it, at the previous weddings I've attended, I don't remember how the unity candles got lit by the parents either.
  • If it's indoor, just have a small unity candle already lit at the front near the unity candle.  When your moms go up to light the tapers, they pick up the taper, put it to the votive and voila! light.
