Re: WPBP

  • What, if any, is the "reason" behind your wedding date? I like September in this area and it was an open weekend.

If somebody where to ask you for a book recommendation, what's the first book/author that would come to mind? I love David Sedaris!  He is histerical and his family is so crazy and funny, it reminds me of my family growing up.

What's a movie that you had high hopes for, and then felt completely disappointed by after you saw it? l'm going to go with any Will Farrell movie besides Anchorman.

What's something you like to do when have "me time"? Read, watch Sex and the City on DVD (thank you FI!), cook, clean, and other domestic things I don't really tell people about.

Actually, while the series was great, once you get into the 3rd book, I can actually see why people cry "Blasphemy!" ... but at the same time I really don't get why people get so uppity about what fictional books say about God. I really don't think God cares what I read. Actually, I'm pretty sure God would want me to be an educated person that accepts the fact that there are people who don't believe the same things as me. I can also see that, but it's a freaking work of fiction!  People need to stop getting so uppity about fictional books that make you look at yourself a bit.  Aerin and Licia--read the books, they're quite good and the movie cut out a lot of the philosophical/religious stuff that makes them good.<div><div>
</div><div>J.K. Rowling related a story in an interview about going to FAO Schwartz at Christmas and a man coming up to her and saying, "I pray for you" with the same tone of voice you or I might use to say, "Burn in hell" and that it literally left her shaking.  She wanted to reveal her deeply-held Christian beliefs, but knew it would give away the ending so she couldn't defend herself against the anti-Christian rants.  Too bad--Harry Potter teaches all the same tenets as every major world religion; what a shame that so many people shunned what was effectively a seven-volume treatise on tolerance that was also entertaining as hell.</div></div>

[QUOTE]In Response to Re: WPBP : Ugh, I was so mad about both of these movies. Just fuming mad. I thought they had such a good setup with X2 and it was completely blown in that godawful third movie. Scott Summers died and no one cared. He's not my favorite character either, but jeez, you'd think he would get more than an "Ahhhhh! I'm being killed" moment and misty-eyed memorial stone shot 30 minutes later. And Spider-Man 3 was just a joke. I still get irritated thinking about how bad it was.

I didn't even realize that Cyclops had bit it until like twenty minutes from the end of the movie.  I was sure that if he'd actually died it would have happened with a little more fanfare.  But no, it was really that bad.  It was like they decided they wanted to have Magneto move a bridge and then filmed an entire movie around that without any regard to having an actual story.

I think Kirsten Dunst must have had a clause in her contract specifying that she get so many musical numbers.

I generally pretend those movies don't exist because the truth is just too painful.

[QUOTE]In Response to Re: WPBP : I'm GLAD they won't be making the other two books after the trainwreck that was that movie.  I don't know how you can take such amazing source material and decide that you want to piss all over it.  Besides from the whole racefail, he screwed with the mythology and tore the heart out of the show.  I was so exciting for the live action adaptation too. :(

Oh, I seriously wanted to fly to LA and punch him in the face when I read the interview where he was asked about the backlash from the fans. At one point, he was outright asked "Why did you change the pronunciation of some of the main characters names, a decision that has clearly angered the fans?", and he basically responded saying "Well, the truth is, based on the world it was set in, I feel that the series had the names wrong. I merely corrected their mistake". Hey, pretentious asshat, no. The series came first, they <strong>created</strong> those names, they <strong>created</strong> that world, therefore there is no way they were "wrong" with how the names were pronounced. You did bad. You did abominably bad. Again, go sit in your corner and think about what a horrible thing you've done!

The only decision I feel was a better one was re-casting Zuko. Yes, he would have gotten the only race "right" if he left it that way, but  the original choice was Jesse-freakin-McCartney. I probably should have known he needed to be stopped and the movie needed to be destroyed as soon as that decision was announced.

Oh believe me Meg, I hear a lot of this stuff working at a church. The awesome "Why the DaVinci Code is evil" brochures are one of my favorites to scowl at. I roll my eyes just as much as you. Apparently, in order to be the best person I can be, I should only read within the narrow allowance of literature that is in tune with the way I must live my life.

I can only read books about myself authored by myself. Oh, and The Bible. That way my mind stays pure and unadulterated by those pesky things like acceptance, tolerance, knowledge and imagination.

Exactly. I didn't walk away from the books thinking "I think I'm going to be an atheist now". My core belief system has never been altered by a novel. Even when Dan Brown made me wonder whether or not Jesus had been married, it still never changed my core beliefs, just made me realize "Hey, Jesus was a person, it's totally possible". There's nothing wrong with seeing a new perspective on something.

In Catholic school we asked why Jesus never got married since it would have been unthinkable of him not to and were shut down very quickly.  When I read the Da Vinci Code I was like, "Haha!  Vindicated!"  It doesn't mean it was true, it just meant that I wasn't the only one who raised the question, the book explores an interesting possibility, and that's the end of it.  A book that makes you think--the horror!  The horror!<div>
</div><div>To my school's credit, they did celebrate Banned Books Week and put out a special display in the library of typically-banned books and encouraged students to read them.  We also read books in class that are frequent fliers on the banned book list (Huck Finn, Brave New World, The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie) that involve very non-Catholic elements but by God taught us how to think!</div>

  • My dad was getting all up in arms about the Da Vinci Code, and I shot him down pretty quickly with, "First of all, have you even read it?  Do you have any idea why you're mad, other than that someone who also hasn't read it told you to be?  Secondly, it's fiction.  I'm pretty sure Donald Duck wasn't actually forced to serve in the Nazi military, and that Forrest Gump really didn't meet all those famous people."  I didn't have to hear any more about it after that.

I remember seeing Spider-Man 3 with BFF, her guy (can't remember what their status was at the time, I think they were still dating), and a friend of his.  She and I were just giggling and mocking the movie the whole time, and her BF was getting really irritated at us.  Until the moment where Spidey posed in front of an American flag, at which point he abandoned all hope.  Yahtzee named his Franchise Killer award the Indiana Jones in a Fridge award (don't get me started on that), but it could have just as easily been the Dancing Emo Spidey.

  • What, if any, is the "reason" behind your wedding date? (Venue availability? Anniversary date? Conspiracy relating to the Mayan calendar?)
    It was convient.

If somebody where to ask you for a book recommendation, what's the first book/author that would come to mind?
    Anything by Jodi Picoult.

What's a movie that you had high hopes for, and then felt completely disappointed by after you saw it?
127 hours.  I thought it was going to be more intense.

What's something you like to do when have "me time"?
Glass of wine and crappy television shows.
Ignorance is a poor defense. Image and video hosting by TinyPic
  • The Da Vinci Code was another one of those books that I heard an endless number of complaints about. I read it and like I said earlier, it made me think about some things, but it didn't actually alter what I believe. I really couldn't wrap my head around the people that would come into the store and tell me all about how Dan Brown was the Antichrist and try to "save" my eternal soul (No, seriously, people used to "witness" to me and other employees personally over the books the corporation chose to carry).

It's just a book. Get over it. For realz, yo.

  • What, if any, is the "reason" behind your wedding date? (Venue availability? Anniversary date? Conspiracy relating to the Mayan calendar?) We wanted a Friday in November.  The first Friday was Nov. 5.  That's also Guy Fawkes Day in England, and since I'm a history geek and H loves "V for Vendetta", it just worked.

If somebody where to ask you for a book recommendation, what's the first book/author that would come to mind? Gone With the Wind.

What's a movie that you had high hopes for, and then felt completely disappointed by after you saw it? Memoirs of a Geisha.

What's something you like to do when have "me time"? Knit and watch Law and Order SVU
