WPBP

Since Stina is apparently MIA, and Frogurt's on her HM:

What, if any, is the "reason" behind your wedding date? (Venue availability? Anniversary date? Conspiracy relating to the Mayan calendar?)

If somebody where to ask you for a book recommendation, what's the first book/author that would come to mind?

What's a movie that you had high hopes for, and then felt completely disappointed by after you saw it?

What's something you like to do when have "me time"?

Re: WPBP

  • What, if any, is the "reason" behind your wedding date? (Venue availability? Anniversary date? Conspiracy relating to the Mayan calendar?) Venue availability + summer break between my first and second years of law school + 30% cheaper to have it on a Friday.

If somebody where to ask you for a book recommendation, what's the first book/author that would come to mind?  Really depends on the person.  I tend to have a gift for picking out books for people, and I usually do it based on their personality and other books they've enjoyed.

What's a movie that you had high hopes for, and then felt completely disappointed by after you saw it?  Avatar--I saw it a couple months after it came out and was like, "THIS is now the highest-grossing movie of all time?"

What's something you like to do when have "me time"?  Read and look at what DH calls "travel porn" (going through brochures and websites looking for deals).

  • What, if any, is the "reason" behind your wedding date? (Venue availability? Anniversary date? Conspiracy relating to the Mayan calendar?)  Nothing in particular.  We had to do it over a school break because we have three teachers between our immediate families.

If somebody where to ask you for a book recommendation, what's the first book/author that would come to mind?  The Count of Monte Cristo.  Lately I've liked some of Gene Wilder's novellas too.  I'm going to be bothered now because there's something awesome I've read recently and can't remember for the life of me what it was.

What's a movie that you had high hopes for, and then felt completely disappointed by after you saw it?  I dunno.  I think I can usually tell when a movie's going to be so-so.  Like I love Iron Man, but I knew Iron Man 2 would be meh compared to the first.  Backwards answer - movie I was amazingly shocked that I loved was Star Trek.  I hate sci-fi but I loved that movie.

What's something you like to do when have "me time"?  Shopping for the most part.  I don't have much me time these days - I work too much.  But I'll be switching jobs soon and hopefully only working 40 hours a week at that point, so my hope will be to cook more at the least.
  • What, if any, is the "reason" behind your wedding date? (Venue availability? Anniversary date? Conspiracy relating to the Mayan calendar?)
Grandparents are apparently afraid of dying if we made the date too far away (like a year and a half) so we chose next fall, my mom is a teacher and requested that we do it before or after October since that's report card time for her, and so we chose the last weekend of September to give ourselves more time. LOL. Fortunately, all of that was far away enough that we had no problem finding a venue!

If somebody where to ask you for a book recommendation, what's the first book/author that would come to mind?
Good in Bed by Jennifer Weirner (Weiner? something like that). It's not about sex, despite the title, but it is a FABULOUS read for any girl!

What's a movie that you had high hopes for, and then felt completely disappointed by after you saw it?
License to Wed. I love wedding movies, esp right now, and I love Robin Williams, and i LOVE bad movies... but it wasn't even funny in a laughable, "I can't believe how bad this is" way. I turned it off 30 minutes in.

What's something you like to do when have "me time"?
Marathon tv shows... Law & Order: SVU, Damages, How I Met Your Mother, Gilmore Girls, West Wing... whatever I'm in the mood for, and then sit and knit while watching them. =)

  • What, if any, is the "reason" behind your wedding date? (Venue availability? Anniversary date? Conspiracy relating to the Mayan calendar?)  When we were looking at Yosemite, we wanted off-season but no snow, which left us a very narrow window in late April/early May, and we were thinking Friday would be cheaper.  On kind of a whim, I looked up Shakespeare's birthday.  April 23, which happened to be a Friday in 2010.  Done and done.  We liked the date so much that we kept it when we switched to Vegas.  It wasn't so horribly important to us that we wouldn't have changed it if necessary; we were briefly considering doing a Monday instead.

If somebody where to ask you for a book recommendation, what's the first book/author that would come to mind?
Robin McKinley.  She's my absolute favorite author, but she's still kind of obscure since she mainly does girl-power fantasy stuff.  Also, Neil Gaiman.

What's a movie that you had high hopes for, and then felt completely disappointed by after you saw it?
Watchmen.  I was positively beside myself with that damn movie, so very excited.  It wasn't awful, but it was so thoroughly "meh."  It did give me plenty of material for my conference paper on adaptations, though, and plenty to think about regarding my own very difficult adapted screenplay that I've been beating my head against for a few years now.

What's something you like to do when have "me time"?
Video games.  I feel kind of bad hogging the TV and console with 1-player games when DH is around, so I try to wait until I have some downtime to bust them out.

  • What, if any, is the "reason" behind your wedding date? (Venue availability? Anniversary date? Conspiracy relating to the Mayan calendar?)
My anniversary is New Year's Day, but even though it seems "planned" it really wasn't. We had gotten engaged March of 2008 and pushed back the wedding a few times due to financial reasons ... by July 2009, we had the money together and we were tired of waiting. Knowing we were doing a Friday night wedding (Saturdays cost too much and our families would have been ticked about a Sunday) we went to our venue and said "We want the first Friday you have available in 2010", thinking we'd get a date in March or something. Lo and behold, January 1st was available, so we took it.

If somebody where to ask you for a book recommendation, what's the first book/author that would come to mind?
I tell everybody to read Brent Weeks. And I'm telling you all now the same: go read him, give him a chance! His storylines are fantastic, he doesn't waste words, and his sense of humor is wicked.

What's a movie that you had high hopes for, and then felt completely disappointed by after you saw it?
"The Last Airbender". I'm a huge fan of the Avatar series. I wasn't thrilled when I heard NightLight Shamalamadingdong was directing, but then he kept saying in the interviews "I love the series. My kids love the series. I'm working with the writers of the series", all these things that would lead you to believe "Maybe he can do it" ... even the trailers looked good when they came out. And then he failed. Utterly.

What's something you like to do when have "me time"?
I love to curl up in my bathrobe with a blanket on the couch and watch girly movies that DH wouldn't like. On weekends when he works both Saturday and Sunday, I usually spend one of the two doing nothing but that.

My hopes for Avatar fizzled when I saw the extended trailer they showed during an early episode of Glee.  I was starting to get sort of interested about all the technology behind it, but then I saw what the script was going to be and gave it a whole-hearted "pass".  I still haven't bothered with it.

What, if any, is the "reason" behind your wedding date? (Venue availability? Anniversary date? Conspiracy relating to the Mayan calendar?)
We knew we wanted a September wedding outside.  The first Saturday was Labor day weekend and we knew most people had their own traditions for this weekend. The next was 09/11 and DH was in lower Manhattan that day.  The last weekend was the day after my brother and SIL's first anniversary so that left 09/18/2010.

If somebody where to ask you for a book recommendation, what's the first book/author that would come to mind?
The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane by Katherine Howe.  It is about a grad student working on a Salem Witch Trial thesis and discovers that there was an undiscovered witch who really was a (white) witch.  I reread it again this Halloween.

What's a movie that you had high hopes for, and then felt completely disappointed by after you saw it?
Honestly, most of them today.  I was expecting so much more from Avatar than just a rewarmed Pocahontas/Dances With Wolves story.

What's something you like to do when have "me time"?
I just did this!! DH had a guys night last night so I got to put on flannel PJs at 7:00, curl up under blankets reading until 8:00.  Then I cut a big slice of almond cake with cocoa frosting and curled up again to watch Sunset Boulevard.

  • I would say that Shamalamadingdong was a one-hit wonder, but honestly, Sixth Sense doesn't really hold up, and the twist ending doesn't really work when Fridge Logic is applied.  Between this and the fairly widespread phenomenon of people laughing when his name appeared in the Devil trailer, hopefully people will stop giving him money to write crap.

  • Since Stina is apparently MIA, and Frogurt's on her HM: Sorry....I got really behind this morning with Trixie and I had a dentist AND OBGYN appt. Yuck, right?

Oh and fun news, Trixie is making her theatrical debut tonight!

What, if any, is the "reason" behind your wedding date? (Venue availability? Anniversary date? Conspiracy relating to the Mayan calendar?) It was pretty much 2 months exactly between our two birthdays, not too hot or too cold for the weather, and there are no present opening holidays in September.

If somebody where to ask you for a book recommendation, what's the first book/author that would come to mind?Water for Elephants.

What's a movie that you had high hopes for, and then felt completely disappointed by after you saw it? Um, I'm gonna go with "She's Outta My League" because I like boy movies like that, but whoever made it had already watched every Judd Apatow movie at least 10 times and then tried to get the same product.

What's something you like to do when have "me time"? Watch movies, surf the web, clean

  • What, if any, is the "reason" behind your wedding date? (Venue availability? Anniversary date? Conspiracy relating to the Mayan calendar?) No reason, we just wanted April because it's not high wedding season and we figured the later it was the warmer it would be.

If somebody where to ask you for a book recommendation, what's the first book/author that would come to mind? Kathy Reichs, the Bones series (what the show Bones is based on)

What's a movie that you had high hopes for, and then felt completely disappointed by after you saw it? Contact with Jodie Foster a long time ago. I read the book and it was so good and the movie just seemed so fake. I hated it.

What's something you like to do when have "me time"? Read, can't you tell?

  • What, if any, is the "reason" behind your wedding date? (Venue availability? Anniversary date? Conspiracy relating to the Mayan calendar?) We wanted to have it in the summer, but we have alot of birthdays in June (including both kids) and July is usually when people go on vacation...so August it was...wanted it for a week earlier but our venue was already booked, so we took a different building for a week later :)

If somebody where to ask you for a book recommendation, what's the first book/author that would come to mind? It depends on what kind of book. I like Sherrilyn Kenyon's Dark-Hunter series, but I'm also into Harry Potter...so it depends on who's asking and for what.

What's a movie that you had high hopes for, and then felt completely disappointed by after you saw it? Despicable Me...I thought it would be funnier than it was, being it that Steve Carell played the main character and was supported by other funny people...

What's something you like to do when have "me time"? If I ever get "me time", it's usually spent catching up on TV I've missed, reading, or sleeping. I got the Kindle App for my laptop, so I've been reading Little Women again :)

What, if any, is the "reason" behind your wedding date? There wasn't really anything behind it. We wanted October for the mild weather, wanted to stay away from the 10/10/10 crowd, so we ended up with 10/23/10. We found out later that the date is actually the birthday of my H's deceased uncle for whom he was named. *Cue Twilight Zone music*

If somebody where to ask you for a book recommendation, what's the first book/author that would come to mind? Anything by Sarah Waters. She's my favorite. I just love how tenderly woven her stories are, and how historically immersive her stories are.

What's a movie that you had high hopes for, and then felt completely disappointed by after you saw it? Star Wars The Phantom Menace. I was in 7th grade when it came out. I was so pumped...only to be let down over and over again.

What's something you like to do when have "me time"? Read, craft, play Rock Band, vegetate. I'm really up for anything.

Edit: I apparently don't know what order the Star Wars movies came it. I mean Phantom Menace, not Revenge of the Sith...though equally disappointing.

The first time DH and I saw a "Devil" trailer, it was barely a month after "Airbender" came out (I can't remember what we went to see) ... and tons of people started booing. We were happy: "Yay! Other people hate him, too!".

Airbender was supposed to be a trilogy (A movie for each element Aang needs to learn) ... there hasn't been much talk about whether or not they're actually going to bother filming the next one, although, I'm guessing if they were going to, they should have started by now. I seriously hope that they just scrap the project entirely. Even if somebody competent came along to take over at this point, and the next 2 movies where fabulous, I'd still be bummed that the first movie was such a failure.

I have to say, I didn't mind the Golden Compass movie. It wasn't great, but the polar bear throwdown was one of the greatest moments in all cinematic history. The whole concept of the movie was interesting, it was moving slowly in a thrilling direction, it just needed a little more pointed delivery.

I think there have been worse kick offs to movie series. The His Dark Materials trilogy was just victim to a crap economy and a lot of stupid "That series doesn't like church! It's eeeeviiiil!" talk.

I haven't read the books, although I've heard nothing but good things about them. It's disappointing to me that they didn't roll the dice and finish the series.

I remember that! When they completely changed the end of Golden Compass, I was like "Um ... how are they going to do the rest?". The answer was: they're just not going to.

I actually did like the movie and the casting (Which casting is something I get very touchy about), and aside from the ending, I actually thought they did a good job with telling the real story ... but again, they completely changed the ending to something that just didn't fit the series! Wtf?

<div>I didn't dislike it...I was just a bit disappointed. I thought it'd be more funny. Maybe I just didn't get the humor...I'm weird like that. :)</div>
  • I hadn't read the book, but I thought that Golden Compass would have made an excellent 2-hour pilot to a TV series, but it wasn't much of a movie.  I do own it on DVD, because it was my first date with DH.
This is a neglected planning bio.
This is a belated married bio, with no reviews yet because I'm lazy.

Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. Things shouldn't have to be sugar-coated for grown-ass women. -mstar284
  • What, if any, is the "reason" behind your wedding date? It needed to be far enough after the bar exams that I wouldn't be stressed out of my mind while still giving us enough time before I start articling to have a proper honeymoon.  Our first choice was actually July 9, but our venue wasn't available that day.  Also, I thought we'd have two weeks for the HM, but turns out I start in July, not August. :(

If somebody where to ask you for a book recommendation, what's the first book/author that would come to mind?  This is hard because I have so many!  The Hunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins first comes to mind, but since so many people have already read it, I'm going to say The Demon's Lexicon trilogy (third book due out in May) by Sarah Rees Brennan.

What's a movie that you had high hopes for, and then felt completely disappointed by after you saw it?  X3 and Spider-Man 3.  The curse of the trilogy better not rear its ugly head for Dark Knight Rises!!

What's something you like to do when have "me time"? Read.  Do puzzles (I'm really into cross-sums right now!)

When I worked in the bookstore, I actually found out there were lots of parents that had beef with the books similar to the people hate Harry Potter for the "magic". They were banned in a ton of schools because of some of the religious views being preached.

Actually, while the series was great, once you get into the 3rd book, I can actually see why people cry "Blasphemy!" ... but at the same time I really don't get why people get so uppity about what fictional books say about God. I really don't think God cares what I read.

Actually, I'm pretty sure God would want me to be an educated person that accepts the fact that there are people who don't believe the same things as me. Tolerance and understanding, that whole thing.

[QUOTE]In Response to Re: WPBP : The first time DH and I saw a "Devil" trailer, it was barely a month after "Airbender" came out (I can't remember what we went to see) ... and tons of people started booing.

I'm GLAD they won't be making the other two books after the trainwreck that was that movie.  I don't know how you can take such amazing source material and decide that you want to piss all over it.  Besides from the whole racefail, he screwed with the mythology and tore the heart out of the show.  I was so exciting for the live action adaptation too. :(
